I've never really seen Sergio hit the ball that bad. Sergio is a good ballstriker but I don't pick out "the best" on Tour type of stuff.

If only he could putt though, he's putting is really horrendous. He's my favorite player, but it kills me to know he never makes a clutch five footer.

I agree.

Regardless of his mental lapses that cause him to struggle with the putter at some of the most inopportune times, he is certainly one of the best ball strikers in the world.

I think all the haters discard his solid game because of his personality. Even I will say..his poor attitude with whining excuses is as costly to his winning total as his mental game on the greens sometimes..

But he's a good guy, I met him at Muirfield Village and he is really friendly and funny. He's had a few bad breaks, and has even had a couple majors stolen away from him by other players that just got red hot on the back nine on Sunday. But its difficult for anyone to honestly say he's not one of the best ball strikers...

You dont think Sergio is a good ballstriker?

Not any more than a slightly better than average PGA Tour pro.

He got the reputation because he had a good GIR year once and it's stuck ever since. Additionally, since he has so much lag, he hits his 4I 240 on occasion and people think that is good ball-striking too. He's over-rated as a driver of the golf ball, too. But bear in mind he's over-rated partly because he's rated so highly. He might still be an 8 out of 10 as a driver, but people seem to think he's a 9.8 or something. Congratulations to Ryan Moore.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I like Ryan Moores hell who cares attitude. Glad to see him pull one off, and hope he wins many more.

Sergio is way overrated. What has he really done other than the WCG last year. Mined you I,m a Sergio fan but he is way overdue to living up to his potential.

Another intersting aspect of Moore's look is that it's logo-less. While he does have a glove and ball deal with Callaway, he is not currently endorsing clubs or other products that might require him to have patches or symbols on his hat, shirts or golf bag. Everything Moore is wearing these days—he says—has been paid for by him. Moore says he likes the logo-less look, but if he continues to play well, don't be surprised if a company or two don't try to buy their way into his graces.

Not any more than a slightly better than average PGA Tour pro.

Still, Sergio was first in scoring average last year with rather average putting stats, so he must be a very good "scoring" ball-striker?

Also Sergio (or maybe it was Paddy) said a while back that while Paddy is well-suited for short game, Sergio is naturally well-suited at long game, aka ballstriking.

I'm really glad for Ryan Moore and appreciate his beating to his own drum. I will say that after his first PGA tour win it wouldn't surprise me at all if some endorsement deals were soon to follow

Still, Sergio was first in scoring average last year

Exactly right. Garcia won the Vardon trophy for the best scoring average on the PGA Tour last year. Sergio is a great ballstriker and he's obviously doing something right to have won 7 times and the The Players (under 30). He just needs to stay positive and hold his confidence on the greens and he will keep getting his chances.

People also forget he was but 19 years old when he dueled with Tiger and came in 2nd in the PGA. He's just so talented and been on Tour for years, seems like hes been out there for ages. I think Ryan Moore's win will definitely get him a view logos on the threads...He's on the PING staff correct?

He's on the PING staff correct?

I heard on the Golfchannel to that the only thing he is paid for is for playing Callaways ball. He uses Adam driver/fairway woods and older Ping S59 irons, so not really a lot that Ping would pay him for.

I will say that after his first PGA tour win it wouldn't surprise me at all if some endorsement deals were soon to follow

Its not that he didnt had offers - as i read in an interview, it was his own choice to go without endorsements. You can read the interview here:

http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/article/127460 . Personally i think thats a good attitude, it shifts the focus onto winning instead of trying to milk the cow as long and hard as possible.

I think this whole FedEx cup thing is very lame, but I have a q.
According to the FedEx cup web site, the top 30 go into the final event which is the tour championship, at which point the points are re set. I assume this means that all 30 players start the tournament tied at zero. Then it would seem that whoever wins the tournament, wins the FedEx cup. But the promo material on the web site suggests that some players have a better chance of winning than others (I assume based on past performance through the playoffs).
But if all the points are reset then does not each of the 30 players have an equal chance of winning the cup i.e. whoever wins the tour champinoship wins the cup. I'm confused.

Glad to see Ryan Moore win, too. I believe he's got the game and now that he's not dealing with a nagging wrist injury he could make a huge push in the playoffs.

As for Sergio and his ballstriking:
Sergio ranks 97th in GIR (64.98%), 80th in Total Driving, and T127 in Putts/GIR.

Basically, at least this year, he is a VASTLY overrated "ball-striker" and a pathetic putter.

And yes, I'm NOT a Garcia fan.

    • Hi everybody!  I am new to the golf game. I have taken some lessons and got fitted for clubs a couple of months ago. I usually score between 110-120 for 18 holes.  I bought a Stealth driver last year and have been hitting consistently with it 210-230 yds on the simulator. But when I take it out on the course, every drive is a severe slice!  I played 18 holes yesterday at the club where I belong. I removed the driver from my bag and used the 5 iron to drive with. I hit straight 16 out of 18 drives, 180 - 200 yds. I used the 5i - putter for the rest of my game.  I ended the day with a 92. Question: Does it make sense for me to continue playing with irons only until I get further along in my game before I reintroduce the Driver and woods again? Or should I continue to struggle with the Driver and woods and shoot in the 100’s again? To me it’s a no brainer, but for those more advanced I am interested to get feedback.
    • Thank you, currently I only had the 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9 irons in the bag. I was never finding myself in a situation to use the 4 and 5 so I dropped those a while ago. The 60W is what I've been practicing with the most in the back yard, but that's only with short chipping. I don't think I've ever practiced hitting my wedges at 80% - 100% apart from yesterday. Maybe I should be doing that more. Generally I would be using a 9 iron if I was out about 75 yards or so. I am not really sure I understand your mention of the 60W and 3H. Aren't these going to be giving me completely different results? Unfortunately I am not able to adjust the loft on the hybrids I have. I looked into the Shot Scope H4 you suggested and this seems really neat and handy, however I am struggling to understand how it works. Am I correct in assuming it doesn't track the ball distance until you hit the ball a second time? Say I drive from the tee and walk up to my ball, tag the next club and hit the ball. Is it at this point when I tag my next club while standing next to my ball that is knows the distance? Thank you, I am going to give the local shop a call and check their prices and see what they can offer.
    • Do you know what their handicaps are? The handicap system isn't perfect and given the higher variance from higher handicaps, I think low handicap players would be expected to win maybe 60% of their matches? I'm not exactly sure what that number is and it will vary with the handicap difference, but if they're generally very low handicaps, then they might be at 60% likely to win a game. Given it's 16 vs 16, that's a lot of games to win. If it's 60%, then that's around an 80% chance that they'll win a given match. At 80% chance of winning, 21 wins in a row is about 1 in 108 times. Pretty unlikely, but not unheard of. It's pretty sensitive to what that individual win percentage is too. If it's 65%, then 21 wins is about 1 in 9. If it's 55%, then 21 wins is 1 in about 5,700. Clearly it's not as simple as this because that win likelihood is going to change match to match as they play lower handicap teams or higher handicap teams, but I don't think it's a "yes they're cheating" thing at all.
    • I'll be honest, the only reason the 2 iron was in my bag is because I tend to hit the ball into the tree's fairly often. And I was using it to help me keep the ball very low to get out of the tree's while avoiding getting much loft to hit branches. I guess I can drop the 3H as well. Would it be wise to give a higher loft fairway wood a try as well, something like a 26 degree? I believe there is only one golf shop where I live that has a golf simulator and trainer. I see they offer free fitting with a purchase from the fitter. I'll have to check how much they charge without a purchase, I've read a few stories about fitters on this forum that just wanted to sell the person the most expensive clubs and that kind of deters me a bit. They do offer lessons as well. I'll give them a call and ask them a bit more about these services. Thank you!
