Playing golf when tired/sleepy...don't do it, no matter how bad you want to play.

When I'm sleepy or tired, my game just goes out the window. My mind wants to play, but my body wants to take lazy, out-of-sync, chunky shots. Then my gameplay is poor, and I think about how I spent 40 bucks, and that makes it worse, so I just have to finish the game out to at least get my money's worth. And having a start time around noon is bad for me as well, as my circadian rhythm tends to drop around 1 to 2pm. Sometimes drinking a can of Red Bull works, sometimes it doesn't.

My point is, if your game is usually on, and if you're having a bad round, maybe you didn't get enough zzzz's. Maybe I can pack a pillow and sleeping bag for those times in-between shots following a slow group.

There's an article in one of the golf magazine about the effects of the energy drinks and how they can help your game. Lack of sleep definitely plays a roll in concentration.

I hate this.

Especially when a problem suddenly pops up in my swing, and I cannot figure out how to fix it.

Luckily, my family is a member at my home course, so we don't really pay, we just pay a set amount per month instead of per round.

On the other hand, when I'm not feeling 100% I tend not to overswing and sometimes play better. I can't say I've ever been sleepy on the course.

I could not agree more with the original post. The only difference for me is that teeing off before 12 noon is a complete waste of money & time as well as a blow to my scoring ego. I usually shoot my best scores with the sun setting.

I have to agree. Last Saturday I played with probably the worst hangover I've ever had and managed to play my worst round since I first started.

I actually managed to play a great back 9 - but my game was done by the time I hit the 7th hole.

I need to look that article up. I've played really well a couple of times after drinking an energy drink...I just assumed it was mental or a coincidence.

I did this almost every weekend when I first started playing "seriously" & never played well. I finally decided that golf was more important than hanging late and nursing hangovers. It really made a difference in my game. --LBB

Hehe this thread it making me reconsider going out on the razz tonight as I'm supposed to be playing tomorrow morning, but it's supposed to rain tomorrow, oh the decisions!

Playing tired is definitely a good way to put a round in jeopardy, even when I go to the range when I'm short on sleep things don't go well. I actually find the walk quite good for a hangover but the bits in between the walking, not such fun .

Playing hungover is probably even worse. I once had to leave the course in shame by the 10th hole because I ran out of balls.

new to the board.

this thread kind of struck me because i just started playing again about two months ago, but i havent been able to take any breaks since. i ended up playing three rounds last week, in the midst of work and travel, and the same this week. the past two days i've shot terrible and it's kind of got me down, but realized that i should probably take a day or two to relax and practice on a couple of things and then get back to it.

anyway, glad i found this board.

Here is a story counter to the general opinion:

I had a friend who was extremely hungover, as in puking between holes. He normally shoots around 90 when he plays. This day he shot a 79, his best round ever. He swears it was because all he wanted to do was hit the ball and get back in the cart and hit it as few times as possible.

I definitely play better fully rested and awake, but I won't not play because i am tired or sleepy. I may choose to ride instead of walk if i'm really tired, but I'll still play if I've previously planned to. I might not play my best round, might even play towards my worst round, but I'm still on the golf course having a good time, which is better than many alternatives.

Speaking of hangovers. The worst part about playing hung over is listening to the sound of some drivers as they "ping" and make you ears ring. That alone is enough to make anyone suicidal.

Im just going to add something. If I play when I feel sick I normally do fairly well. I usually shoot high 90's when im sick. I just find that each shot is more realxed and you dont care so much about the distance.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.

At age 15 to be as accomplished as he is makes me think we may be seeing a future star.  A story of him breaking out may help reinvigorate golf viewership. • Day 8: Indoor backswing work, mostly rehearsals of takeaway. Hit some balls wtih 6-iron working on adding flow, but not too Much which I tend to do, swaying too far away from target.
    • Day 55: 4/18/2024 Got to the range again today. Planned to do my priority pieces and then hit targets with irons. But after my priority pieces I hit a few drives and tugged them all hard left. .... Uh... oh boy.  So, I spent about a half hour trying to hit targets at the range with my driver.
