FlightScope's Trajectory Optimizer is a golf ball flight trajectory program. The program will plot the flight of the ball in real time after the user's input of the initial launch conditions of the golf ball. Based on scientific...

Wow! Take a look at the upgrades!

  • iacas changed the title to FlightScope Trajectory Optimizer - Heavily Upgraded!

I was on there last week and saw the upgrades. Is there a way to see the 3D and data at the same time? I believe that is the one thing you could do before that is no longer available.

Yeah I saw that too, but the ability to export to CSV makes up for it… a bit. 😄

I was like a little kid watching the ball fly as the data populated. Kudos for local weather and wind influences!

So I've messed around with this a lot in the past but one thing I just noticed is optimal driver launch angle. According to online sources (trackman PGA tour averages, PGAtour.com stats) the average PGA tour drive is launched at under 11 degrees, with a downward angle of attack, spins around 2700 and only carries 270 yards. The highest on tour is David Hearn who is the only player over 14 degrees and the lowest guys are actually under 8! degrees.

Other online sources as well as the optimizer has the optimal launch angle at 17 degrees and the lower the spin the better, 2700 seemed high to me. Just moving that launch angle to 17 and dropping the spin down to 2200, which seems consistently attainable for a tour pro, the carry went up 11 yards. So question is are they really gaining that much more control hitting it lower and spinnier to warrant having an extra club into every hole?

Bill Haas could hit it 25 yards farther, but hates seeing the ball get really high up in the air. He feels like he has very little control over it when it gets up there.

That would certainly explain a lot of players but with the distance hunt we've seen in the past couple years to not see anyone anywhere near what is scientifically the ideal launch angle just doesn't add up to me.

You'd also have to possibly change your swing too much, and at higher speeds with lower spin, it becomes very easy to tilt the spin axis.
