Everyone is talking about Yang being the first Asian to win a major, but Tiger is actually more Asian than African American (1/4 Thai, 1/4 Chinese, 1/4 African American, 1/8 Dutch and 1/8 Native American, according to Wikipedia).

Since he is considered the first African American to win a major shouldn't he also be considered the first Asian? I'm not trying to start a race war I'm just saying its a bit of a double standard. Of course he was born and raised in Socal so not exactly a native born Asian but still, I don't really think Yang can be called the first Asian to win a major.

The thing I like about Tiger's perspective is that the acknowledges every part of his well-mixed background but will not claim one part to the exclusion of another.

This has nothing to do with how he plays golf, of course, but has social implications that interest some.

I never understood why we have to label someone as the "first" whatever to do something based on race or nationality. It's one thing to be the first person to do something period, but to then label it every time it's done by someone other then a white American male just promotes stereotypes and racism.

What the hell??? Tiger is an American who has a mix of many nationalities. He is NOT Asian! Yang is Asian and is the first male Asian to win a major. I guess with your reasoning Tiger was also the first native American to win a major.

You're totally missing the point. They aren't pointing on Yang's race per se. They're pointing out he's the first person from that region of the world to win a major. This is why it's important.

It shows the reach golf has now and world marketing potential. It is an indicator of how the game has grown. When someone from South Korea can win one of the largest tournaments in the game, it proves that golf isn't just a Western culture event any longer. Players from the USA, Canada, Europe, South Africa, Australia have had success for awhile now obviously, but they're all western culture.

The fact that players of Eastern culture and the fact that yes, he is of Asian race, is the entire point to why it's a big deal.

Plus the marketing drones are salivating at the potential of opening up a market over a billion large.

Yeah, that means he's from Asia. Asian-American would be someone of Asian decent but born in America. But yeah, they are referencing his race as well as his region...both go hand-in-hand. I think the really big thing is that it shows the global reach golf has had that people form that region are winning at the highest level now. Asians can compete at this level. That's pretty big.

Words take on polymorphic meanings and it is left to the reader to interpret them sometimes. English is a pain, lol.
