SGI vs. Utility Irons

With the lofts of newer SGI irons being much stronger (as low as 20° for a 5-iron), I am wondering whether these are indeed easier to play than utility irons with the same lofts.

E.g. would a Titleist T400 #5 be easier or harder to play / more forgiving than U510 #3 with the same loft? Or a Taylormade Sim Max OS #4 or #5 compared to a Sim UDI #2 or #3 with the same loft?

I have the exact same thought after I tested a Mavrik 7 iron (27*) and hit it 22-25 yds longer carry compared to my JPX 919 Tour 7 iron (36*). After I started to think if I should get the 4 iron (18*) in Mavrik as my driving iron. Because those things was so easy to launch and swing with no effort.

I would think driving irons, being designed generally for better players, would have less offset than SGI long irons. I know Rickie Fowler has played SGI long irons instead of driving irons in the past. 

You probably won’t know for certain how the clubs compare without trying them out for yourself.

I have a Srixon ZU85 3 20* Utility iron with a Recoil 95 F5 shaft and a PXG 0311X Gen2 2 Utility Iron with a Evenflow Project X 6.0-S 85gram hybrid shaft.

They are stunning!  I would not trade this in for any hybrid.  I do not hook them like a I can with a hybrid.  

I would recommend to anyone that is thinking about replacing any of their upper irons or even hybrids to give a serious look at Utility Irons.  

From heavy rough I will hit the Srixon over the PXG as the bottom gets thru easier for me.  

As far as using a Utility Iron vs an SGI, I lean towards the two brands I have.  I feel they are easier to hit then SGI irons in comparable lofts.  But you should try them yourself on a launch monitor to see for yourself.

Golf advice is great but hey the best advice you can get is hitting the clubs on a launch monitor yourself.

A lot more goes into the club than just the loft. 

Yes, they are extremely easy to hit.

Is your 919 bent that way? Because stock loft I’m pretty sure is 34°.
 

Anyway that’s a really good question. I would think maybe the SGI iron, with it being a little bit shorter than some utility irons. Might be a little bit tighter dispersion. As a driving iron, the SGI’s tend to work pretty well. However, on long approaches the utility irons do tend to do a bit better.

Yes I have 2* weaker loft on my irons. Because I love traditional lofts and I hit it equal distance with 36*, but with more spin.
