Won't/can't root for a dick in golf or life. The chip on the shoulder about his past is BS - 'I was pushed around growing, so I won't take any prisoners'. You gotta get past that at some point. Especially when things have cleared up. Grow the eff up.

I have never heard of stories about Tiger yelling at or demeaning a fan.

He had Stevie Williams for that. He rarely acknowledged anything or anyone around him.

You said: "I would have no problem if his emotions were genuine. My suspicion, however, is that he cherishes his "intensity" photo ops. The putt he just made wasn't difficult or clutch.....he could have swiped it multiple times and still won."

Crenshaw's putt wasn't that hard either. It was a couple of feet but I'm not doubting his emotions were genuine. I am questioning why you think Poulter's emotional display is not genuine. He didn't react BECAUSE he made  a two foot putt. Nor did Crenshaw.

Not sure why I had to write it twice.

I think a lot of the anti-Poulter guys just hated watching him kick butt in the Ryder Cup. I wonder, @NEhomer and @Bucki1968, if Justin Thomas' "F*** yeah" in the exact situation, or Tiger's fist pumps and other on course antics rubbed you the same way? I like when they show their emotions out there, but if it doesn't bother me when the guys I like do it, I can't complain when those I don't like do it.

I just think he's a jerk. I think back to that incident with Matsuyama from a few years back, where he went out of his way to embarrass Matsuyama while simultaneously embellishing what had actually happened. Factor in that by his own expectations he's a huge disappointment and a loudmouth, and you've got a recipe tailor-made for me to dislike you.

I had no problem with his reaction Sunday. I think it was genuine.

But I was rooting against him something fierce.

I get that, and I think you're 100% correct about the chip on his shoulder. I give him a lot of rope because of a story I read about him years ago. He talked about growing up in a poor family, getting a job working in a pro shop as a young kid, where they made fun of his working class accent. He'd see others his age come to play dressed in expensive outfits he couldn't afford, and playing new expensive clubs. He was the guy who was refolding or hanging the merchandise they tried on and discarded. He talked about practicing endlessly in the dark after work, eventually dropping out of school and turning pro. I don't remember exactly what he said his handicap was at the time, but it was high enough that he was ridiculed for doing so. I loved the story, admired his grit, and have been a fan ever since. It also might explain his flashy style of dress and lack of a "polished" persona.

Turned pro off four: http://www.golftoday.co.uk/golf_international_mag/features/ian_poulter_interview.html

I do think he has calmed down a bit since late 2000s and whilst I wouldn't say his recent troubles have humbled him, he comes across in recent interviews with Sky as a lot more rational than he used to.

Currently focusing on: Key 4 - shorter backswing.

Spieth can accuse someone's caddy of being a crap bunker raker and blame them for  a double bogey. Poulter has a go at Matsuyama for belting the green with his putter.

Now...imagine if Poulter was seen photographing a bunker after it was poorly raked and submitting it to the PGATour.  And then blamed a three putt on it. And imagine if Poulter bashed the green with his putter. :-)

If truth be told, the picture below is the reason why so many people dislike him. All this and no stroke play win in the US. :-)

Poulter ostentatious? Never.....

I didn't root for Stevie either. Same mold. Not sure what that had to do with Tiger though. If anything I would think that type a behavior from caddie would be a distraction.

I can't speak to whatever incident with Spieth you're referring to, but even factoring that it, I don't think he's shown a pattern of dickhead behavior.

I don't mind Poulter having a lot of flashy cars and homes. That means nothing to me. It's the way he treats his fellow players and the media and the fans. He's just a jerk, and to make it worse, he doesn't even win!

I am no Poulter fan, but there are some double standards at work.

And in any case you've agreed with me. The hate stems from a lack of wins, largely.

A "The Schnozz" reference!!! In a golf forum discussing Ian Poulter. Well done.

Not surprising - after all it's a mad, mad, mad, mad world.

Poulter can play in the Masters, but I hope Tiger gets  'da big doubleya'

But then again, what the hell do I know?

I understand that he won yesterday. That does not discount the literal years where he talked cash shit and did nothing to back it up.

I don't think it's double standards. Spieth doesn't have a decade of this behavior under his belt. It's different, and it's easy to see why it's different.

It's exciting when a brash talent takes the world by storm. If I'm gonna have to listen to someone mouth off, I'd rather them dunk on me and mean it. It's much more annoying when they talk trash and can't hit it out of their shadow.

He has a reputation as an incredible team and match player and has done more than "nothing".

He has won a lot less than you'd think you'd have to to have the millions he has - I don't think his clothing business could be THAT profitable - but he's one of those guys whose attitude just sticks in the craw and they never get over it. A bit like people whingeing about Tiger's "T-shirts" (mock turtleneck - ;-)) eight years after he stopped wearing them.

He's a passionate player who's a complete dick a lot of the time, but I don't think all of the criticism is warranted. His win last week was impressive and he deserves credit for that.

Seriously - if he was photographed taking out his phone and photographing a bunker and then showing it to a PGATour official, I think it would be seen as the biggest douche move of the decade. Spieth probably regrets doing it. He's too smart to repeat that sort of stuff.

Not a Poulter fan. No encounters or anything, just accounts from other people and what I see on tv. Reminds me a lot of Colin Montgomerie but more annoying. He just rubs me the wrong way. But it's whatever. Congrats to him on finally winning a stroke play event in the States. Took him long enough for someone who has a mighty big ego of himself.

Except when it's in the Ryder Cup! Or this past week! When Poulter was routinely kicking our collective asses in the Ryder Cup, a friend of mine asked what the US needed to do to have a chance to win. I told him that we needed to find a guy like Ian Poulter!

As far as winning a lot of money goes, there's a guy from here who is on the Tour and has never come close to winning anything! He made 1.3 Million dollars on Tour last year! Not saying it was easy, just saying that you don't have to win a lot to make a damned nice living out there. Hell, 1.3 Mill is less than some winner's purses these days.

Nobody's perfect, Poulter has a few flaws, but then so do I.

For me, Ian Poulter is one of those players who make golf worth watching. He's passionate, shows his human side and brings a sense of theatre to the game.

You had to write it twice because it's retarded. Please point out where I remotely suggested that all players showing emotion on the last hole are disingenuous unless the putt they just made was difficult. In Ben's case, he carried Harvey Penick's coffin that week.

Players who's win is pre-determined prior to holing out don't generally go all intensity dude on the shot. That's all I'm saying and at that, I copped to quite possibly mis-reading the whole thing.

    • It’s simple. Hook it onto the tee box of the adjacent hole. Get a GIR with your approach. Birdie hole. #5 Hook it to the adjacent fairway Hit green with next shot. Birdie hole. I call it the Bill Method.
    • I’ll have to pay attention more attention to the area when I’m there. I know the area to the left of the bunkers off the tee is fescue/native vegetation but I can’t remember what’s around the tee boxes. Something to consider still is that you can’t see the green from the tee. You can’t even see all three bunkers IIRC. So I could have a line on the drive but still not know where it ends up. I think I’d be a lot more comfortable going with driver if I played here more regularly and had a log in my head of where shots tend to end up like I do at the other county courses. I have never hit driver on this hole off the blue tees. I have done it from the gold, but the length and angle are different, and during casual rounds when I didn’t care that much about score. I’m not sure the best time to try it is the second hole of a tournament. Or at the very least, I’m uncomfortable with the idea and that’s probably enough reason not to do it. I see what you’re saying. Wind is supposed to be pushing out more to the right on Saturday, too. I could probably aim right at the bunker and not end up in it. I don’t think there’s anything near the green other than that tiny bunker that would give me trouble. Well, trouble in addition to my short game deficiencies that is. Yea, me too. All I’m thinking is get it in play, put it near the green, chip on and two putt for 5. I’ll have plenty of opportunities to use my length as an advantage later. You realize all of this theory crafting will be moot when I chunk it off the tee, right? 😆

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.
