actually I do more than one would think.   not all par 5's are straight and open with no trouble.  a lot of time if I'm playing a narrow course I will play 4 iron off the tee, 4 iron again, and then whatever is left.....97% of the time its par or better.  I may hit driver once or twice a round....and if its a short course I take it out of the bag entirely.   Knocks tons of strokes of the game.......even if it is straight...I run out of room.  and no, I'm not yankin anyone's chain...I get my distances off trackman and course play.

I am 61 yrs old and have played since I was 8. Never been a long ball hitter, but have been consistent with these yardages for most of my life....the only thing that has changed, besides getting older, is the equip......from steel shfted blades to graphite shafter CB's

I keep forgetting to check my distance on my driver if i just want to put it out in the middle of the fairway. i think only like 250 but i almost always go after it. I only just poke it out rarely and i never check the distance. something i need to do.

Just curious.  What is your method for figuring out your distances?  On the course there are a lot of variables and range balls usually don't fly as far.  Are you going to take your own balls to a field and hit a bunch with each club and then laser the distances?

Everyones distances posted here have most certainly been verified by Trackman. Right? Right....?

Can you bring Trackman onto the course with you? I only rely on a lowly laser rangefinder.  Averages are just one piece of information as I think Mr Wiggles was alluding to. On Wednesday league night I hit a 220 yard 8-iron and a 120 yard 8-iron. Both planned. One a downwind flyer and one a high cut dead into the wind.

Reason for shorter iron lengths is due to a 3/4 cut-down swing for more accuracy/help keep swing on plane.  Looking to replace old 3 wood with RBZ strong 3 hybrid 18.5 degree or strong 5 wood 18 degree.  And looking to add 4H, preferably strong 21 degree in place of a 3 iron.

I have no doubt you play with players hitting about the same distance you do. I do the same at my club. You sure seem to have a lot of options off the tee between 200 and 235 yards.

Also, there ARE some courses with outdated tee box markers, and which have tees set up +/- 15 yards from those markers, and people will simply read off the scorecard how long the hole plays and then subtract their 2nd-shot distance to the middle of the green and think that's accurate, when it's not always the case.  That's why somebody may rely more heavily on rangefinders or gps rather than markers.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

I was playing with a couple of guys a few months ago, and on virtually every hole one of the guys would do his math in the fairway to see how far he'd driven it.  Of course, on pretty much every hole, he was doing the math from the blue tees on the scorecard, which were measured from the same tee box as the golds, even though those tee boxes were not in use and we were hitting from the back of the tee boxes where the whites were.  The whites were pushed up front and the blues were on the back side, and the golds were where the blues would normally be.  At one point, he actually wondered aloud what the white strip of concrete at the back edge of the tee box (this was the same guy who kept calling the hosel the "nozzle") was for.

He was unknowingly adding anywhere from 20 to 60 yards to every drive he hit by using the scorecard.

That may be the gentleman who was in front of my group yesterday.  Before we teed off in our club event, he asked me about my qualifying round on Thursday and I explained how well I was doing and that on one particular hole I "really piped a good drive" out there.  Before I could finish he cut me off to ask me how far it was.  I responded that I measured it at 285 and it was my best drive of the day and left me 70 yards to a wide open pin location (which I promptly hit a hosel rocket and ended up with double-bogie on the hole...which was the point of the story).

Anyway, he went on to tell me how sometimes when he really gets a hold of it, it goes 300-315.  Mind you, this guy was at least 60 years old with a knee brace and seemingly a bad back (from the way he was walking and warming up on the range).  I watched some of his tee shots in front of me and most were weak push-slices that probably traveled 175 yards).  There's no way he could ever have sniffed 300 in his current condition/age, but he sure was enthusiastic in telling me about it.  Makes you wonder where he gets his numbers from, 'cause it definitely ain't from gps tracking.

    • I kind of like this interpretation especially if you think about it the unplayable rule would probably put you in a better spot.  using back on the line releief.
    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
