Help Finding a New Set of Clubs

Recommended Posts

So apparently the PXG 0211 is a great beginners set.  Some are comparing this with the Sub 70.  Anyone try the Sub 70? Because from what I read, the PXG is one of the best irons around.  Great for distance/height, speed and keeping the ball straight.

Not sure what you mean by ‘beginners set.’ Callaway Strata, Topflite, irons in a box set, etc. are beginners clubs. The 0211’s are fantastic irons for just about anyone. They’re not blades but they’re certainly beyond a beginners set.

Maltby does not have data on the 0211 yet. Here is what the previous models rate:

Except for the first model that included a "T", which I assume stood for tour, the clubs seem to be game or super game improvement. With the price reduction in the 0211, I would assume that they are similar in playability.

It may be better in a whole other topic, but do people still actually care about MPF?

I feel like it's off more than it's "on."

The MOI and vertical CoG are interesting data points, but the MPF seems arbitrary at best.

Yeah-when someone references Maltby for the basis of their choice or decision I can’t help but disregard.

The 0311 Gen 3s are also an option. Right now I’m considering the PXG 0211 2021 and the PXG 0311 XP Gen 3s.

not sure if I should go with graphite shaft and if I should change the length of the stick from the standard 37”

I don't think this is off topic. It may deserve its own place for discussion. However, since the OP is asking for help selecting irons and since the MPF is sometimes (although rarely now-a-days) referenced to help players make a selection. I think it is relevant here.

I've never been a fan of the MPF. One thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't just categorize clubs, it also seems to lump players into categories. It doesn't take into account a players individual needs/skills/weaknesses. The MPF takes none of those differences into account. Of course, it also ignores that some may like traditional lofts and some may want/need/prefer much more aggressive lofts.

In addition, the categories it uses are different from what everyone else uses. Which is weird. The industry has category names, why not use them?

But most of all what I don't like about it is that it makes claims like "more consistency" for Super Game Improvement Irons. ... Huh? Does that even make sense?

I just got the 0211 DC 2021. They’re beautiful. I got the Mitsubishi MMT 80g shafts. Second set with these shafts and I’m really happy with them. My Callaway X Forged irons have the Nippon 950GH NEO shaft and that’s probably my favorite steel shaft.

So u didn’t change the shaft from PXG website when u placed the order. You did it later else where?

I ordered the irons with the Mitsubishi shafts from PXG. I had the earlier 0211…needed them bent and no one would do it so I sold them and ordered new 0211 with Mitsubishi shafts.

I only see Nippon and KBS when I check the shaft options.  I don't see Mitsubishi shafts.

I think it is a quick way to understand who a club may be geared for. There are a lot of manufacturers and models. I would be interested in hearing more about people's experiences with MPF and if there is a better way to discern how forgiving a certain design may be.

If the OP was a 20 HI I would think that the other PXG choices would be better that the 0311T.

I would definitely look at MPF to rule out or pare down a decision. Many people don't know what it is and I think it has some value. Maybe it is the mechanical engineer in me.

    • I recall after my session (last one of the day) you asking to hit a few drivers and the guy gave some lame (to me) excuse for not letting you do that.  Oh well.  And I've always found you to be completely truthful and forthcoming in fittings and in giving tips.
    • @Double Mocha Man didn’t say it but I was there helping the fitters. Not in the actual fitting of people but as the pro and “to make the sale.” I was helping a couple people. Some ladies were swinging way too hard and couldn’t make contact to give good readings on trackman. I saw @Double Mocha Manman hit the driver and sure he hit them well but definitely not 40yds better. The fitter also said several things on flight data that was clear he was milking it a bit. I didn’t know they said it was 40yds. I would’ve believed 5-10yds at most. Also we only use flight limited balls at this range so a couple data points were not accurate.  I’m always as honest as I can be. I’ll “make the sale” if I think it’s a good idea or if the person really wants it. I won’t lie about ball flight data or what a club can do. So that environment was hard for me.  It was also weird. I used their driver a couple times towards the end because I hadn’t hit it before. The moment I asked to test it on their trackman, both their monitors both died… maybe they wanted to just pack up and go but it still took them over an hour to leave. Makes me wonder what truly was going on.
    • Day 209, May 28, 2022 Hit balls for 10 or 12 minutes waiting for a lesson to arrive. Shorter, wider, still just as far.
    • Good one.  Thanks.  But the problem is the guy kept pushing his drivers when (if he looked) he could see I was hitting my own driver just as far or farther.  When I went into the session I told him I was looking for more distance and at least the same accuracy.
    • It's entirely plausible that the fitter is unscrupulous, but it seems more likely to me that there was a misread on one of your baseline shots. The good news is, it sounds like you have a setup that works well for you. Maybe try yelling "boom!" When you hit your current driver to make up some of the yardage.
