Has anyone else gone through this and what happened? Did you quit? Work through it? Or did you become content with a lesser game?

Late to the party here. But, yeah, most of us have gone through something like this.

I've been playing since 1993. My HCP has been as high as 36 and as low as single digits a couple of times.

In addition to what everyone is saying above. Some really good advice from @saevel25, @3jacker, @gbogey and of course, @iacas. Here's another thing to try.

  1. Find some kids in your life that you like.
  2. Invite them to a par-3 course. (We have one by us where most of the holes are 50 to 90 yards. The longest hole is like 140 yards.)
  3. Play 9-holes at a par-3 course with 1 to 3 young kids.
  4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 until you are smiling and loving golf again.

Back when my kids were little, my wife and I would take our son and daughter out to the par-3 course. Then she and I hit all the tee shots then the two of them would chip or putt until they get the ball in the hole. My wife and my son vs me and my daughter made for a pretty close competition and a lot of fun. Be sure to laugh at yourself.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

Playing over 50 years means that you’re not young anymore and age does make some difference. My scores are creeping up and I’m getting to the point where I’m just happy to still be able to play. We all age differently.

I couldn't agree more with the coach ..I've been very lucky to have met a super nice new member at my club who used to be a Club pro coach + HC golfer(scratch at present) ... now retired not stressed about comps etc ..we get out least once a week ... have helped me greatly with my game, not major changes but just small changes ..

I have now seen my HC fall to 7.4 from 10+ a couple of months ago.. and if I put few more decent rounds in should well test my lowest 6.7 from this time last year pre my APRIL onwards slump ..

Much of what my new Golfing mate/coach has helped me with isn't so much technique (outside some chipping tech)

but basics ...like

"Whats your target" ???

"whats your miss" (where would you like to end up if you didn't hit your target)

"Take your time don't rush... PSR same every time"

slow it down( I've always had an issue if my swing goes wrong to next time try extra hard aka harder faster')so he's been getting me to hit say a 6-7iron where I would have hit a 8iron just 50-60% swing not my 80%+ efforts

work with what you have my natural flight path is fade ..but many time I've been trying to force a draw etc and mostly isn't a good outcome..

....

So, I haven't quit ...just taking a little winter siesta. I have been doing some Stack training and a little office carpet putting with the Pelz Putting Tutor. I'll see where I am in another 6 weeks or so and then maybe look for some instruction.

I will say, I have been working some drills over the winter to get rid of some swing flaws and I am now in a funk...the worst I have been in for probably 10 years. It has been/is VERY frustrating at the moment. So much so that I do not even want to go play until I figure it out. Having said that, I keep telling myself that I have a good swing and this is just a mental funk (probably over thinking way too much stuff) and that I have got to get out of my own way. I say this to say that I very much sympathize with you but just look for that positive mindset and fight through it. I know I am going to get past this and the drills will have been for the better overall. I just have to be patient and let the storm pass...haha

If only you knew a good golf instructor… or had a Member Swing thread you could post to.

I mean… I hope you're working with an instructor locally. So, talk to that person, too. And if you're not… see the first paragraph. 😄

I actually know a "GREAT" instructor (albeit quite a distance away) and have access to the best member swing thread...😄.  But, yes I am working with an instructor. He is the one that is giving me the drills and up until this last drill, it was really going great. Something about the last drill has gotten me into the worst funk I have experienced in quite some time. I have a couple of ideas that hit me last night that I am going to try over the weekend. If that doesn't seem to resolve the issue, my member thread will for sure get reinstated. I really wish PA was not so far away. I would LOVE to be able to work with you one on one in person with regularity.

Keep working with the guy or gal. Talk to them about the difficulty you're having.

But also…

  • I have evolvr.com.
  • Post in your Member Swing topic anyway - it's just a way to stay accountable and document progress. You can ignore — or not — comments others (or I) make in the topic.
  • Really, talk to your person about the recent struggles.

Will do. I am in constant contact with him. Almost on a daily basis.

Sorry for the thread hijack. I'll move to my swing thread.
