Everyone, make sure you add the dates to your calendar!

I'm in between jobs right now, so I have a little post-it on my desk with items I need to add to my calendar once I have my new account.

"7/17 - 7/26 - Golf SV" is right at the top!  ;)

May I please be added to the committed to be considered list?
This trip looks like it could be a great opportunity for me. The location works for me as it's only 2-1/2 to 3 hours from my folks house. If everything goes the way I'm dreaming of it I will be able to go see them (assuming this F-ing COVID thing allows) than cruise up and join in this.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

I was mapping this and it is too far for me, but I was thinking that this (red line) would be a more logical divider between the US and Canada:

  • I would like to keep this to 12 people, if possible. I think we are almost there. I think the best experience for everyone will be to have this be relatively small. I will start to look at a secondary lodging(vrbo/airbnb or something) option to fit everyone too and I think a second cabin would max us out around 6 per cabin with beds at the most.

Originally I was only planning on 8, because it kept the lodging and handling of things much easier. We can go up to 16 if the interest is there, it just makes it more complicated for the arrangements and some may need to unfortunately find lodging for themselves if I am not able to locate a second place of stay for us. I am not overly keen on being the arbiter of who is able to stay at the lake and who isn't. Lastly I will likely need payment for the rounds at Sand Valley a month or so before we play. The fees are non-refundable for Sand Valley, and with 16 people we are talking roughly 14K going on my credit card.  Please plan accordingly for that.

Payments should be made in full to you BEFORE you charge your CC. Especially since it is non-refundable.

I am assuming folks can't call in their payments directly to the course if a group itinerary number were set up. Or is that possible?

Yeah, look, Nate’s doing a great thing for us here, so I’m going to step in here and say that no more than 8 people will stay with him, and he and I will sort that out based on personality types, snoring, and honestly whatever other criteria springs to mind (party people vs. go to bed early people, etc.), and the rest can stay in the inexpensive hotels (at least for the sleeping parts of the evening).

Yeah, we’ll sort that out (Nate with my help) toward mid-spring or so. You can’t book tee times until like 3 months out or something, I think, anyway.

P.S. And when I say 8 max, it might be 6. I don’t think we want Nate bringing extra beds or mattresses or whatever over across the state. It’s a fluid situation.

In all honesty I have no problem staying and paying for my own lodging. I like my sleep and I know that I snore 3 nights out of 4. So, I'm totally fine paying for my own place to stay.

Thanks for that. When I made the tee time last year for just the 4 of us I had to make the payment at the time of making the tee time. I wasn't able to have the other members of our group call in for payment later. I have no issue putting the entire amount on my card, I just want to pay it off quickly.  We should just plan, worse case scenario to all pay for the Sand Valley rounds a month or so ahead of scheduled rounds.

Yep that sounds good, we will get it all handled.  We can all hang out at the lake(It's questionable as you mentioned how much time we will actually have for that), there are some hotel options close to the lake, and some options closer to the courses as well.

The earliest I can make the tee times is one month out. I am going to push that boundary as much as I can to make sure we get good tee times.

I am going to have to bow out as well. The estimates I am getting to repair my pool aren't looking good and I will need every dime I can gather. Replacing all of the concrete is not going to be cheap....sorry guys.

Fill it in and be done with it. Bring some soil from Sand Valley for the last scoop you use to fill in that hole.

Sounds like you’re throwing good money after bad.

    • Use official handicaps. Make everyone who plays sign up for a handicap. Using handicaps based on tournament play is better but it takes a long time for a player to have a reasonable number of scores. Yes, the new handicap system starts at three scores but I think the resulting number has low credibility. Also, it takes a bit of work to calculate the “C” handicap. If you have 40 players, make two flights. Make the split wherever it needs to be to get equal flights.  If there is a large spread in the high and low index in each flight, consider using a percentage of the handicap (90% is recommended). Your Club Champion should be the player with the lowest gross average over the season with a minimum number of events required (5?). You can also award “Net Player of the Year” to the member who wins the most gift certificates.
    • Been on the diet since April 2019. I take it to prevent cluster headaches, which I've suffered from since age 13. The keto diet somehow stops neurological issues like epilepsy and cluster headaches for some reason. They don't really know for sure how. I suspect it has something to do with an inflammation reduction, at least in regards to the cluster headaches. There are also some possible benefits for alcoholism, or alcohol use disorder as it's called now. The Ketogenic Diet May Play a Role in Treating Alcoholism This dietary intervention may help with detox and cravings. The diet's not for everybody though, agreed there. I think a lot of people do great on carbs. I however definitely don't unfortunately. Keto helps me a lot.
    • It is interesting that according to the poll, more members carry a 4 or 5 iron than a 9 iron. I suspect some responders may have misunderstood the question and listed their longest iron rather than all the irons they carry. Or maybe the info is spot on.
    • These sorts of topics bring this into mind. https://twitter.com/iacas/status/1597293924875661312?s=46&t=cZN75QY39GNHB1gTixqANQ   The arms really shouldn’t do much in backswing and assuming the lower body starts the downswing, there shouldn’t be much thought in needing to shallow.  This also assumes good physical stability and mobility. Many people have poor posture and have trouble maintaining posture (most common of which are back issues). The outliers are just that. What is easiest and most efficient?
    • This diet has had gained a lot of steam over the past 5-10 years. This is a long podcast, but it goes over on how nutrition influences on mental health.  ‎Huberman Lab: Dr. Chris Palmer: Diet & Nutrition for Mental Health on Apple Podcasts ‎Show Huberman Lab, Ep Dr. Chris Palmer: Diet & Nutrition for Mental Health - Nov 21, 2022 Basically, Chris Palmer, M.D., a board-certified psychiatrist and assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, goes through why he thinks a ketogenic diet can be  beneficial to people with mental troubles. Some, sever mental issues. Right now, anecdotally, a lot of patients were able to drastically reduce the required of psychiatric drugs for their mental condition. There are currently a number of studies going on in this field of diet influencing mental states. His theory is that mitochondria issues are causing these or amplifying these disorders and ketogenic diet helps restore proper mitochondria function.   He went into a very interesting description of what mitochondria actual do in the body, and it just isn’t ATP production. They can actually activate neural transmitters in the brain. Instead of looking at them in terms of batteries, they are more like a motherboard. Also, the origin of the Atkins diet was a way to control epilepsy. Hardcore fasting, no eating at all, was known to control epilepsy going back to Ancient Greece. I’m modern times, they found that ketosis also helped out. Not saying Ketogenic diet is the best diet. He went onto say that back in the 70’s and 80’s people were eating just as bad as we do now. Yet, obesity was much lower. He believes there is some sort of environmental issue that is causing mitochondria issues, which is causing obesity over just saying it is carbs and sugar. It might be stressors on the body, which can directly influence how our mitochondria function. Lack of sleep alone can jack up mitochondria function. This is why he thinks so many kids are obese now instead of 30-40 years ago. Kids are just much quicker to become obese. So, it might be beneficial to go on a long term ketosis (6-months to 12-months) if you can. Of course, discuss with your doctors first.
