I say BS. I think its funny that people think Augusta can determine if Phil or Tiger (that caliber) plays. If Tiger walked in and said to Billy Payne, "hey F you, try and stop me from playing this tournament." There is no way, no matter how much they control their own tournament, that Tiger Woods or even Phil would be told to stay home. Sure they can ban reporters and half ass players but not players that run the tour. There would be so much corporate pressure and general public outroar that they couldnt do it. Would either one of them do it, i dont think so. But augusta needs tiger and phil more than tiger or phil needs augusta at this time.

To say that Phil is a gambler is tantamount to saying that Tiger is an alcoholic. It just can't be true.

Don't be fooled, Phil is definitely a gambler (and, in his day, quite a big gambler at that). It is no secret that he placed a pretty big futures bet on the Ravens to win the SuperBowl the year they won (he is a huge NFL fan). I also understand he has lost six figures (or more) in Vegas casinos.

However, I do believe that is mostly in his past, as his wife basically lowered the boom on him -- basically telling him that he was setting a terrible example for his children and that he needed to stop.

The story is likely a hoax, but Phil is a well known gambler, both on the course and off. He did win a huge bet on the SuperBowl and the number that was circulated about his Vegas losses was closer to 7 figures. There was also talk that Amy likes to bet as well so the fact that she dropped the hammer might not be the case.

It was widely believed that one of the reasons he switched to Callaway so abruptly was that Ely paid off his tab for him but required that he switch immediately. It had to be clubs and ball now or no deal. The switch took place right before the Ryder Cup at Oakland Hills in 04 and got Callaway a ton of free publicity.

I wonder if he placed a bet on that putt from off the green he made on the first hole in Augusta?

Ely Callaway died in July 2001. Phil switched, as you say, in 2004.

I was wrong about it being Ely who paid off his debts but the story still goes that Callaway picked up his tab.

Phil has always come off as a spoiled brat. I can easily see him losing a bet and not wanting to pay up.

How is Phil betting on himself, in a tournament ay different Than Pete Rose betting on his own team, as a manager, not a player!!  Maybe the gambling rules are different, but it is still a :pound: questionable practice.

You've won the "Thread Bump of the Week Award!"

(The last post in this thread prior to yours was from over six years ago.)

BTW, I think the difference is by betting on yourself to win, that's cool. Pete Rose supposedly never bet on his team, and had he, betting on his team to win would not be bad, either. It may violate an MLB rule, but I don't think many people would care that he bet on his team to WIN.

Betting on yourself or your team to LOSE is another matter altogether, because as a manager (or a player in an individual sport), you can pretty much guarantee that you'll win those bets, and that's dirty, scum-level stuff there.

BTW, it's always interesting to see what threads bring people into the site and out of lurking. Check out http://thesandtrap.com/ and http://thesandtrap.com/f/ and you'll surely find a LOT of other interesting threads. If you're into Phil Mickelson possibly doing bad things, check out .
