Guys, pros aren't trying to smash the hell out of their 8 iron like you are. Their short clubs are for scoring, they know how to hit them. Is 160 Tiger's max 8 iron distance? No. C'mon, common sense...

But sacrificing 30 yards. Seems a but much

What 30 yards are being "sacrificed"? A different club is used.....that's all. This ongoing love affair with hitting any individual club as far as possible has very little to do with getting the ball into the hole in the fewest strokes possible.

In David's bag....

Driver: Titleist 910 D-3;  9.5* Diamana Kai'li
3-Wood: Titleist 910F;  15* Diamana Kai'li
Hybrids: Titleist 910H 19* and 21* Diamana Kai'li
Irons: Titleist 695cb 5-Pw

Wedges: Scratch 51-11 TNC grind, Vokey SM-5's;  56-14 F grind and 60-11 K grind
Putter: Scotty Cameron Kombi S
Ball: ProV1

Exactly. I remember seeing Tiger hit a 9-iron 192 yards at the AT&T; last year.

The reason my 7 iron has such an extreme range is due to my teaching myself how to play as a kid. All I had was a 7. I used it for 100 yrs and180 yds. I have told friends in the past that I could play a round with a driver 7 iron and a putter. lol. I really rely on my 7. But even with a whole bag I'm still a lousy golfer. That is why I love golf. No limits to improvement!!

Though there are times when he hits a 6i 190. It all depends on course conditions, weather and topography.

Waste of time.  People ignore those things and simply assume that it goes that far whenever they "swing hard."  I saw Phil hit an 8i (or 9i?) 200 yards earlier this season, but that doesn't mean he can do that anytime he wants.  Yet they use those types of anecdotes to justify some guy they know who hits his 7i 200 yards

When they get good lies, the good players can hit it much longer than what that chart suggests. And I do know a guy that can hit his 7 iron 200yds. Seriously. ;-)

I don't think a 200 yard 7 iron is unreasonable in the right conditions. Granted, I can't do it...if I BLAST mine, it's maybe 175...but I can see how some could.

I just pulled this from the web (Golfsmith) and can't vouch for its veracity, but:

Average Carry Per Club

A 2009 article on the Swingman Golf website listed the average carry (the distance a ball travels in the air) of each club used by PGA Tour players over the previous four years. The statistics are based on the PGA Tour’s Shotlink system, which tracks each shot played on the tour. The average shot hit with a driver carried 260 yards and traveled a total of 287.3 yards, including the roll. An average 3-wood shot carried 238 yards and the average 5-wood carried 223 yards. The typical carry for a 3-iron shot was 203 yards; for a 4-iron 189; for a 5-iron 181; for a 6-iron 169; for a 7-iron 160; for an 8-iron 149; and for a 9-iron 136. The average PGA Tour pitching wedge shot carried 122 yards.

I still think that's a little much... And Phil probably averages over 190 with his 6 iron. They are about 1-2 clubs longer than me usually. So like 195-205

Here's my theory for the chart: Their tracking system tracks ALL of the shots they take. Now remember, scoring clubs for them are 8i-SW. These are clubs that they can easily control the distance with. So let's take 4 typical shots with a PW for example: 135 yds - very smooth, controlled swing 120 yds - 3/4 swing for accuracy and less spin 150 yds - full swing 140 yds - smooth, controlled swing Average - 136 yards Even though their full swing results in a 150 yard shot, they rarely hit that sort of swing UNLESS they have a perfect lie, such as off a tee box; I see many pros hitting a PW from 150 off the tee with no wind or elevation. That's why the averages are that low.
