And if he wins (gasp) the British Open, the hat will be an homage to Mr. Morris. Equal opportunity opportunist. Heh.

Still not happy with Bryson's lies. For example, just yesterday:

  • The hat was because of Payne. Years ago he was on record as saying it's because of Ben Hogan.
  • The wall at SMU for Payne Stewart that he says made him decide to go there… didn't exist until after he'd begun taking classes at SMU.

Both lies feel awfully "convenient" because he won at Pinehurst.

Now, this is a reason to not be so fond of him. Pretty shady here @saevel25🙂

Conjecture.  This sounds like you’re just making up the excuse to not like him even more.

Huh? You’re not understanding my point. I’ve already stated I like him more due to his media/fan interaction at PGAT events. BD has stated ‘ I like what LIV is doing to grow the game.’ He believes in LIV and said it’s not about the money so thinking he’d like to see more interest in LIV is hardly conjecture.

SMU Athletics Mural - Unveiling Event At Texadelphia

Looks like the mural was unveiled in 2006.

I don't know if that's the same thing. That's a mural at a cheesesteak store, I think.

Anyway…

Come one now. Some guy on twitter says it so it must be true?

Thats the SMU announcement from 2009. Was named way before Bryson started.

Construction apparently did not finish until 2017 so at least the guy on twitter got that right.

That quote is apparently from this 2022 article

In his recent YouTube video, Bryson DeChambeau discusses how his love for the famous Ben Hogan cap began and his admiration for the legend.

He has talked about the cap way before this. In a 2015 interview he talks about both Payne Stewart and Ben Hogan as the inspiration,

I tweeted the URL to the SMU article from 2009 in response. I doubt he'll acknowledge it, but thanks.

Hold the phones…

They may have broke ground in 2009, but it didn't ever open or go much beyond that. The Payne Stewart facility at Trinity Forest opened in 2017.

I couldnt find anything saying the first one was canceled so I assumed it was the same project. Admittedly the info on the specifics is limited.

Either way, the original point of the earlier tweet by the guy was that no Payne Stewart named center was announced when Bryson started at SMU. Thats factually false.

The fact that it ended up somewhere else is somewhat irrelevant imo. The two locations are only 10 miles apart as far as I can tell?

It's not false if all they did was break ground but not build the thing until 2017.

Again, the first "location" wasn't really a location if it was some dirt with a few ceremonial shovel scoops taken out of it.

I don't think it was ever actually built.

The second article doesn't even mention the first "location."

This discussion and Bryson’s media figure reminds me of a trend you see all over the place in social media and Internet in general: staging. I don’t use Instagram a whole lot, but enough to come across videos that are obviously staged, but presented as happening randomly. It falls in like with the “fake news” part of the world where you can’t trust anything.

People (influencers, celebrities, politicians etc.) throws stuff out all the time that are straight up lies, pretending ignorance, or twisted to make it sound more interesting than it actually is.

Then there’s the overreactions. Youtube and Instagram are filled with thumbnails of shocked content creators “LOOK WHAT HAPPENED 🫣😲🫣”, then it’s some staged or stupid shit.

I miss the time when most of what you found online was not staged or stupid.

The sad part is that it works, generate clicks, ad revenue and people make millions on that stuff. At least Bryson is primarily a professional golfer.

Bryson raking the 18th bunker while holding the trophy puts more of his face in the media. There’s no reason to do it, but it makes for some good photos and he’s building his persona. From the entire week you can see how he interacts with the audience way more than most of them out there. Part of it is probably just being Bryson and giving the audience something extra, but I always have the thought in the back of the head that it’s not the entire reason.

Players being emotional, engaging and showing more of themselves than hitting a golf ball is good, but at some point you cross the line into being fake for the sake of attention.

Amazing US Open to watch. Of course I was rooting for Bryson, but a little part of me wanted a W for Rory. Hope this fuel Rory to win a major soon.
Interesting to see how much is going to take for Aberg to win his first major.
Scheffler is human, thank god.. we need more tight final rounds like this.

May I just say that these are insightful and extremely pertinent observations. I think it is fair to be skeptical of almost anything involving a celebrity. Or that is posted on YouTube - for example, many of the “heart-warming” animal rescue videos are obviously staged. We are supposed to believe that people just happened to be ready to shoot professional quality video when they spotted that puppy? Ridiculous.

And AI is only going to make all of this much, much worse.

A lot of the post-Open praise for Bryson seems to be along the lines of, not so much what a great guy he is, but what a savvy user of media tools and what an efficient self-brander he has become. I suppose this makes sense because a lot of people have goals in that direction and might look at him as a model.

    • I voted "Decent Weather Golfer". I was going to describe my general rules...but then @saevel25 did it for me so I'll just copy his, with one addition: Temp: Above 45 degrees (pending wind at the low end).  Below 90 degrees. Weather: On and off rain, I am ok. I may not go out by myself, but I am not skipping a tee time if the weather is just meh. T-storms, or torrential downpour, then it will be a game time decision. Snow is out. I will never play golf when it is that cold out.
    • Ok, I didn't read the question at all, lol. So, to answer this thread correctly.  Temp: Above 45 degrees (pending wind at the low end). Weather: On and off rain, I am ok. I may not go out by myself, but I am not skipping a tee time if the weather is just meh. T-storms, or torrential downpour, then it will be a game time decision. Snow is out. I will never play golf when it is that cold out.  The closest one might be "All Weather" then ;).
    • All weather, but very rarely if it’s pouring. Some rain is fine. Wind is a more no-go than rain. Especially wind and rain. I’d rather play in cool light drizzle than 80° F+ and sunny. My body is not designed for hot weather. My perfect conditions are 60-70° F and cloud cover. If it’s a bit nippy I can wear more clothes. I can only remove so much clothes if it’s 75+ and still get too hot. Warm and cloudy can work too.
    • Yeah it was a dicks Black Friday deal. But you had to buy the 96. Pack
    • Wow ~$0.80 a ball? That's a great deal!
