I agree with the combination of a couple of the options.

Combining Xmas and Birthday is always a good one and means there only has to be a token offering when the birthday comes around to compensate for the demise of the economy into the future.
Something I did before my current set was get some quality heads and then good shafts from the net and get your pro to fit them together. I got taylor TP combo heads and nippon shafts for about $400 or so which were perfect game developers.
Another more difficult way to manage it would be to get a new club each time you broke your handicap in competition. That way your mum knows you are putting them to good use and she will probably be able to stretch it out for the duration until your birthday is up too?
