I went to target yesteday to look for some Reds and they had one box left. Of course, someone had replaced the TP-Red sleeves with some Burner sleeves. Lovely.

After a complete round I will give my assesment.

Off the driver this ball is a damn rocket, and can hang in the air forever. I still got great bounce and roll even with the added spin. Off my irons I have no complaints really other than the slightly firm feel. The spin around the green was adequite, but not nearly as much as a Pro V1 or Nike Plat.

I heard these balls are no longer going to be sold soon because they are coming out with something new. Anyone hear anything about the taylormade TP black/reds?

Taylormade is coming out with a 5-piece ball, the Penta TP, that will be played by its staff in the PGA Championship. I believe the release to the general public will be later this fall though. Someone had a post recently about it. I prefer to play the TP Red over everything else. Comparable to the Pro V1x, but I think it's just a little longer and resists scuffs a little better. The TP Black will spin more. I know you can find them at most retailers for $27.50 per dozen, so they are affordable for a tour level ball. Worth a try if you've never used them.

I figured they were close to being discontinued with the $27 price tag. The markdown makes them the absolute best ball for the money imo.

TP Black spins LESS, not more. TP Black is comparable to v1x, not v1. Blacks are 3 piece, reds are 4 piece which spins more.

That's wrong (or was true for the first version, but isn't for the LDPs). And it's been covered several times already on the forum, so I'm not going to get into it here.

I play the blacks. They are $27 a dozen at walmart. You can't beat that price for that type of ball.

LOOOOVE the TP Reds.

However, trying to locate some TP Blacks because I want some more bite around the green.

Either way, for the money, I haven't found a better ball. I sincerely hope they don't discontinue them or increase the price for that matter. I've got this little sliver of hope in my head that with the dropped price they sold a ton of them and realized they're just going to undercut the rest of the 4-piece ball market. =)

Been meaning to try the Gamers though.

Is a 5 piece ball even necessary lol?

The Penta TP is the first 5-piece ball that I'm aware of! Anything the manufacturers can do to get us to buy expensive golf balls...they will do. If they can hook us with the discounted TP Red/Black golf balls, they have a better chance that we will buy these new balls. According to TaylorMade, these balls will offer performance benefits for all swing speeds. I know how I am, and I'll be the first in line to pony up $50 or so for a dozen of these 5-piece balls so I can immediately deposit them into the trees or lake at my course! But wow, I hit it 6 yards further! Hooray!

    • Of course. I've used different words to start, but like 90-95% of the time it's been this one. And I'm unlikely to switch now.
    • Welcome to TST @Camjr.   We're glad you've joined.
    • Angle is not a factor. I hit the ball 100’ high. Par is net birdie. My CH is 16. The rough between the bunkers is like 10’ wide though. That’s not something you’re going to try to hit on purpose. Most of the area to the left of that is fescue/native vegetation and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a flat lie in any of it. It’s the second hole.
    • Hello all.  I'm about to be 57 yrs old, started playing when I was 16, and have quit and restarted the game more times than I can count.  I had started playing a weekly round with a friend, and finally made the jump to Senior A shafted Tour Edge clubs.  Instantly gained 10 yds with an easier swing (why didn't I make that jump sooner???).  Glad to be a part of the group. Cheers all,
    • I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
