defiantly worth as i noticed you have a 400 dollar driver and you will use the putter at least double the driver if you can spend that much on driver you can defiantly spend that much if not more on a putter

can't argue with the logic there.

having said that, even the best on the PGA Tour with their special handmade, customised, etc putters can have the putter going cold for days, weeks, months and years. then you have such winning stories as Jerry Kelly's $70 Cleveland Classic or Retief Goosen's Tiger Shark (what on earth is that and how much does it cost?) and the coin drops - its not the arrow, its the indian. it's a case of $600 will not cure the yips any better than $60. Q: would Tom Watson have made that 8 footer on the 72nd hole of the 2009 British Open if his putter costs $2000? I'm guessing not.

The basic store bought Scotty Cameron is worth the money. Its a finely crafted club and has unrvialed resale value. You'll have it for the rest of your life if you have chosen the putter smartly. Plus, they're not any more expensive than any other top end putter. When it starts getting ridiculous is the customized exclusive camerons some people seem to lust over. Like some guy that comes to the range i practice at sometimes beaming over his limited edition studio select button back. A $700 putter. Thats ridiculous. Im not spending 300 bucks for any single club, i dont care what it is or does. The touring pros dont even use those things.

actually pretty much any touring pro's scotty would cost you 1000, just for the Circle T.. any AK uses that exact putter, (the BB) altho his has a Circle T on it somewhere, so its probobly a bit more...

I never saw an insert on the one that AK uses, but if the BB is a tour inspired model my original opinons still holds true. Its an unessacary upgrade from the baseline scottys, which are great in themselves.

But basically, I think aside from a personal touch and some fine tweaking of the set-up characteristics, the pros play the same verson of the clubs we buy from scotty off of the rack. In those cases, i think you are paying for the circle t instead of the putter. Thats what i find a little silly.

No they are not worth it. They copied ping putters and pings are better and cheaper. People only use scotty's cuz tiger uses one. Actually all putters are worthless since you can putt with a brick on a stick as long as you have decent fundamentals. Putting is about practice and the ability to read putts, not the stick you choose to roll with. Think about it, putters are just needed to push the ball forward at a certain speed. Other clubs require loft, bounce, shaft flex, forgiveness, etc... Putters are just bricks on a stick.

This might be the dumbest post i have ever read....

Of course they all copied ping.. everyone copied ping! from Tm to cally.. everyone, but scotty is the only one who gets hate for it. If tiger didnt use one, i would still use my long kneck, because i dig the feel, and it swings like a mallet with a blade head. its sick. Ping has a long kneck as well, and i hate the feel of it. feels clinky and cheap to me. so by that rational we could all play a piece of rebar with a tin can on the end and not be effected at all? P.s. putters have loft too

Lazykoala,
Please post video of yourself making a 25 ft downhill breaker with a brick-on-a-stick. Followed by you immediately attempting to do it again. This I gotta see.

hmmm, you're giving me ideas. Maybe I should break out the dusty old croquet equipment (Jacques of course). The old lignum vitae mallet orda do the trick very nicely. It might also have a profound psychological effect on the competition.

Ignorant generalizations...

Virtually ALL putter manufacturers copied Ping's Anser design. Give it a rest!

I gotta agree. In my long time on the internet, this post is up there. It reminded me of the troll comments before trolling became well known in the mid 90's, which was probably before this guy was born.

my friend has a SC and ive got the odyssey sabertooth, i think both are great putters. the SC is heavier then mine but both gives you a solid feel when you putt. took sometime to get used to a quality putter coming from a target putter. shouldnt get anything just because of the name though. i spend over 2 hrs at golfsmith trying out every single putter they carried plus a few more times at another local shop till i decided on my putter.

Just received Newport 2 mid slant. Have played a mallet style Odyssey Black for last three years. Took it out without practicing last night and played. Like the feel, the sound, the look. Took a little adjustment, having used a much smaller headed putter, (a Cameron Newport with a compact head would really catch my eye), but got used to it, and most importantly, MADE PUTTS that were "have to make it" putts. Had been demo'ing different putters for several months.

Is this Cameron worth it? Yes. Was my Odyssey worth it (not far from the same price)? Yes. Whatever putter suits you is worth it, regardless of whether it is $300 or $50, just make sure it fits, is set up properly and you hit it on the sweet spot with the proper stroke for your putter.

I will say the cover that comes with this model, silver with red dots, is not to my taste at all, don't know if it has any value, but if someone with one of these model putters that REALLY likes the headcover and doesn't plan on selling it on ebay has some interest in my giving it to them so they have a spare or whatever, I would consider it. Send me a private message.

The irony is that everyone who hates my post probably loves scotty's and I'm not bashing them I'm just saying it's not worth the money. My logic is undeniable I have yet to hear a good counter arguement to the fact that the putter is not nearly as complex as clubs that require shaft flex, bounce, loft (>4-8*), grooves, etc... Therefore the putter is just for confidence and I'm sure that everyone can find a much cheaper putter that gives them just as much confidence if they didn't see the price tag. People automatically assume the greater the price the greater they will play.

I'll indulge you by treating you more seriously than your comment(s) thus far warrant.

First of all, things like shaft flex, loft, clubface material, grip, weight, toe hang, shaft length, lie angle, etc. do matter significantly to the world's best putters. Yes, even something like shaft flex can have a fairly significant impact on the putter. As to the "brick on a stick" comment you made earlier, it's no fluke that the world's best putters are incredibly picky about what putter they use, how it looks, how it feels, etc. The world's best putters don't change putters every week because they're all the same - just a "brick on a stick." In essence, you couldn't be further from the truth.

Well this thread was meant to talk about the average golfer as someone is asking if camerons are worth it. For your average golfer, a putter is mostly just a confidence thing and most people will just pick one they like. With other clubs though, people HAVE to make sure they get all the specs right for their swing. Therefore my logic is still undeniable that a cheaper putter will likely roll the ball just as well as an expensive one. If you want to be a tour pro and buy the $1000 scottys be my guest but I assume the average golfer will not.

I got to agree with you on the headcovers, theyre absolutley hideous. I swapped the one i got with mine with one of the older studio style headcovers. I wouldnt take it for free, lol. I havent been able to sell mine on ebay, either.

No, it's not. At the very least loft and lie matter to the average golfer. Toe hang matters. Feel matters. The looks of a putter matter.

Putters don't roll the ball. People using putters do. And to a lot of average golfers, the things I said matter. There's no "logic" to confidence, "feel," etc.

agreed. however, if you can putt just as well or better with a $5 putter from 1950, then the scotty is definitely not worth the money.

i've had my newport 2 since i was 13 or 14 and at the time i only wanted it because it was a scotty cameron. Now i'm 2 weeks from turning 21 and I don't care much about the prestige or name of the clubs in my bag, i just want to buy and use what feels best and benefits my game the most. Luckily though, of all the putters i've tried (blades only since mallets look funny to me) i still roll the ball best with my scotty :)

Yes a couple things matter in a putter but if we really think about it a lot more goes into other clubs. I'll say it again though, when people go for a putter they get fitted for what?....length and like 1* of loft? When people buy other clubs they get fitted for many more variables. I'll even quote some guy named jack waddell who wrote an article about club innovation on this very website, "Unfortunately, staying on the cutting edge never really changed my scores all that much." Therefore buying cutting edge scotty's is not worth the money.

    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    • Ah ok I misunderstood. But you did bring to light an oversight on my part.
    • I was agreeing with you/jumping off from there.
