Improving with a Significantly Shortened Backswing

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am around 20 handicap mark at present, haven't played much of late. I feel I have the ability to get lower through putting it more time into game, and no covid restrictions, avern't played in over 3 months, golf has been shut down completely at present. I notice when I take a significantly shortened backswing, like your left hand is almost parallel with the ground on take back to give you the idea, I make pretty consistent and repeatable contact, thus resulting in slightly shorter length, but decent, for my current level of playing..

Wondering if anyone else has any experience of this

Love any thoughts on the subject, thank you in advance

Have you filmed your swing? Good chances are your significantly shorter backswing is longer than you think it is (which isn't a problem, just know that feel isn't real)

One of my main practice drills with my irons is making shorter, compact swings, feeling like I stop where Tony Finau does in the backswing, when I go back and look at it on video, it is often close to what some people have as their full length swings.

If you are making consistent and repeatable contact that is great especially at your handicap level, when you say slightly shorter length, how far are you talking? If you are only hitting your 7 iron 100 yds then that might be a problem depending on what tees you play from, but if a regular 7 iron goes 155 and your shorter compact 7 iron goes 145 then I would be fine with that for now and work on other areas of your game then once you have a solid foundation on those you can come back to irons and work on adding a bit more swing length/speed.

Your swing is probably longer than you realize. Your half swing might be a full swing, and your full swing might be ridiculously long.

Agree with what everyone has said about video because this:

is absolutely me. And I didn't realize this until I started filming.

RE shorter, still hit PW 100m, 3 hybrid 165-170m and driver 190-210m

Re longer swing than I realize,  a mate recorded me, I have done this also myself, my backswing gets to the point just before my left arm begins to bend (doing this for a right hander)..it would be approx 90deg in backswing, close to parallel with the ground (just less than)...  it feels solid and repeatable, even though I'm a mid handicapper for the moment..

I will record myself over next  day or so and upload it

    • 20 year break!  ... Let me guess, you got married? ...  You had kids? ... Or had a career change? ... Maybe did a little time in the pokey? 🤪 Anyway, welcome back to the game and welcome to the forum.
    • Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!! Don't go away. Take a step back for a second. Listen, I know quite a few of the folks on this forum personally and they are all really good people, who love discussing golf. It seems you've become very upset because the title of your thread was changed. Think of it this way, when searching for this thread the rest of us need a way to recognize it. The moderator who changed it just tried to make it easier for the rest of us to find your thread.  Over the years I've had many thread titles changed. I've started other threads which have been merged with similar threads as well. This is a huge form. It's been around for 20 years. The moderators are just trying to keep thing tidy to help us all out.  Give us a chance. I think you'll find this really is a great place for golf talk. I'd suggest "The Numbers Thread", "The would you rather" thread, and the "General COVID-19" thread. Go in there and poke around. There's good stuff in there.  Remember a forum is a collection of personalities just like any forum that gets together in "real life". Some folks are better communicators than others. Some folks are wittier than others. (I'm looking at you @Double Mocha Man. I promise you if you hang around here you'll find stuff that will help your son's game. You'll find stuff that will challenge what you thought about some situations. You'll likely even make some friends. Besides if you go, who's going to teach me new words? I had to look up pedantic.... I had no idea what that meant. I was pretty sure it wasn't positive. But I went to Chicago Public Schools so my vocabulary isn't the strongest.
    • I saw him hit his last home run in Milwaukee in 1976.  I had just graduated high school. A great talent.  RIP.
    • Sticking with the same stuff, left leg slider feel and maintaining the right ankle dorsiflexion. Hitting it well, taken a lot of the left miss out of play, misses recently have been pushes. Went to PING last week to get fit for the new woods, some changes from my last trip which I think is reflective of the swing trending in the right direction. Don't need to tweak the loft lower with the driver anymore and they recommend I hard-step my iron shafts. I like how stable the right foot is on the backswing and how the left foot is rolling to the outstep much less with the face-on.
    • Day 18 - simple chips and pitches in the backyard along with full swings with the 5i and foam balls.  Focused on trail hand grip position.
