I just watched the 2000 PGA Championship playoff where Bob May gifted the win to Tiger.

How? You call making 3 pars gifting the PGA  to Tiger? Tiger had to scramble for his 2 pars. But the birdie he made on 16. No he went and got that one... literally.

Better get your facetious meter re-calibrated. 😉 This was a take off on the silly idea that DeMarco gifted the 2005 Masters to Tiger.  😄

DiMarco totally gifted the ‘05 Masters to Tiger... on the second nine of the third round Sunday morning... and yeah that chip on the 72nd hole so should have went in. 😀

LOL

The whole field gifted Tiger the 2000 US Open and then did it again at the 2000 British Open.

Yep. Jack was never so lucky to be gifted a major. Those club pros gave him their best every tournament in the early years!

In every sport better training technologies and more participation has resulted in much better athletes.  In sports that performance can be measured athletes today are miles ahead. I don't see why golf is any difference. Golf is much more competitive now compared to the 70s and 80s. Tiger is much better than Jack.

I agree. I think people forget that fact. It’s not a slam or derogatory to Jack. It’s just the way it is. The fields today are vastly more difficult every generation..hell, every year. If a guy ran a mile in 4min around an asphalt track compared to a guy who ran it in 5min but with hills, mud, water …the Jack side would say the better runner is the 4min. They completely disregard the important factors on the accomplishment.

15>18. Easily.

I am not sure that I have this right but am pretty certain that at the height of his powers, say 2000, the difference between Tiger and  #2 in the OWGR  was greater than the difference between #2  and #200 in the OWGR.

Week 50 2000

1. Tiger 1323 points

2. Els 617 points

199. Beem 51 points

I just caught a clip of Justin Leonard talking about the Slam.  I haven't verified any of the numbers, but he said Tiger was 71 shots ahead of him in the Slam majors.  Then they said that Leonard had the second fewest bogies in those 4 events with 41.  Of course, Tiger was best with on 23 bogies.  In 291 holes.  On major championship difficult courses.  In the 2 Opens he finished a combined 23 strokes in the lead.

There is no one statistic that can measure this extraordinary achievement.  The only things I can think of that can even be spoken of in the same breath are Secretariat's Triple Crown run and Raphael Nadal's absolute dominance at Roland Garros.

And Jack winning 18 majors. 🥴. Yeah…party’s over. Jack is maybe a close second to Tiger and that’s being real gracious to Jack.

Real gracious how? Tiger is clearly the GOAT, but who has a legit/strong case over Nicklaus as #2? And why?

I meant ‘close’ second as being gracious.

No one yet...

If 82x > 73y, giving Tiger first, and I think a clear first. Still, you would need someone from this generation to win probably 60 PGA tour wins, and about 12 majors or so. I think that person has a case to say they could challenge 2nd place.

No one in the past has the number of wins. Maybe if Sneed had like 100+ wins and 14+ majors.

He meant it was gracious to say Jack is a close second when he really is about as close as Els & Jimenex were at the 2000 US Open.

As to who has a case to be above Jack?  Ben Hogan.

I think Tiger has an unimpeachable claim to # 2.

If you really let go of the nostalgia and personal ‘likes/dislikes’ of the matter..it’s actually laughable to think Jack is greater than Tiger when using the stats/numbers and facts.

Exactly. We’ve almost got to the point where people leave Walter Hagen and Sam Snead out of these conversations. I think it’s about trying to present yourself as a  someone unconvinced by fads - like the idea that a spring chicken like Tiger could possibly be as good as someone who competed against 20 amateurs a century ago.

    • Yup, sorry, not my rules, but rules are rules.
    • Ok, so going to get this posted, out in the world.  I haven't posted as much because of work life balance being s*** right now. I have this project in NJ (sorry @billchao, but NJ is a giant pain in the a** 😉) that is just sapped all my motivation for most anything else. My bowling league started up, so that is taking more focus.  I plan to start working out again, again NJ project, since I haven't worked out consistently in like 6 months. I also will start practicing golf again here soon. Time to get some indoor work done, and the golf course near me has a trackman you can rent out. So, I plan to hit some over the winter as well.
    • Yep, I think the biggest issue is the carbon fiber.  Carbon fiber is not good for high impact due to it being brittle, and there can be catastrophic failures. If you consider something like bicycles, where the frame can be carbon fiber, but they usually have a beefy suspension system to take the shock. Carbon fiber is good in tension, not compression. It is bad in compression. It makes no sense to have a carbon fiber golf club that is subjected to both tension and compression on a golf strike, especially off-center hits.  Ping is using carbon fiber on top of the club at the back half of the crown to lower spin. It is probably in a place that wouldn't see much of the compression/tension from a mishit. Also, the bottom half of the club is metal. So, it is pretty rigid.  The Paradym Drivers have like 80% of their club as carbon fiber. The back weight distribution design is not connected, by metal, to the front part of the club. I can see if you mishit it, and that 20% metal starts to twist, it will create a section of the carbon fiber under compression, and it will crack.   Also, here is the tech description from Callaway on their newest driver... "The 360° Carbon Chassis has been refined to promote increased weight distribution. By adding an internal titanium support structure, the Carbon Chassis is now 15% lighter*. This mass is redistributed into the head to improve launch conditions and add forgiveness. Each Forged Carbon sole features a unique color and carbon pattern, making every piece one-of-a-kind." This sounds to me like they saw a large number of failures and added better material for more support, but they framed in a way to sell the club. 🤣
