The results are in.

      Today I went to the range with a specific goal of ranging in my new to me Cleveland TA7 irons. I have always known I don't get a lot of distance out of my irons, now I know exactly how little. All measurements are in yards carried. All with range balls.

4i=  140-145

5i= 135-145

6i= 130-150

7i= 110-140

8i= 130-135

9i= 90-100

pw= 50-75

Didn't hit driver today but usually I carry about 200-220 driving with a 9 degree driver, plenty of roll out resulting in 220-250 drives.

I am thinking swing speed and lack of hips have much to do with these results.I'm  6'1 225# large framed person.

Glad to see you got to get out with the new clubs. Range session after I get off work tomorrow? Wanna see those puppies in action. Maybe I'll bring the Eye2s instead of my normal bag

These are my averages from shot tracking app. Total distance, not carry. Carry for my 7i on GC Quad is around 160, but not sure how this translates through the bag.

Driver: 270

5W: 224

23 deg H: 211

4i: 140 🤮

5i: 189

6i: 181

7i: 176 (realistically more like 165, but I hit 7i on two downhill tee balls per round)

8i: 150

9i: 143

PW: 129

GW: 109

SW: 94

This is what matters.  Carry.  Do you own the quad?  I have a gc2.

I wish! I take lessons with an instructor who uses one. Usually we just work with just the 7 iron so I've never bothered to go through the entire bag on the launch monitor.

Eventually I'll get around to doing that, but on course I usually just take 5-10 yards off those averages as a best guess for carry.

Gotcha.  They're a nice toy if you're willing to take the plunge.

Yeah, I would get all my "reasonably good" average carry numbers with every club.  I'd also look at ballspeed too, so you can gauge how well you're hitting it.  As you probably know, you can "cheat" your distances with delivery, e.g., getting less spin on your irons and the like.  Ballspeed, on the other hand, is really good metric to look at.  Ballspeed is my primary data point.  That and I want to see a consistent start line to the right with under 1k draw spin with the irons and only a couple hundred with woods (keep hooks away).  For example, I know my 6i gets about 124-128 mph of ballspeed.  That will give me my 178-183 carry number with the spin I want at the clubhead speed I have.  Same for driver, I know that I'm striking it well, for the clubhead speed I have, if I'm getting 155-160 ballspeed.  FYI, be careful with ballspeed with the shorter clubs though; it's really easy to ramp up the ballspeed with over-the-top trap draws and make you think you're killing the ball haha.

I've strongly considered, but there don't seem to be many options between the handheld monitors like Mevo and SwingCaddie and the big boys like Trackman and GC2/GC4. I have an energized, free standing garage which I am in process of straightening out, and I would like to eventually get a simulator set up inside.

60 degree - 30      .

I swing very easy. I am working a lot on increasing swing speed with center hits. I seem to use my forward arm mostly since my trail elbow has some minor issues (physical). And of course prefer tee's around 6100 yards and LESS. I can avoid doubles and get my share of birdies around 5600 yards. I was fitted for driver and had swing speed of 95, but averaged 84 during the hour.

Update: My 60 degree wedge goes 60 yards - interesting to read this post from over year and a half ago - seems I am hitting clubs father have the 6 and 5 irons in bag now, probably each club goes 10 yards more, don't see my handicap going down yet though....changed to a 5 wood took out the 3 wood - just adjusted loft so its basically a 4 wood now.

I recently did a gapping session with my new clubs and here’s what it came back:

Driver: 260 (carry)

3-wood 225-235

3-hybrid: 210-220 (don’t really hit it)

4-hybrid: 195-210 (don’t really hit it)

3-utility: 210-220

4-utility: 195-205

5-iron: 190(185-200)

6-iron: 180 (170-185)

7-iron: 165 (165-175)

8-iron: 155 (150-160)

9-iron: 140 (135-145)

P Wedge: 130 (120-135)

A Wedge: 115 (100-120)

54° wedge: 30-100 yards

60° wedge: bunkers , high pitches up to say 40 yards.

Putter: on the green hopefully in the hole.

The woods (Driver and 3-wood) are the same carry as my Z 785 and F85 the ZX5 irons are between 3-5 yards longer per club, it’s really not that much of a difference in the longer irons.

Sample size 32 rounds. Dont hit my 5 iron so theres only a few shots for that. I use a 5 hybrid 25 degree instead. The 6 hybrid Ive only used sparingly.

Add/take 10%?

It’s pretty close. 100m is a little over 109y, but not quite enough over to call it 110y when you get to 500m we’d call that 546y in the States.

6i - 160 to 170 yards

4h - 200 yards

Driver - 225 to 275 yards though probably averaging 250. Used to be around 275 to 300 yards before when I played regularly.

SW and LW I never go for full shots unless I need a flop shot.  From 120 yards or so in it is almost always PW

Okay, let's get real.... true lofts are in parentheses. So here goes... 2021 Carry distances (TopTracer)

Driver 213 (unless I mishit, then it goes shorter)

5W - 195

7W - 185

5H (26) - 170

6H (30) - 160

7i (6i) - 153

8i (7i) - 143

9i (8i) - 132

PW (9i) - 120

GW (PW) - 103 to 108

50 - 90 (rarely used at this distance - I'd rather hit a 3/4 shot with the *cough* GW)

54 - 80 (irrelevant since I don't use it over 70 yds and only for 3/4 swings)

58 - 68 (also irrelevant since I don't use it over 40 yds and only for specialty shots)

* I never hit full shots with these clubs. I think my lob wedge goes about 70 yards on a full swing, but I have rarely needed to hit it full. Sand wedge is about 90, I think, full swing.

LOL................These are my distances as well.  Only exception is I don't carry a 3 iron.  I have a 50* gap wedge I hit 100y, but like you I do not hit my 54* sand wedge or my 60* lob wedge with a full swing.

    • This is an awesome breakdown. most of the bigger tournaments usually have one wave with the advantage, Thank you for the breakdown. If it is soft then it will be a lower final score
    • Over the past 15 years, the winning score has ranged from -10 to -20. Mostly around -13.  Here is Thursday and Friday weather. Saturday and Sunday weather. I think the course will play soft. Plenty of sky cover, lots of rain on Thursday. Fairways and greens will probably stay soft throughout the week.  In terms of tee times, I think Thursday morning and Friday afternoon have the biggest advantage.
