But even the 5 iron wasn't good enough for you.  You wanted the 3 iron!!  When the 3 iron broke its owners favorite tee, you were the only one that could afford to pay to fix it.  But you wouldn't do it unless the 3 iron agreed to let you "hit it" for awhile in order to get all of the other clubs in your bag, and everybody elses, to like you more.  After using the 3 iron for several rounds and making a few good shots with it, you started to get cocky and greedy ... hitting tricky punch shots under trees, using it out of a bunker Seve style, etc, you even made up a goofy African inspired victory dance that everybody started copying, and finally it couldn't take it anymore and told the entire country club that shes only in your bag because you paid to fix the tee.  Now all of your clubs hate you. However, one day, when you see your (ex) friend trying to go about hitting the 5 iron the honest way (working at it on the range), one of the bully club members starts to harass him and threaten him, you finally do the right thing and go stand up for your friend, reminding the bully that you all used to play together on the putting green with your dads' old clubs, and that one time when he fell into the practice bunker and twisted his ankle, you carried him home while he was crying all the way. Bully makes nice with your ex friend, ex friend appreciates your help (youre still ostracized for now though), all with the help of bully number 2's slow clap, and unbeknownst to you, the 3 iron is watching the whole thing, and decides she wants to live in your bag forever!!

This just sounds like a daytime soap opera, the kind your friend watches when you bring him his homework and you notice tiny tears forming in his eyes while you uncomfortably try to bring up what happened in class with the saga of Judy and Greg.

Lol.

I finally ended up voting and went with 4-iron.

This sounds a little like a Taylor Swift song.

I was thinking Some Kind of Wonderful, Sixteen Candles, or Teen Wolf but that is actually perfect. LOL.

LOL. Then as you walk off into the sunset down the fairway with the 3i, your ex-friend and the bully, this song starts to play as you punch the sky in victory. It freeze frames and the credits roll.

6i

My irons get worse the lower they go until I pull out my 3 hybrid. Also I've noticed that while I hit my 6i about 190 yards, I hardly gain any yardage from my 5i through 3i until i hit my 3 hybrid. I've never been able to figure that out.

Currently I am not sure.  Since I switched to modern Callaways I hit my 4i quite a bit for a variety of situations.

I am sure when it comes to my previous clubs.  1973 Hogan Apex blades.  Best club in the set was a 2i.  And IT was the best club in my bag.  Not as versatile as the Callaway 4i, but for a pure 2i there was nothing sweeter.

5 iron all day long. I guess when I look at my hybrid or fairway wood I just have a lot more expectations and end up topping the thing or sending it the wrong direction.

Its not the dreams in the recesses of you mind, its the approach and how you go at it Roddy

7i

I am okay with the 6i and 5i off a tee, but not consistent from the fairway.  The 7i, on the other hand, I'm usually okay with whether off a tee or from the fairway.

This thread sort of reminds me of something my dad used to say all the time.

"I can cook anything. You might not be able to eat it but I can cook it." (He was a terrible cook).

I would guess that a good portion of us (including me) that think we are pretty good with long irons would probably find out that we would do better if we had hybrid alternatives, that fit us right, a lot farther down the bag than we think in a straight up competition with ourselves.

I'll say 5 iron. I hit that pretty consistently. My last set had a 4 iron, which I hit ok but frankly it didn't go much further than my 5 iron, so it didn't make much sense for me.  When I got my current set, I went with a 4 hybrid. Easier to launch in the air and definitely goes further than my old 4 iron.

I'm committing the rest of the season to the 4 iron - took the hybrid out of the bag.    The  4i is just more accurate on approach shots & better off the tee.     Not as high as the hybrid, but I'm not seeing any significant distance difference.     Also, it's awesome for low punch out shots - I've learned to hit this low running frozen rope shot  by playing the ball BEHIND my right foot, that if I hit the fairway, rolls out to just about as long as my usual shot.

My set only goes down to a 5 iron so far, but I hit that fine. Good height and similar distance gapping with the rest of my set.

I actually just ordered a 4 iron, so hopefully I'll be able to hit that one fine.

The longest I play is my 4i at ~210. I'm thinking about trying a driving iron since I swing irons much better than woods any day. But Now that dicks let go of all their pros, where will I get fitted?

    • You all are right, its not that big of an issue, I'll leave it alone, especially after looking at that picture of Tigers beat up putter. But I also noticed the small circle worn on the sweet-spot where he hits it every time, I definitely don't have one of those. Thanks for the replies
    • Committing to one brand of ball this year - Snell MTB Prime X, the 5 doz. pack. Like how they perform for me. At $18/doz., can live with cover scuffing. Iron regripping with GolfPrice MCC+4 Teams std. in red/navy. May be retiring Odyssey Dual Force after 30 yrs. Seems like I can't get it to the hole anymore. Kind of light and has lots of toe hang. My reg. group's hounding finally wore me down.    From Callaway preowned - trying out the Odyssey Tri-Hot 5K in double wide (less toe hang) and triple wide (face balanced). Both also noticeably heavier...we shall see.
    • WOW, it looks like he has been hitting stones with that putter to put all of those nicks into it.  I can't see how a ball would cause many those dings.
    • I'm fighting a knee as well as a foot so I "Feel your pain".  Luckily for me the PT is helping at this time and I am hoping knee surgery is not imminent.  Best of luck to you.
