Jack vs. Tiger: Who's the Greatest Golfer?

Even though I wasn't able to live in Jack's prime, I reallly believe he will is the best golfer ever. People say Tiger is a better athlete, but get this, Jack Nicklaus was offered a scholarship to play football at Ohio St. Only after talking to then coach Woody Paige (yes the same Woody Page you can see on ESPN), did Jack begin concentrating solely on football. With Tiger's discipline, I believe he could have been very good at almost anything he set his mind to. But to be recruited by a college as OSU? I don't know.

Please check your facts. Jack's father asked Woody Hayes to check out his son's football prowess in high school. Woody told Charlie to have the kid concentrate on golf. Yes, Jack also played basketball in high school.

Tiger still has a very long way to go to surpass Jack's record. Another 10 years on the tour and then we'll see.

As a long-time Jack guy, I was really impressed by Paul Goydos comments this week.
He showed more than respect for Mr. E. "Tiger" Woods.

His description of how much better Tiger is than everybody else was great.
I never heard any pro talk about another pro like that.
I think he predicted 125 tour wins and 25 majors.

Oh, I have a new guy I root for in the Tiger-free zones.

That's too bad. A discussion involving Tiger Woods is way more relevant than any with either of those two. Especially Duval.

I was alive during Jack's time, but was pretty young. I also wasn't very into golf...

It was a tough decision but I voted for Tiger. Barring injury (knee) or burnout (his hot wife), I'm sure that he will eventually surpass Jack in all catagories.

I wish that Bobby Jones was mentioned more in this type of disussion. 13 majors by the time he was 28!!

And Tiger had 12 before he turned 28 (you've gotta count the U.S. Ams for him too), nine of which came against competition I think you'd call "stiffer" than Jones faced, too.

I chose Tiger because I think he is a better athlete overall, and I think the competition now is greater and Tiger is miles ahead of everyone. I don't really think it is fair to compare the 2 because the game is so different now than it was then. Jack was a great golfer and the best of his time and so is Tiger, bottom line.

Tiger's better than Bobby Jones now too? Ha. Jones played phenomenal golf with sticks with essentially a garden spade lashed to them.

Tiget seems to be the new face of golf for the last few years and he's taking it to new levels but I don't really enjoy watching him play. Kind of like Jordan was in basketball - the man had unreal skills but I usually cheered for the other team.

I don't agree with many people's assertion that Jack had better competition. Golf has never been more competitive than it is today. The reason that Tiger doesn't have a Palmer or Watson is that he's so much better than all of the great, and I do mean great golfers out there today. It's harder than ever to win on the tour and Tiger does it consistently.
