Here is what I USED to have:

Driver: $400

3-Wood: Free (won at a tournament)

Irons: 3-SW ($6,000--yes that is 3 zero's, actually it was a gift to my dad who did not want it so I played with it a few years--it was 4-star top of the line Honma)

Putter: Free (won at a tournament)

I replaced the irons with Mizuno MP-68 because Honma irons--while great--was a little to light for me.

My current set:

Everything is same, except for

Irons (3 to PW): $900

3-Wedges: $330

Total: $1630

Nothing wrong with the Acuity wedges.  I gave my Acuity Gap Wedge to my brother (a pretty decent player who breaks 80 on occasion) and it's his favorite wedge/club in the bag.  He's got a Vokey LW and a MacGregor MT Pro-M PW and he hardly ever hits them, just prefers the grind and heavy feel of the Acuity wedge.

It's  a great wedge, no doubt. I've been hitting it pretty solidly lately. I just don't like the weight of it. I feel like I have to really limit my swing so I don't over-shoot it. Just a preference thing.

When I originally bought my set about 15-20 years ago, I think the full set ran about $2,000.  Back then I purchased a full set of Callaway War Bird irons 3-PW, SW, AW, LW.  I started the replacement of my old set with a Callaway Heaven Wood (7).  Then I bought a 3 Wood, then a driver then a 5 Wood.  I think I bought the irons in between the 3 & 5 woods.

Three years ago I replaced my driver with a Diablo 406cc driver.  That ran around $200.  I later bought a new 3 & 7 wood (Diablo) for about $150 each.  I also bought an Odyssey putter for around $100.  With my irons, I just replaced the grips with factory grips that I did myself.

I know that totals up to 16 clubs but I dropped the 5 wood completely and usually take the 7 wood over the 3 iron.  I've been looking at hybrid irons but can't afford them right now.

I replaced 12 of 14 clubs this year. The 7 & 9 woods are from my older bag.

TM R11 driver (used) $100

Ping G15 4 wood (used) $99

Callaway Steelhead Plus 7 & 9 woods (used $15 each) $30

Ping G15 irons 5 through gap wedge (new) $300

Callaway sand wedge (new) $100

Titleist lob wedge (used) $50

Ping B60 putter (new) $65

Total $744

Not too bad considering I've got a really solid set that I'm very happy with. Now if I had to replace them and pay retail I would have to cough up $1797.00

Then there is the cost of bags, balls, tees, gloves, shoes, spikes, grips, shag bags, training aids, push carts, umbrellas, clothing, gps, towels, etc, etc, etc. Damn this is an expensive sport!

Second post here, but I've been reading this site for a while.  My bag is my most cherished possession so no dollar amount would do, but in the real world here's what I paid:

Nike SQ Dyno 9.5 Driver      $50 on eBay

Maxfli Black 3 Wood          ~$30 from my starter set

Nike ProCombo Irons 3-P     $520 on eBay

Nike SV 52/56/60 Wedges    $0 gift from best friend

Scotty California Monterey    $0 gift from best friend

Nike Cart Bag                      $140 from Dicks Sporting Goods

So about $740....not too bad considered it'd cost me over $2,000 retail.

I bought my club's demo model. I has a nice fat skymark on it but the white paint hides it fairly well.

    • Day 534, April 18, 2024 Practice before lessons today. Priority piece. No sim this time. 🙂
    • I’ve recently started KBs too and really enjoy it. I have one day of armour building complex and one day of a mobility routine. Adding in a speed training day too.    which routines do you do @Elmer
    • Again, I’m not an expert so take it with a grain of salt My question is whether laying back even further becomes too conservative and that strategy is suboptimal as a result? Essentially what’s the cost of guaranteed longer second shot vs the x% risk for hitting the bunker? I think the optimal way to answer the question is looking at strokes gained, in consideration of the hazards and penalties, and picking the strategy that maximizes SG off the tee. I’ve seen some apps that do this but I’m not sure how accurate they are.   And again, asking all this so I can learn what I should be doing in these situations rather than questioning your approach Bill. I would give an example of the course I’m joining this year where I plan to aim at the bunker, but I don’t want to take over your swing thread any further!
    • What @DeadMan said. From the satellite it looks like there's tall grass to the right, long of the fairway post-dog-leg. But left it just looks like regular rough all the way to the neighboring tee boxes. If that's true I'm aiming left edge of the green and bombs away every time, hoping for a 30-70 yard up and down opportunity.
    • What's the case against blasting a driver at the green? I'm guessing it puts the penalty area/fescue too much into play, but if that's just standard rough around the green, there would be a good case for it. If it's not driver, then I agree with your approach. The one thing I would add is to shade your aim towards the bunkers vs. center of the fairway. Hitting out of a bunker is (marginally) better than a penalty drop.
