i for one am the exact same way as you just stated. i can pound my Drives 280-320 but when i comes to my Gap, SW or 60 i hit so down on the ball with my hands back that my short wedge distances are weak. i have to really concentrate on keeping my hands forward with my lob wedge to hit it 80yds. I can without thinking, take the hardest swing and hit it 45yds but 100yds in the air. its something i have recognized and am working on. Just wanted to show that its actually more common with hard hitters to get under the ball with wedges.

59 yr old playin, since I was 9 yr old.

Driver  280        Have had accurately measured, 345 yd (long drive contest in 1995) and 425 yd (hole was 415 and I drove over the green, LARGE tail wind, 1971) drives

3W     230        An ole bubble shafted generic  $50 club  from early 1990ties

3H      215-220  Cobra baffler

4H      195-210  Cobra baffler

5H      175-185  Cobra baffler

5i        ?            Mizuno MP52       used mostly for raking ball out of trouble, seldom used. May drop it and get another wedge

6i        160-170  M 52

7i        150-160  M 52

8i        145-150  M 52

9i        130-135  M 52

PW     100-125  M 52

GW       75-95   Cleveland

SW       50-75    Cleveland

So .....does this help your game? If it does yur worrying to much about what others do....play YOUR game. I know someone that brags that he can hit his PW 160 yds......soooooo, I can hit my 6i that far and it still only counts one stroke, just like the crushed pw. Beat the course and U will beat alot of people.

Happy 4th of July Everyone ......play well and often

Well struck shots (not chunked, thinned, shanked or heeled) are as follows:

Driver - 260 yards

3w - 230/240 yards (off the deck/off a tee)

3i - 195 yards

4i - 185 yards

5i - 175 yards

6i - 165 yards

7i - 155 yards

8i - 145 yards

9i - 135 yards

PW - 120 yards

50° - 100 yards

56° - 80 yards

These distances have gone up recently as I have been working on swing changes.  My 9i used to be around 120 yards.  When I get flippy, the yardages drop back down, but I am working furiously to banish the sissy boy slap party from my swing forever.

Nope.  I have a 60°, but I hate hitting it so it's out of the bag.  I couldn't even give you an average distance because I was so inconsistent with it.  I'm also pretty good at getting the 56° to do what I want it to do, so the 60° isn't worth the trouble.

I am looking for a 5 wood or a hybrid for the gap between my 3 iron and 3 wood.

Not necessarily.  If you live in Colorado (Not an American so might not be the best example) and hit your 7 iron 160 yards then go vacationing in Florida for some of the winter where it is low altitude and humid that 7 iron might only be going 150 maybe even 140.

I had a family friend that is a pretty good average golfer and said he would consistently come up 1 club short when he played down in Georgia this spring (our altitude is high and air is very dry.)

I hit my 9i 150yards. I don't know how or why.

my 7i can go 175, my 6i can go 180.

fairway woods of 5, 4, 3, all go 200+ [no tee]

even my pitching wedge [basic "P" on club] goes 135.

my driver.. it goes over the range net at 200yds, and the net is pretty high, so.. probably 250ish.

My ball speed is 136.. don't ask me if i know what that means or about it, I dont know. ha.

Driver: 260 (Hit a few 270+ this year though)
3W: 240
3Hybrid: 225
4I: 190
5I: 180
6I: 170
7I: 160
8I: 150
9I: 140
PW: 125-130
SW: 100 (Full swing)

LW (60*): ~75 I guess but I never really take a full swing

These are approximates... The only thing I'm completely certain of here is that my 8I is almost exactly 150 every time and my PW is perfect for 120-130

Bp Lewis as a very good golfer myself and a long hitter by armature standards I have to laugh when I hear people off 13-15 handicap saying they hit 3 woods 260 and drivers 280-300 carry some tour pros good top pros don't average those distances I suggest you get yourself a set of bushnells as we all think we hit the all a lot further than we actually do:-\

Of all the people posting distances in this thread, I find it amusing you singled me out.  But I digress...

A few clarifications are in order:

1) I NEVER said I carried my driver 280-300.  Ever.  I believe I even specified that I had a lower than avg carry distance proportional to overall carry+roll. (Since having a driver lesson, that has changed and I'm getting the ball up in the air more...haven't played enough rounds to know how far I'm hitting it now)

2) I use GPS for every round and every distance I post.  How would a rangefinder help you with tee off distances anyway?  Point it back at the tee box after you get to your ball?

3) My swing is on this site if you care to see it.

4) I HAVE hit my 3w 260 many times.  That's not my average overall, but I have averaged close to it for individual rounds where I was hitting it well that day.  I hit that club much more consistently than I ever have my driver (and I think I illustrated that somewhere in this thread before).

I am a 13 handicap and can consistently hit my driver 270 yards.  I have measured this with a GPS and now for a fact how far my average driver goes.  A handicap has nothing to do with how far you can hit a ball.
