Hi all,

Just thought I'd post up a more recent version of my swing and see what people think. Any comments/criticisms are welcome. All three shots were fairly well struck. The 3rd was slightly thin if I remember correctly.

Cheers,
James

Thanks mate. Mmm, you wouldn't think so till you see my short game, and that's where my attention is focused at the moment. I haven't handed in a card in a while, so that largely explains why its stuck where it is.

Typical miss depends on the day. If I'm swinging well then its usually a block. On a bad swinging day I can lunge at the ball and hit pulls/slices cause I get on top of it and leave the blade open.

ya looks better than most 17s. hell looks better than most single digits i play with. but full swing is not the most important thing i guess. only thing i could say is it is too long for my taste, and if you were a student i would shorten it up considerably, for consistency and control. theres a certain place where if i pause it it looks like a really really sound backswing, and then it keeps going to your real backswing and its way longer. just a thought

yep, shorten that swing and itll help the block. when your hands have longer to go with the club they get stuck tryin to catch up to your hips and leave it out to the right. try to just get the club to parallel where you can't see it out of your left periphreal vision. and the pull slice is just the opposite. u try to go at it hard so your hands get ahead. usually try to keep really goin after a ball down to once a round or so. hope this helps a little

From what I could tell, it looks real solid. What is your typical miss? I'm trying to put this swing together with a 17+hcp and it doesn't fit.

Haha, thats the exact thing i thought and as i was reading down before putting my post you said the exact same thing i was going to post. Unreal. Anyways from the looks of your swing it is pretty solid, the only thing i could see is your club face may be a little closed at impact resulting in a hook or a pull hook. I would have to see a side view to be sure. But does not look bad at all and was thinking you must not be that good at driving or putting if your a 17 handicapp. Keep up the good work and may all your balls fly straight.

Nice swing. Your take back on your back swing is a little inside producing a bit of a flatter swing. Upon impact I can see that your shoulders/hands move a little quicker, producing outside in pull/ pull slice effect. At impact it seems your hips are shoulders are aligned.

I have a similar problem with my swing, i'm slowly fixing my downswing to come down flatter for a inside out swing. Film a side view of you swing

Overall great swing bro, i can tell you can really wack the ball far!

OK that makes sense. The only thing I saw is that your right elbow gets trapped behind your hip coming down into impact. Same swing fault causes both the block and the hook- flip your hands through to catch up= hook/ keep hands passive=block.

There's plenty of drills on youtube you can search to find one that works for you. Good luck-

Great swing James. To reiterate some things is2linda and a few others touched on. . . The good: Smooth swing, great tempo and no extraneous movements, maintains spine angle. I really like the posture in the first swing and the position of the hands underneath the chin, in the last two swings you seem more bent over from the waist. The meh. . .not-so-good: 1. For an iron, the swing is a bit too long....past parallel? 2. On your takeaway the club travels inside the toe line too quickly and is no longer in front of your chest as the it reaches waist height. A bit too much roll of the forearms perhaps. As you come down into impact the club will get stuck. This is what causes your block and snap hook as your hands will eithersave it, over compensate or hit the block/push. I like a flatter swing though. It seems a flatter swing is what they are teaching nowadays. I admire your courage to put your swing online and have it scrutinized. . . it says a lot about your attitude towards golf. Keep up the good work James. Of the 3, which was your best swing? My guess would be the first. Hey, I'm a 23 handicap...what do I know? laughs.

    • Why does Rory struggle with consistency?
    • I would say it depends on how the 3W distance works with the length of the holes he is going to be playing. If there are par 4s around 430 for example I think he would be foolish not to carry a club that enabled him to get there in 2. Agree however that flexibility goes up drastically if not carrying putter and with the tournament several weeks away there is theoretically enough time to get comfortable with using a low lofted metalwood or bladed wedge. Really would be ideal to know the course to help strategize.
    • i would suggest a more lofted fairway wood or hybrid since a 3 wood needs a good lie to be hit off the fairway.  If you are in the rough or in a bad lie, then the 6 iron would be your only choice.  A 5 wood might be shorter but is more flexible and adaptable in the types of lies you can play it from.  The iron for me would be anything from a 6 to 8 iron depending on your comfort and distance.  The wedge you should consider whether you can play a slightly less lofted wedge, like a gap wedge maybe.  However, the less loft you have the more skill you need in playing different shots.  Hitting a sand wedge is easier but it does mean most of your shots around and close to the green will be high lofted shots. The putter is the one club where I question whether you truly need it.  If you can putt with something like the wood/hybrid in your bag, that gives you far greater options and flexibility.  However, it would need practice since we rarely putt with any other club. In my case a 4 club choice would be 4 hybrid, 7 iron, PW and SW/LW depending on course conditions.  I would putt with the hybrid and use that for most tee shots.  On my home course, there are maybe two holes where I couldn't reach a green in regulation with those clubs.   Essentially long par 4's where I need to hit driver off the tee.
    • Are the 512 replies to this topic about Rory being overrated or has this become a Rory Catch all topic? If the latter, the topic title should maybe reflect it. Good to see him win again. His first since 2019. 2020 wasn’t his best year and an up-and-down 2021 so far with missing the cut one week and being top 10 the next.  But that has been Rory all along and maybe what spurred this topic: his inconsistent performance. One week he’s hitting it as well as anyone has and the next he’s out of it and struggling. His talent is undeniable, but inconsistency is keeping him down.
    • I'm not an expert but the swing in the video seemed like you did not bring the upper body around quickly enough. Is it possible your focus on not firing the shoulder right away is causing too much lag there? Swing is about tempo so too slow can be an error just like too fast.
