Three things:

  1. Of course non slope. Slope is against the Rules.
  2. Kessler should use a version that doesn’t even have a slope switch.
  3. Remember they also magnify 6x or 7x. You can watch someone else from farther away, watch putts from the fairway, etc.

Is it currently legal to use, e.g, binoculars, to watch the players ahead of you?

But then again, what the hell do I know?

I don't know the answer but I'm guessing no simply because we haven't seen Bryson try this yet. 😉

They use them in practice rounds, and I guarantee they have an extra battery.

I even have an extra battery!  Somewhere amidst the junk in my bag!

Tom Kite used to. Or maybe those were his glasses.

And those batteries last a heck of a long time.  Also so light weight I doubt the Caddie would even notice if there were 3 spares in the bag.  It is not an issue.

Just some different takes on the subject. Maybe I don't know the exact details of a caddie's job.

Binoculars are allowed.

The point in this article I need to listen to is that they only aim for the pin 5% of the time.

To get a reading you aim for the pin, and then add or subtract yardage depending on the spin package you're applying and the firmness of the green.  Unless I'm looking almost straight down at the green I'm unable to get readings for different areas on the green... at least accurate ones.

I understand aiming the DMD at the pin and accounting for roll/spin.  I took the article to mean they are not aiming their shot directly at the pin.  All too often I try aiming for the pin and, since I am not at the level of a tour pro, I am often off line.  It would be better for me to aim at the center of the green to give maximum allowance for dispersion and still be on the putting surface.  That is what I was alluding to.

Got it.  My misunderstanding.  The pros/caddies take into account the putting break of the green when they make an approach shot, among other things, and they don't want to short-side themselves.

My standing quip, when I miss a hole out on my approach is: "Arrgh, I mis-read the break!"  (So I say that alot)

Do you have a copy of LSW? I only ask because… I don't see the badge, and because you just said all that stuff. 🙂

A statement from the PGA Tour:

“The PGA Tour conducted a four-tournament test of Distance Measuring Devices on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2017, with varying results,” the Tour said in a statement released Tuesday. “We decided at the time to continue to prohibit their use in official competitions on the PGA Tour, PGA Tour Champions and Korn Ferry Tour for the foreseeable future. We will evaluate the impact rangefinders have on the competition at the PGA of America's championships in 2021 and will then review the matter with our player directors and the Player Advisory Council.”

Erik,

I know this is OT but I am getting a message that "@iacas cannot receive messages" when I try to PM you.  Here is a screenshot of the error message.

I think it’s because you’re putting the @ symbol in.

    • I would recommend spending some time at the range and film your swing. You can post it in the Member Swings thread. At the range, you can figure out how to control the driver a bit more. We can offer some pointers once you post in the Member Swings section.
    • With the H4 or the watch, you tag the club before hitting by putting the tag next to the device. The tag is on the club butt end. After a round, you don’t really think about it too much. You just do it. I don’t know how far you are from @phillyk, but he may know an instructor in your area.
    • So the biggest issue right now is marrying the hands down with an athletic turn. I can get stuck not turning. Things get interesting from there.

    • Hi everybody!  I am new to the golf game. I have taken some lessons and got fitted for clubs a couple of months ago. I usually score between 110-120 for 18 holes.  I bought a Stealth driver last year and have been hitting consistently with it 210-230 yds on the simulator. But when I take it out on the course, every drive is a severe slice!  I played 18 holes yesterday at the club where I belong. I removed the driver from my bag and used the 5 iron to drive with. I hit straight 16 out of 18 drives, 180 - 200 yds. I used the 5i - putter for the rest of my game.  I ended the day with a 92. Question: Does it make sense for me to continue playing with irons only until I get further along in my game before I reintroduce the Driver and woods again? Or should I continue to struggle with the Driver and woods and shoot in the 100’s again? To me it’s a no brainer, but for those more advanced I am interested to get feedback.
