I am looking for a solid iron that allows me room to improve but also some forgiveness. I am about a 17 hc now but hit my irons pretty solid (I tend to get into trouble off the tee). I want a thin top line, that is very important to me.

Looking at Ping I10, Cleveland CG7 (Tour?), Titleist AP2 but am very intrigued by the Nike VR Forged Split Cavity. Maybe the Bridgestone GC Mids?

Help!!! Thanks in advance.

Have you considered Mizuno MP-57 or MP-52? I started with mine at 23 handicap.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I like the CG7 Tour irons. I haven't heard anything bad about them really. Think that is what I'm going to do this summer when I get the money. I hit a few at Golf Galaxy a couple weeks ago and those things are sweeeeeet!
But it's ultimately up to you, hit a few and see which one fits your game the best.

I really like my Tour Preferreds. Got them when I was about a 20. Only now am I seeing are REALLY awesome they are that I'm starting to work the ball....

The only clubs I demo'd that really stood out to me aside from these. And if I wasn't TaylorMade biased I probably would've gotten were the Bridgestone J36... not the blades.... but I forget if it was the pocket cavity or the one in between.

On a side note: I think the TPs are pretty forgiving (at least for me as a 20hc) clubs from about the 5iron-PW. Not until recently am I really being able to take advantage of my 3 and 4 irons. (not sure how much of this is the +1" length clubs I'm playing, btw)

I got my 57s at 28hcp and am down to 22 and play best with those sticks (trouble with driver/hybrid).

i like the look of the mp52 which is what i think i am gonna get soon. they have a thin top line and quite a thick sole for a 'sorta players iron'

Why the need for a "thin" topline? How does that have any bearing on performance?

For me It affects my brain. When I look down at a thick topline I'm just not comfortable for some reason and my shots end up worse. I

want to play a more forgiving club and am trying but it's worse so far than my blades

Check out these irons - http://thesandtrap.com/clubs/nickent...o_irons_review

I know they're a few years old, but they're basically a player's cavity back - feels like a blade when struck properly but offers some forgiveness with minimal offset and a thin top line. Lower trajectory, but I prefer that anyway :)

You can probably find a brand new set online for $200, maybe less!

I guess I am lucky. I don't care what the club looks like in the bag or at address as long as the ball goes where it is supposed to.

I find I play better when I don't think too much. Like on the greens, read the put for 10 seconds and then go after the hole!

I totally agree w that. I really dont like it when I look down and see that fat topline. Similar to the reason I use a 425cc driver vs a 460cc driver.

thanks for the input from everyone. has anyone hit the new VRs from Nike?

I hit the full cavities. They were ok. I didn't hit them as well as I hit the X-22 or x-22 tours. I am getting new clubs at some point and am going with the X-22 with Proj X 5.5 shafts. Look into the Adams Idea pro golds. They have a nice thin topline and dicks is closing them out for $500.

If your looking for something to grow into, I'd go with a combo set of Adams Idea forged are nice and forgiving decently cheap and have a thin blade like topline and a couple hybrids.

I just splurged on a set of Ping G10s (I need a little dab of game-improvement) because of how pleasantly surprised I was with some demo clubs at the driving range. I'd definitely recommend the I10s for someone with more experience/consistency.

I just got back into golf this year after a 10 year layoff and I have the same mental problem with looking down at anything but a thin topline.

I bought the VR Forged set back in March and I have to say they're great.

Love my AP2s. Tried the VR splits recently at a Nike demo day and just did not like them compared to my AP2s. Not sure what it was, but they just didn't feel right...and I wanted to like them. Went back and fourth between my 6 iron and the Nike 6 iron and it was a very different feel.

Each to their own though.

In my Datrek Rage bag:
Driver: Sumo 5000 w/ Aldila VS Proto Stiff
4-Wood: SasQuatch 2 w/ Diamana Stiff
Irons: AP2 4-PW w/ PX 6.0
Wedges: Zodia US Spec 52*, Yururi Gekku 57*, 588 DSG RTG+Putter: Scotty Cameron Studio Style 3.5 or Odyssey White Hot Tour #1Ball: ProV1 or whatever I find!

    • However, have you ever considered using small summer houses for such setups? They offer a great solution for creating dedicated practice areas, especially for an affluent audience looking to enhance their outdoor living space.
    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
