Scratch golfers

I play much better in tournaments also. A lot of it is taking one's time and concentrating like the pros do, and I only do this in tournaments or sometimes after an especially bad shot. How many times do you hit a bad shot in a practice round and then reattempt the same shot concentrating really hard and then hit it perfectly?

Last week on a relatively weak scramble team won a ten team tournament with 5 under on 9 holes (after work). Won $40 on a $6 entry fee.

I am going to try to play at least once a week,but I do have 2 kids in baseball that takes up a lot of time but still I think I can get in a round a week that should be enough to keep the rust off I would hope

In my mind, I'm really a scratch golfer, or at least "this close" to scratch. Then I look at my damn handicap card or the printout at my club and I'm always a 5 or a 6.

I'd guess I would need 20 more yards and a hot putter for an entire year to get there.

Hi,

Being a scratch golfer is a great achievement and one that not many obtain. I have been playing at a scratch level for a while now, but you have to be dedicated and patient. There are some players at my local club who are scratch or there abouts and they are still very young, some as young as 14-15.

Three years ago my handicap reached a low of 0.6. Unfortunately I didn't have the time (or determination) I would have liked to keep improving or at least maintain it.

I'm in the process of a job change which will allow me to have shifts at night. This means every single day I will be on the range and the occasional round. It will be great because the woman works the same time shift at her job - so I will never feel like I'm leaving her behind.

If I can continue the determination and focus, I will be scratch by start of 2009.

Are talking about gross score or net score. I know I have definate troubles beating a 14 in a net competition, thats just too many pops. If I lost to a 14 handicap in a gross competition, well he is a sandbagger.

A 14 handicap score should average around 88-90, with his best scores being in the low 80's. I cannot speak for all scratch players, but I myself, out of 70+ rounds, have 11 in the 80's and a high score of 86 for the year and that was on a really hard course. You couldn't beat me on a bet and that should be the same for any scratch golfer. You must have known some vanity handicappers.

I have to agree with nm on this one playing heads up you should never be able to beat a scratch golfer if you have a handicap of 5 or above,right.If so the scratch golfer just had himself a bad day

most of us have our index listed... as you post and read more threads you'll get a feel for what people claim to be.

Most people on here don't seem to know the difference between an index and a course handicap. My index has been a whole number like 5 times but if you look at the profiles you'll notice a lot of whole numbers.

the key term to what i said was "self proclaimed scatch golfer". Most of those who I have played were not even close. Im sure you've seen or heard that before. "Oh, me? Im about a scratch..." and they're not. at least they dont play like it.

I have beat some legit scratch golfers before. I tend to play up to my competition....unfortunately I tend to play DOWN to my competition sometimes too. I never could quite understand why...LOL

Yea I do know what you mean steel driver its hard to get anyone to tell the truth off the course and its funny to see them try to backpaddle when you get to the course........This why I have not put a handicap on here yet I do not have one but feel like I am playing pretty good so far it should be less than 5

Yeah, I work with a guy who proclaimed that "everyone is his family are scratch golfers as they all have around 10 handicaps". Let's just say I don't think he knew the definition of scratch golfer.

I have been between an 8-12 over the past 5 years and I cannot seem to go lower. As others have said, you have to put the time into it and that is one thing I just don't have. Two kids, 3 & 1 and a demanding job. Gets tough!
