Watching a celeb on playing lessons overshoot the green from off the fringe 4x's, a buddy (who has never played a round of golf) said " you don't have to hit the ball hard , its a golf ball " has helped me considerably. I try to think about that everytime i take any kind of swing.

A playing partner recently asked me about my grip pressure. This one is easy to forget with all the swing thoughts running through the head. Tension in the wrists and hands, even in small amounts, can ruin the golf swing.

The other thing that has helped me is to leave the range with a maximum of one swing thought for the round. Keep this one swing thought in your head, and focus on tempo and rhythm throughout the round.

Sounds like three thoughts to me.

ha ha.. fair enough. One specific swing thought... timing and rhythm is always in the back of my head.

When putting and hitting fairway woods, weight should be slightly on the heels. With irons it should be a little bit on your toes.

used this tip on the course today, actually worked really well.

How do you hit a putt fat?

I wish I didn't know what stubbing my putter into the turf felt like.

I would have to say being told to use an alignment aid when i practiced is one of the most important things i was ever taught about hitting a golfball. I used to (still do from time to time) have a habit of aligning too far right. When i did that, I would come over the top and then have to hold off the face to get the shot back on line. Using the alignment aid on the groud fixed that and its the only circumstance where ive seen a immeadiate improvment in my ballstriking.

The biggest thing wasn't told directly to me

Someone on here had posted a video of their swing and Iacas mentioned to them that they were pushing their hands away from their body on the takeaway. Next time I went to the range I slowed down my swing and noticed I did the exact same thing. Keeping my hands on the same line and not moving them away from my body has completely changed my swing so far this season

From a playing partner -- he explained and encouraged me to learn how to hit choke down/abbreviated swing shots to expand the versatility of a club. Before that, I was a guy who would just hit everything hard. Then one day he showed me how he could be accurate with an 8-iron from 160 yards to 100 yards. He hit 4 shots from different distances all with an 8-iron and they were all pretty close to the same distance from the hole.

With any distance I have 2 or 3 options about what to hit and how to hit it. It has greatly increased the ability to hit greens and get balls close.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Swing thoughts are your enemy.

You are right swing thoughts plague this game.

Get in this position, get in that position. Arrgghh. Dynamics make positions not the other way around. Nobody wants to talk about dynamics I wonder why. Maybe because dynamics can't be seen they can only be felt and feel is not real ?

The best advice I've heard: "You're just not good enough to get angry with yourself". I had a tendency to really beat myself up when I'd play poorly, but hearing this tidbit helped me look at the game in a different perspective. I calmed down and got much better at shrugging off my bad shots and bad days, and this really helped me stay in the moment of each shot. And lo and behold, I actually did start playing to the level that I thought I should be all along.

    • A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club? • Interesting that Scottie is #10 on the all time money list and he's been on the PGAT for 4 years. Of course, purses are bigger now, but  neat to look at non-the-less.  The list of top 18 money winners in PGA Tour history has plenty of surprises This list is updated through the 2024 RBC Heritage. To add, Scottie won 4.5 million at the Players, Jack played 44 seasons and won a little of 5 million on course.
