Are gap wedges necessary?

I just got a 52degree gap wedge the other day and used it today. Worked like a charm in the range where my PW would overshoot the green and my SW would come up short. Popped the ball up and right onto the green.

I, too, love my gap wedge.

I threw my clubs into the lake so it's time to start over...

a gap wedge is necessary if you PW is 45* and you SW is 56* and you like hitting "full" wedge shots.

Knowing the loft of your PW is key. If you have a large "gap" like I used as an example, a gap wedge is a great addition.

For me - Yes. My PW (w/ TA-5 set) is 45 ° and my Cleveland 588 SW is 57 ° so the Cleveland 588 51 ° GW fills in nicely. And I use it a lot. Green side, chips, bumps, half chips, etc. It is a go-to club for me.
