I mean I can't go back in time and recreate said event so I have no proof. That being said the guy who told me I have known for 5+years and he was an employee of the course and the story was confirmed by more than one employee there. I don't see how it benefits anyone to badmouth any pro if you work in the golf business. Not sure what the point in making up a story like that would be but hey I you like Mike Weir I can see why, he has contributed to charity events and helped grow golf in Canada.

As for Stephen Ames, I can tell you golfers/athletes don't like people in the media so that's no surprise to me, when you read some of the articles published you can see why he may not be friendly to them. My experience was that when I met him before his round at a clinic/9hole event and after chatting we realized we share a mutual friend. Long story short he was cracking jokes and talking to me and my friends during the 9 holes in between shots.

I also know Stephen goes out of his way to help golfers from Trinidad and Tobego, Canada, his former college where he played golf and its alumni, and various other charity organizations.

He took a lot of crap for his comments about Tiger Woods when he apparently called him out but really was just complimenting the guy, when he got thrashed like 8&7 or something crazy he was still a pro about it

Not to speak for Sean, but what makes me skeptical is the entirety of the story related to Weir was that "he demanded the course be cleared for his round."  That isn't really a story, just a statement.  And depending on somebody's preconceived views of Weir, they can take it different ways.  If I don't like him, then I am going to picture him in a robe and crown, with a giant staff, riding to the course in a litter, proclamating that the course be free of all human life, and also making sure nobody makes eye contact with him.

If he seems like a good guy to me, then I'm inclined to translate the statement as benignly as "he inquired as to when the course was the least busiest such that he could play his practice round in peace."

Point being that many people (myself included) are always going to be skeptical of second hand anecdotes like that.

To be "Member of the Year" you have to get the most "reputation" points (basically people "liking" your posts) so I would say that you have a lot of catching up to do seeing as how its September already.  But good luck!  (I'll 'like' your last post to get you going)

You captured my point perfectly. I don't have anything against Ames and I don't know Weir any better than that poster knows "Lanny Watkins", but I wanted to point out the possibility of the story sounding like an exaggeration for effect.

Absolute lie. BS.

There is not a professional golfer on the planet who would do that.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

FYI, tecnicaskates ... I believe this gentleman ^^^ is the frontrunner for "Member of the Year 2012."  At least 2 consecutive months this year as Member of the Month has to put him up near the top.  Unless, of course, Erik resets the standings Fedex Cup style at Christmas and then its just a free-for-all for one week.  In that case, I could have a chance!

Also, while I tend to shy away from Shorty-like hyperbole and absolutes ... I would tend to agree with him on this one.  The story, as told, sounds quite unlikely.

About 25 years ago Robert Allenby was still an amateur and played in an amateur strokeplay tournament in my club in Ireland, playing with a mate of mine in the second last pairing in the final round.  My friend told me afterwards that Allenby never once spoke to him the whole way round, and didn't so much as acknowledge his existence.  He described him fairly succintly as a "dickhead".

A player at the opposite end of the spectrum was Paul McGinley.  I caddied for him in one round in the same tournament, and he was one of the nicest guys you could meet.  What really impressed me was that on one occasion he knocked his approach into trees next to the green, and in addressing the ball he cracked a twig on a fallen tree.  He was well out of sight of everyone, with no more than a couple of people following his round, but he insisted on bringing it to the attention of the referee, and getting a ruling on whether he had incurred a penalty.  As it happened he hadn't, and went on to win the tournament, but I was really blown away by his temperament and integrity.  I really hope he gets the Ryder Cup captaincy in two years time as expected.

What If I told you four years ago that Tiger was banging porn stars and diner waitresses.

Not sure what I stand to gain from making an anonymous post on a website so that I can make up a story out of thin air about someone I have never met.

Thanks for the tips on member of the year, but I was being sarcastic

I didn't suggest that you were making anything up.  All you said was that your friend told you that Mike Weir "demanded" the course be cleared.  I believe every word of your story.

What I am skeptical of is the vagueness of your friends use of the word "demanded."  What exactly did he mean?  (I am being a lawyer here and objecting on the grounds of hearsay)  Like I stated previously, it could have meant a lot of things, and unless you get the entire story from him or have him come on here and elaborate, I am not going to jump to the conclusion that Mike Weir is a jerk.

Nor should anybody else.

Bubba today...what was that all about? Air mailes a green and hits a spectator, gets a members bounce off of the guy, gets to the green, signs a glove and then hands it to his caddy to give to the guy? I'm confused...was ths the act of a nice guy or of a bloke too aloof and up himself to have apologise in person...oh well....

My opinion is that Freddie C. is just misunderstood because he has a bit of social anxiety disorder.....not all these guys are perfect...everyone that I have heard or talked to that is a friend of Fred says he is one of the all-time great guys......he just happens to be uncomfortable with a mass of fans....

I've gone to a lot of tournaments and see fans pestering these guys for gloves, autographs, etc etc. Some fans don't even know the names of players or remember that they've gotten the autograph earlier in the day of the same player (seen this happen).  It must get old after years and years of dealing with this - you can imagine what these players go through away from the course as well -

I ran into Bubba Watson at a Dicks' Sporting Goods (looking at shoes) with his wife Angie.  Tempted to talk to him about the tournament he was in (just missed the cut) The Players.  Held back and gave him his space. But you know that he's always fielding questions and having people interrupt what he's doing.

Can't blame the players from getting jaded or cold when people invade their personal space, especially away from the course.

  • 4 weeks later...

I watched Ray Floyd tee off on what I thought was a par 5. I did not look at the tee marker but the hole sure looked long. After he hit his tee shot I walked right with him and said You should be able to get home in two with that blast. He looked at me like he wanted to punch me in the nose. I was with a friend and asked my friend what the heck is Floyd's problem. All I did was say he should be able to get home in two being he had bombed one. My friend said you dang dummy, this hole is a par four. LOL I said lets gets out of here and we left that jerk. The tournament was at Greystone in Birmingham about 6 or 8 years ago. I never liked him since even though my comment may had sounded like a wise crack but I did not mean it to be. I guess I should have looked to see what hole it was before he hit it. I could not stand it after that and made a point to catch up with him again that day. He was on a par three and I say I am quite sure you can get there today.lol. I had to get my last word in. I stood about 12 foot from Hale Irvin that same day and commented on his good shot.. He never looked back and just kept walking. He is also a jerk. Most of these pro's think they are better than the rest of us , that's for sure. I would have hated to be paired with Lee Trevino. He never shuts up . I am glad he give the game up. Not to take anything away for his golfing skill but I think he is also a jerk

    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    • Ah ok I misunderstood. But you did bring to light an oversight on my part.
    • I was agreeing with you/jumping off from there.
