I voted for Titleist. I like the fact that you don't have to look for the TP or Tour version of their various clubs. I would not be opposed to having Bridgestone or Srixon in my bag, I think they make excellent clubs and balls.

I voted Nike. I don't necessarily think they are the BEST in every category, but they are my favorite. I just like the look and feel of the Nike stuff.

I´ll go with Ping due to history, engineering and client service.
Also, they make clubs that works, where function it´s more important than form or marketing.

I do love my TaylorMade R5 drivers. Yes I have three of them. One each for practice, league and

This is something I've never heard of before.

Why would you reserve a club you hardly ever use for what I am assuming you see as a "special occasion"? (tournaments, whatever that means - not trying to be a smart arse, but in Australia, pros play tournaments. Amateurs play competitions.) Why not get used to one driver and use it all the time? Specially if you've got different shafts. I mean - do what you like, but what is the reasoning here? If you hit it 10 times in a round is it going tom wear out?

Once upon a time I would have said Callaway. But their customer service let me down severely this past week.

Titleist balls never let me down. Acushnet!

I played Ping irons for close to 22 years and just recently switched to Titleist. Ping has the best customer service in the industry.

I'm surprised Titleist is the leader in this poll.

They are the ball leader in sales, but their ball is essentially identical, or at least not signficantly different from, the top balls of several manufacturers.

Their clubs have a huge representation among club pros, to whom Titleist is more generous, on average, than other companies are with club pros. For related reasons, they've always had a following among very good amateur players (scratch or near scratch), but even that was under intense competition from other companies.

Their club offerings for typical avid golfers (i.e., game improvement and so-called "super game improvement" clubs) have lagged well behind several other companies for years in terms of sales, technology, and independent ratings from multiple sources. There was a bit of a dry spell after the early-mid 90s DCI era.

Their newest clubs appear better than anything they've come out with in years.

The survey results suggest to me that sand trap readers may include a larger percentage of very good golfers than the population in general.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I voted Titleist because I love my new irons. AND I've already started the season six strokes better than my last season start - hopefully a good omen. I did buy a box of Pro V1x to see what they're like, and I wish I had just bought a sleeve. Maybe I'm not "advanced" enough to enjoy the benefits, but I'm just not seein' it yet... I'll go back to the $20/dozen balls and leave it at that. At least until I get those sponsorship deals...

Actually, I am not surprised by this. I believe that most people who spend their time on a golf forum are to some level obsessed with golf, and therefore spend a good amount of time on the course or on the range getting better at golf. Also the Titleist marketing machine (see top of screen) could also have something to do with thier lead.

All of the club companies mentioned in the poll are excellent and I am sure enough people on this website can say they have had a good or bad experience with them all but I voted for MIZUNO ...reason being is that they make great irons (see my sig) and that they are conservative in their approach...think about it when you go to your local golf store you do not have any trouble finding Callway, Ping, TaylorMade or Titleist products as they are abundant...however, where are the Mizuno irons? Usually somewhere near the back, stuffed away in a corner...maybe that is because they are not as popular or maybe it is because their popular irons (MP's) are not for most players (I am still trying to get to that point) but whatever it is I like the fact that the irons I play are not the most popular in the store, at the driving range or on the course...just my 2 cents.

P.S. I also like as I play the Burner series woods and hybrid and I am getting ready to try the Burner TP ball...I have been playing the old TP red.

Before I get to my point, I need to say you have to love a thread that includes one guy having sex with his Mizuno irons and another guy who "loves Taylor Made balls."

Actually, I am not surprised by this. I believe that most people who spend their time on a golf forum are to some level obsessed with golf, and therefore spend a good amount of time on the course or on the range getting better at golf. Also the Titleist marketing machine (see top of screen) could also have something to do with thier lead.

I agree with the majority of this. However, the "Marketing Machine" had little to do with my putting their clubs in my bag. In fact, with the exception of the commercials for the ProV1 what other equipment spots do you see from them in a typical golf telecast? I see a lot more from Nike, Callaway and TaylorMade. I chose to put their clubs in my bag because I felt they were the best clubs out here for what I wanted to do. I am in that mid-handicap range where I only need to shave a few shots to get to single digits but at the same time could put up some pretty high numbers if I go the other way. I felt that Titleist gave me the best of both worlds. They were forgiving enough but still allowed me to make different shots. I did not want a set of super game improvement irons that would get me to a lower handicap only to have to discard them to try and lower it further. I feel that Titleist clubs are for better golfers. I want to be one of them. One of the best ways to do that is follow their lead on the tools of the trade.

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
