I play a Superquad with a UST Proforce V2 77 g shaft. The club was not properly fit for me and I tend to balloon it more now than ever.

I'm just wondering whether I should get fitted for a shaft to put into my clubhead, or get fitted for a new clubhead and shaft? Basically, should I put in a new and better fitting shaft or buy a new driver and shaft entirely?

Try different shafts before you go ahead and make a purchase of a new head. Most likely that will do the trick. You just may need a shaft with a different kick point of different weight.

I agree.

Try some, shafts can make a club from unplayable to the club of your dreams.

Good luck!!

Is there that much difference between a shaft fitting and a head/shaft fitting? It seems like you should be able to say that you would prefer to reshaft (as it should be cheaper) but if he finds that the head just doesn't work for you I'm sure he will say this.

BTW, what did you play before this driver, which you got better results with? Also, did you have the loft measured on the head you have? Unless you got fitted with the exact head that you bought there might be considerable difference.

You don't say what shaft flex. That can also contribute.

Too stiff flex or incorrect kick point for your swing could do it.

And if you can play with the weights?.....

I played a Maxfli A10 10.5* driver with a Harrison Striper shaft S flex. I hit it higher than the Superquad. That's why I went to a 9.5*. The SQuad is way more accurate and a few yards longer.

It's a stiff flex. Plus, it's a heavy shaft. And it's supposed to be a midlaunch shaft. It should produce a lower flight than it does.

I messed with the weights, but I didn't see much difference. I think it's my swing. I would still like to get fitted, though.

I believe if you look on the Titleist web site you'll see that the UST shafts are higher launching shafts to begin with. I would get properly fit for a new shaft.

try a diamana white board stiff or x stiff get fit but it will launch lower and less spin therefore less balloning

I always thought that it was the shaft that determined the ball flight BUT after some testing I realized that this is not always the case. I have tried same shaft (PL Red) on G10, MP-600 and 909D2 all equal length and features and it turned out that G10 launched the highest, 909D2 second and MP-600 the lowest. G10 had 9*, 909D2 and MP-600 had 9.5*. This is just to illustrate that both shaft and the head plays a roll in launch and spin rates.

But in your case, I would just go and try fitting with different shafts and only after that if you still can't find the optimal combination I would look for new a new head/shaft combo. But it could also be your swing so might want to check on that as well. Hope this helps.

    • I think it’s more about conservation of angular momentum. If the hands didn’t slow down you wouldn’t release it and the clubhead would barely be moving faster than the hands. The hands start pulling up and back as you near impact, which makes the club rotate around its own CoM as well as rotating around the system, which makes it move faster, which as you noted is the idea.    You can watch all this happen if you find a YouTube video of a pro golfer face on and go frame by frame you can measure on your screen how far each piece moves per frame. As those distances change that’s acceleration and deceleration. You’ll see the hands slowing down and the clubhead speeding up
    • I see, so it must have to do with the shaft being flexible and bending as you swing it.
    • The hands have to slow down to get maximum club head speed at impact. They are essentially braking to crack the whip so to speak.
