New Irons and Lie Angle Question

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Ive went and bought a set of Mizuno JPX 921 Forged irons from eBay, prob is l never read the description fully, they are 2 degrees flat.

Im 6ft, 36" wrist to floor and using Ping's guide that would make me 2 degrees up(green).

My current irons are Titleist AP1 718 and the are more upright from std than the mizunos....

So l know l can have them bent, but do you think going from 2 flat to 2 up will be ok for the clubs...?

Thanks

Brendan

They should be ok to bend. Bring them to a good builder or shop to do it.

They are forged, so that helps. They most like were bent from standard to begin with.

Its my own stupid fault, the seller clearly said it in the description, l just did not read it properly...

If you’re only going by a static fitting you may not need any adjustment at all. I’m 6’2,  35” WTF and play +1” and 1* flat.

I just bent a Mizuno iron to failure a day ago for a new video coming out Friday. Won't spoil it, but will tell you I got more than 4 degrees out of it without issue. Also, before you go bending anything, go ahead and check the lie angles yourself so you aren't just guessing at what you need.

Thanks for the video Adam - really neat to see.

Can I ask TST hive mind a few honest, but basic, naïve, and ignorant questions...

When it comes to lie angle, how much does how you set-up to the ball change things?  For a given club, wouldn't the lie angles change as you get closer to your body or farther from the body?   (And those changes might change how tall/bent you stand at address too?)

When a skilled golfer grabs someone else's clubs and hits them well, the lie angle might be off, but are they intuitively (or explicitly) able to adjust via the set up?

How much should we adjust our set-up to our clubs? How much should we adjust our clubs to our set up?

(Apologies if these Qs have been addressed elsewhere! I'm curious because I suspect that some of my inconsistency comes from an inconsistent set up. ...and I've never done an iron fitting / looked at lie angle before, but I have played around with setting up closer to / farther from the ball.)

Lie can be affected by set up, but it is really impact position that is key. The shaft is actually bending down slightly at impact. So the head is slightly flattened with respect to the shaft. If you set up too close or too far from the ball, it can vary the head position at impact.

One trick I use at set up is to let my right arm hang free. If I can then move it to the club without moving it in or away from my body, then my set up is in the right spot.

Tried your tip out today, and it appears that my normal setup follows your guidance.  That was comforting.  ...my scoring, on the other hand...

Just keep it in mind on the course. There are times where my setup goes astray.

    • This is how the selections have been picked for The Masters winner. I do see a slight problem in that two people picked JS at -14 . From what @iacas mentioned, if I am not mistaken, there can only be one selection for a particular golfer with reference to their final score? I noticed Darkfrog selected JS first at -14. Check out all the selections below:   Colins69                Tony Finau -11 phillyk                    Patrick Canlay -11 ncates00               Patrick Cantlay -13 nevets88               Rory McIlroy -12 pganapathy            Rory McIlroy -17 Darkfrog               Jordan Spieth -14 onthehunt526       Jordan Spieth -14 woodzie264          Dustin Johnson -14 RickK                     Dustin Johnson -17 iSank                      Dustin Johnson -18 DewSweeper09    Justin Thomas -9 Birdieputt              Justin Thomas -13 Billy Z                    Justin Thomas -14 Zippo                     Bryson DeChambeau -11 Hardspoon            Bryson DeChambeau -15 False hopes          Lee Westwood -11 Yukari                    Collin Morikawa -14 Bucki1968             Paul Casey -10
    • Ahh okay. Interesting you're feeling that already. I definitely don't want to cause a wrist injury here by suggesting you feel it more lol. It's not like egregiously bad at all obviously. It's not quite Lee Westwood, but you're not like super super far off from that.  Anyway, obviously disregard whatever I say if the instructor disagrees.
    • I do palmar flexion at the top, but it is worth a look, thanks. I’ll ask my instructor.
    • Collin Morikawa putting is atrocious. He has missed 4 putts within 4 feet just in the front 9 of the third round. He also missed 2 putts within 6 to 7 feet.
    • Hi Erik - I posted a swing on my old My Swing site, but I noticed that it got buried into the old content. Is there a way delete or archive the old content. Not sure if others will be able to find the new swing I posted. Thanks.
