I play both the current TP Blacks and Reds (with LDP). The black does lauch a little higher off the driver. The spin from short irons isn't that different between models to me. As i've been switching between a 9* and 10.5* driver, i've found the blacks launch almost too high for me off the 10.5*, but are perfect off the 9*. The reds are perfect off the 10.5*, but are a little too low for me off the 9*. I decide on the model based on wind and how muddy the fairways are (i.e. where i want as much carry as possible).

I don't think there's a direct comparison with ProV1's, as i don't think they spin nearly as much...both are probably more comparable in that regard to a V1x. that's a good thing for me though, as I can't accidentally suck them back 20 feet off of a wedge which happens to me using ProV1's. Off of a full PW the TP's hop once and check or spin back only a foot or two.

Good balls, i'm sold; great prices! (i've been playing used balls from Lostgolfballs.com -- occasionally had deals for 100-ball buckets of the TP's AAA quality for $45; 90% of them are completely playable & look fine).

Driver: Cleveland Classic 270, 10.5*
Fairway Woods: Adams Speedline LP (3 & 5)
Hybrids: Wilson Staff Fybrids 21*, 24*, UST V2 stiff
Irons: Callaway X-20 Tour, 5-PW, Rifle Project-X (flighted) 6.0
Wedges: Cleveland CG15 DSG 52* & 58* +/- 56* Niblick

Putter: Yes! Amy

Yup, this sounds right. Pretty nice to have two options like that. I tried experimenting with doing something like that, but ultimately it negatively affected me around the greens since that is the glaring difference between the two balls is 50 yards and in. The Penta TP is it for me though. It's like a hybrid of everything I liked about the TP Red & TP Black, while reducing or eliminating the things I didn't like about both balls. It's a beautiful thing, but on the other hand... so is 100 premium balls for $45.

You all know that this discussion about TP Red/Black is irrelevant don't you? Both balls are no longer in production because the the Penta TP has superseded them. As current supplies run out they will no longer be available, so it's probably time to start looking for something else. The only premium ball that TaylorMade makes now is the Penta.

You can still purchase TP Red/Black at most golf stores. So until you can't find the ball anywhere, and/or don't have any left that you can play, this particular conversation is still relevant.

These guys have at least 1-2 full seasons that they could likely still find and play this ball. There's no reason for them to rush into playing a newer, more expensive ball if they don't want to.

I never said they have to play a more expensive, ball. Most of the people I talk to think that the Penta is just an additional ball in the TM line. I was simply trying to alleviate any misunderstanings. And the Red and Black certainly won't survive in any great numbers past this year. Not according to our TM rep anyway.

By the way: The Penta has outsold TM's expectations... the ball is backordered here in Colorado. Our rep can't even get any.

Just picked up a dozen TP Black LDP (2009) yesterday. They were the same price as the E5 - a budget ball which I have been meaning to try. I'm coming from the Pro V1x and I am anxious to see how these TP Blacks perform. I always felt that I was on the cusp, SS wise, of seeing any benefit from the V1x, but I also thought the regular ProV1 spun too much for my preferred type of wedge play. I putted inside yesterday with a TP Black and it felt much softer on my putter than I had anticipated. I liked it.

The Blacks and Reds are great balls. most stores sell 2 dozen for the price of one middle of the road ball. i never hit the penta, but i chalk it up as the same purpose TM comes out with 2 new drivers a year. Marketing their way into our pockets.

whats next? an 8 piece ball caled the "octo", or maybe a 10 piece ball called the "deca"? maybe an extra layer to make sure it performs well in your bag's ball pocket... i dunno

Gotcha. Thanks for clearing that up. Sorry if I came across crass.

Seems like the Penta is flying off of shelves here too. Thankfully they are keeping them in decent stock. I was willing to give it a try and was expecting it to be more hype than anything else, and to go through my normal early season testing of premium balls to find the best one for me... but I was just so impressed with it, at this point it's in the bag and I'm not even trying anything else. It's good stuff.

    • On my car I got the extended power train warranty. I do read the fine print most of the time. Though at now 37, my eyes aren’t what they were 10 years ago.    The problem with most of these extended warranties on electronics and appliances is you don’t register the warranty with the place you buy the warranty from, which I’ve always found strange. Unless it’s GameStop then you know Alina drops her Switch in the next two years and the screen cracks they’ll replace it. No questions asked.    You buy a slow cooker at Walmart for $50 and the extended warranty is say $6, you have to go through a third party to register your product for the warranty, and it’s pretty damn annoying. Target is the same way. Anything you buy the extended protection on you have to go through a third party.    Why do retailers go through a “broker” for warranties? Because they don’t wanna deal with it? They make me talk to someone from another country, that I can barely understand, when I need my warranty fulfilled.   Sorry for the rant.
    • You may be able to find a regular flex Blueboard on the second hand market. I’m little more than half your age so I swing a shaft that launches pretty low so I don’t have a lot of experience with Regular flex (other than when I try to hit it I miss way to the left).    There are other shafts, such as the newer Ping Alta that I’ve heard good things about. And one that no one talks about. The Jupiter shaft. You can get this shaft for a $100 with a grip and your Ping adapter installed. I was talking to the golf manager at Dick’s Sporting Goods here and he has one in his driver and has nothing but good things to say about it. I thought about getting one for my Paradym Triple Diamond to play it a little shorter, but haven’t pulled the trigger yet.

    • Meanwhile, another old Tour Edge guy switches to Callaway for this season. I have a different problem, course dependent set-ups. What I’m wondering is if @dragonsmhas the 8 iron set 5-PW, AW, GW or just 5-PW, GW. Because the PW is 42°, AW 47°, and GW 52°. Because that could potentially be a gap there. The 5-iron to 6-iron length jump is 5/8” instead of 1/2” so you should be careful of that.    @WUTiger the problem most people have with 3-woods is they don’t play them far enough back into their stance. And they usually don’t have enough loft and the shaft is too long. So 3HL, 4 or 5-wood is probably better for most golfers. I do the “Frankenwood” approach. I have both the 3+ and 5 woods. I typically will either add two degrees to the 3+ on 6600 yards or longer courses, or take a degree off the 5-wood on shorter courses than 6300 or so, and use the 5-wood shaft for both. I don’t usually find a situation where I need both the 3 and 5 wood on a course. I don’t play from 7000 yards it’s no fun. Edit: I mostly agree with @WUTiger on the gapping, although a lot of the newer even fixed hosel fairway woods are made better than what we had when we were playing the old Exotics XRails.
