Hi Guys,

Got a question... Is AP1 or the Taylormade Burner Plus irons better?

I am about high 20s in handicap and looking for one that is more forgiving type...

thanks...

Get some game improvement irons. Something like the adams hybrid irons would be good for a 30 handicap.

Perfect advice. You won't "outgrow" those Adams clubs very fast either. They are a wonderful value.

As previously mentioned, check out the latest Nike Slingshots, as well as Callaway's irons. Like I said in another post, callawaypreowned is a GREAT way to get good game improvement clubs. Maybe something like this...Callaway Big Bertha Iron set, graphite stiff shaft.... i-brid 4 & 5, cavity back 6-pw. Like new, on callaway preowned right now for $579.00. Not that that would be your only option, but it's a great example of a set that is high quality, game improvement, includes "hybrid" low irons...and something you won't grow out of right away. To make it clear- I'm not a callaway staffer...lol.... I just think they have something for everybody.

I've been using a set of PowerBilt TPS 7.0 irons that I bought about 5 years ago ... I'm hoping that a properly fitted set of modern technology golf clubs will save me 5-10 strokes a round and help me keep a state of mind that will facilitate improvement.

There is always the hope that it is possible to buy a better game but it is never quite that easy. Nonetheless, if one is using equipment ill suited for their game, a switch to something more appropriate should make a difference long term.

That said... "Ping G10" (almost like cheating!)

I agree. i went to the callaway performance center, to get fitted. They sent me back with a raccomandation. Stay with some super game improvemant (such as mine clubs or the big bertha) and practice. The fitter told me that club fitting is not the answer to all the problems.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the current batch of SGI or GI iron sets. I'm also looking for new irons, and am focused on the Ping G10s and Cally X-20.

I use the Taylor made R-7's. Great club. I used to play several years ago and was shooting with great consistency with Hogan GS forged clubs. Well..that was a long time ago. I picked up this set and I'm impressed with the feel and how easily I was able to get back into the game without killing myself. I have a ways to go to get back into my original form...but every week I get better. One thing however...check the grip size and make sure that the feel is right for you. The first thing I did was to change the grips and instant improvement.

this is a difficult question to answer... how much of a game improvement club do you want (sole thinkness, offset, and other features will vary greatly even among forgiving type game improvement clubs). Also, you might consider some hybrids, but how many depends on you.

This is a great list to start looking at. I consider myself a beginner and I am using the TaylorMade R7's which I absolutely love. I would personally recommend them or the Callaway Big Berthas (for a little more forgiveness). Good luck in your search.

I think a wonderful value in golf, is when a beginner looks at game improvement irons from a year or 2 ago. With the newest stuff out, the year-old models usually get cut drastically in price. The upgrade in tech, over 1 year, is usually minimal and the beginner can benefit very nicely by the price cut.

New guy here, I am a lousy golfer but love the game. I was in your situation last year and bought a set of Cleveland CG4's at the end of the year at Dicks. 3i to PW was $400. They are a major improvement over my 20 year old Wilson forged hand-me-downs. I hit several different clubs on their practice range and went with the CG4's because they felt best to me. The TM rac's were a close second, but I liked the Clevelands better. When I stared looking, I was dead set on Callaways, but after hitting a bunch of clubs, they just weren't the irons for me.
If you haven't decided on a set and can wait a little longer, most stores will have end of year sales to make room for the new stuff.
If you're going to buy new clubs, hit a bunch of them and see what you like best. Ultimately there will be one or two sets that you like best, whether it be the club itself or the way you feel holding the club. Confidence always helps, and is what I think helped me shave about 10 to 15 strokes this year. Last year I was always in the 115 to 120 range, and this year I'm at about 102-103, and broke 100 four times so far. Hopefully by this time next year, I'll consistently be in the low 90's or better.

I am currently looking for a new set of irons.

I played a bit during my younger years and have just picked up golf again after playing with some coworkers. I would say that my handicap is about a 25.

Based on reviews i have narrowed my search down between the x20's and r7's.

My question is, is it a horrible idea for someone of my experience level to get the tour level irons for the x20's or r7's and use them as a motivation to play better and to improve swing? Should I stick with the GI versions or would it be okay for someone who spends 3hrs a session, 3sessions a week at the driving range to pick up tour irons and use them to improve his game?

Truthfully, man, go with the non-tour irons. The x-20's or r7's are both great clubs...and the progress you might make with them will not be hampered by the fact they are "non tour" irons. This game is tough enough for the 25hdcp getting back into it after some years off. Get those new (or nicely used), game improvement irons and hit the range. Like I said, your development of the life of those irons will not be slowed down. They are good clubs (Personally, I'd lean toward the x-20's if I were you, but I'm slightly Callaway biased

). I recently helped my uncle do very much the same thing your doing. Similar cap, similar questions. He settled on the Taylor Mades. Sidenote- A lesson thrown in there might be a nice idea so you don't work too much on developing bad habits. And try to not hit too many balls on rubber mats. They can give you some odd feedback. Some guys benefit, some guys don't. Good luck man, and keep us posted. Hope this helps.

I went and hit the X-20 and a3 back to back last week. I can tell you that the Adams a3 has a substantially bigger sweet spot than the X-20. As a high handicapper, I was sold!

I really think, for the mid-to-high and the high handicapper, the Adams line of clubs is extremely underrated. Very good game improvement clubs. Their line of hybrids are extremely effective as well. Especially for the higher hdcp golfer.

Good luck with the new sticks!

My recommendations are:
20-36 handicap try the Cobra S9 2008 in 6-PW,AW,SW
10-25 Taylormade R7's or Callaway X-20s 5-PW,AW

And add a hybrid or 2 for the top of the set. Just don't add 2 that carry less than 10 yards from each other.

I also like the Idea of the Mizuno blended sets with the hybrids that have shafts the same lengths as the irons they replace. But I have never hit any of these sets. The Taylormade R7s are a great deal right now, $499 for 4-AW almost everywhere.

Just my take though.

Same thing happened to me. I liked the X-20 but couldn't hit it anywhere near as well as I could the A3. It has inspired me to get an Adams 3 wood and wedges as well and they are all great.

Hi, can anyone give me any direction on the iron sets below that I am trying to decide on? I am a 24 and just took up the game again after 10 years or so (use to be an 18 in those days). I am seriously considering both the Mizuno Mx-19 (SGI) and MX-25 (GI).. anyone have any advice to share? The thing that makes the MX-25 appealing is that it's forged where the MX-19 isn't. But both were highly rated by Golf Digest and made the hot list in their respective categorys..

Thanks

    • Day 12: Same as last couple days, but focus was on recentering aspect of flow. When I recenter earlier I make decent contact most swings but if I recenter late or not at all it’s a roll of the dice.
    • A couple of things.  Some of the clubs in your bag should be dropped immediately.  A 2-iron for example with what obviously seems to be a lower swing speed or possibly not great swing yet is a definite no-no.  To be hitting that 120-140 yards, which I assume includes run, is a sign that you are not getting the ball airborne at the correct angle to maximise distance.  The reason your 3 and 5 hybrid are going the same distance is that your launch angle is better with the 5.  Loft is your friend. Ideally I would suggest going to a golf or sporting store where you can hit golf balls on a simulator without being disturbed to understand your club carry distances and hopefully swing speed.  With that information we can definitely guide you better.
    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.
    • Day 111 - Worked on my grip and higher hands in the backswing. Full swings with the PRGR.
    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
