Last (Golf) Thing You Bought

Recommended Posts

Bought some Titleist Vokey wedges today, I've been hitting some 588's for a while but tried a buddies Titleist Sunday morning and absolutely fell in love. Don't know if it was length or bounce but I hit them better so I had to get a set for myself.

Also bought another 2 dozen TP3's, I will soon have enough for at least another year at my current rate at 1 ball per round.

Callaway RAZR X Black 3 wood came straight from the factory after I ordered it through Golf Galaxy.  I got the UST AXIVCore Blue shaft upgrade for free and a green/black GP Multicompound Grip.  All for the low, low price of $109 + tax!! I haven't had a 3 wood in my bag for a couple years now, and it's great to finally be able to really attack par 5s

I liked it better than the RAZR Fit and the Adams F12; although the F12 was a close second.  I didn't even bother with the RBZ since it was $200+.

Check out the TPC course down there.  If you liked the Plantation East you'll like TPC Myrtle Beach.

What I've tried to buy but have been unsuccessful:

  • Tour Edge Exotic 3 Wood -  On one day I went to 5 local stores that carry the brand.   3 had none at all in stock, 1 had only last year's models, and 2 had a couple in stock but none with stiff shaft.   While driving home I stopped at a driving range and found Tour Edge doing a manufacturers' demo on the range; got to try out all the different shafts and bought directly through the factory, with a significant discount as well!
  • True Linkswear Tour shoes -  Went to about a dozen different stores over several weeks, and most didn't carry any of the color I wanted (white/black) or if they did they weren't in the right size.   I finally gave up and ordered from True.
  • Clothing -  Wanted to refresh some outfits for the fall so I went hunting last weekend for some specific things.   Couldn't find my size in anything I was looking for, and I'm not a tough size to fit (large shirt, 34 waist)
  • Golf Gloves - Went to a Dick's last weekend to get some new gloves, and was shocked to find how little inventory they had.    There were huge spaces between the displays, with relatively little choice.    I couldn't get any of the model gloves I liked because they only seemed to carry a few different models - Weathersofts, several Slazenger, and some FJ rain gloves.

Mr. Local Golf Retailer, I'd like to introduce you to Mr. Online Retailer.    He's the one who's going to kick your ass in the business because you can't seem to carry any inventory anymore.

I've had similar experiences myself these last few weeks.  Went to local pro shop where I had a gift card for winning a closest to hole competition.  Only club they had in left hand was a putter.  All their shirts were either small, medium or XXL.  Any shoes that I was interested were only available in sizes less than 10 or over 12.

I realize the season is winding down, but you'd think they'd learn season after season to order more of the most common sizes. The lack of selection in local stores combined with the discounted pricing of online retailers makes it almost impossible to support local businesses.

Not sure if being a rookie counts for posting here, but I bought my first set of irons, Callaway Diablo Edge and Odyssey White Ice putter and Callaway 4.5 Lite(can't remember the exact name). Few more range trips then I hope to get my first round in about 4 years in.

  • 2 weeks later...

This weekend was an expensive one for golf gear...

1.) Re-shafted my R11 with the Blur 65 Stiff... Same exact shaft I have in my Razr-Fit driver.  Will be fun to see how these two perform on the launch monitor.

2.) Re-shafted my 54* Vokey wedge which snapped on a tree during my last round.

3.) 2x pairs of Kahuna shorts from Lululemon

4.) 3 dozen Taylormade TP5's (buy 2, get 1 free)

Now I gotta get out on the course!!

I will be very intrigued to see how this plays out.  If the results are comparable (or ravor the r11) that will probably be the excuse I need to re-shaft my D3.  Can't wait to find out how you do!

But the real question is, why did you throw it at the tree in the first place?

1.) I know... I gotta get over to my fitters and jump on Trackman.  I'll post the results on TST.  The only difference is my R11 is a 9* loft.  The Razr-Fit is 10.5*.  Same shaft length.  I did have the R11's shaft spined. Not sure if Callaway did that or not?  I'm assuming they would, considering Ely is a world class fitter.

2.) Left with a short 80yd wedge shot to the green when I was up against a tree.  Playing partners told me to chip out sideways... I denied their request and tried to be a hero.  The tree won after I hit the shot (hard and clean) to ~ 10yds short of the green... The shaft wrapped around the tree just below the grip.  The only good thing to come out of it... Was I got up and down and made par!

OK, so it's not quite apples to apples, but I still wanna hear how it turns out.  My D3 is a 9.5 but adjustable to 10.25, and both have 45" shafts, so mine would have almost the same specs.

Where did you have the shaft done?  And did you also buy a second tip so your old shaft is still usable if you so desired?

Roger Dunns in Santa Ana.  Naz on a second tip.  Figured if I don't like it... Then I'll trade all this 'stuff' in and get a real gamer next season when the next big thing hits the market.

I have an H4 also, and will be reviewing it (briefly) as well as the Pro LX rangefinder, which has a magnetic area for the H4 to "dock": PRO LX | Laser Rangefinder with Slope Technology Hit the right yardage with the PRO LX laser rangefinder. Back in the day when I played soccer I wore metal tipped screw in studs that might as well been roller skates off the grass. I ate shit several times hurrying from locker room to field with this style of shoe. Maybe I’m just being optimistic.
