I just hit the MP58 and 2008 AP2 both with PX 5.5. All I can say is WOW. Both of these irons felt amazing. The MP58 felt a little bit more buttery but the AP2 still felt great as well. The top line of the MP58 was a little thinner and looked a little bit better at address.

Why not get an iron suited to your GAME, not an iron that will hinder your mishits.

What I Play:
Wilson Mini Stand Bag | PING G10, 10.5°, Proforce V2 HL S | PING G5, 15°, 18°, Aldila NV 75 S | PING G5, 19°, Aldila VS Proto By You 80 S
Mizuno MX200 4-PW S | Ping Tour W 50/12 X | Ping Tour W 58/TS X | A selection of putters, all 35.5 inches.

I agree 100% with this post. "Players" irons will always be there and I wouldn't rush in to buy something over your head. I've heard the 57's and 58's are forgiving enough for a 12 Hcp or so..... However a friend of mine, a legit single digit Hcp, got rid of 57's because they would punish him severely on distance with mishits. You should be looking at the AP1's.......

I don't think either club is over my head. I can hit either fine. Yes I might make mis hits once in a while but that just means I need to practice some more. For whatever reason I hit the GI irons about the same if not a little worse.

I would say go ahead and get what you want. You have the itch, it won't go away. I do the same thing. I have my eye on the new Titleist CBs coming out. Beautiful club, but know they are beyond my current ability to hit them consistently.

Those are some beautiful clubs. If you have enough time to dedicate to practice I say you should get them.

As for me, I think I'm going to get the AP2. It will be more forgiving on mishits and it is cheaper. If I really want it, I can trade in for or get the MP58 later.

My advice? Take your money and use it to buy some lessons. Your clubs are not whats causeing your 27 handicap, its your swing. Hate to sound like a jerk but its true.

I agree with this post. Why punish yourself on mishits with a players iron? When you could just get a set of game improvers which HELP your game. It is just new club confidence making you hit the ball good 95% of the time, and that confidence will soon wear off when you hit some shots 50 yards off the toe.

Ok I was lazy and didn't change my handicap but just to clear it up I've edited it. I know you're not trying to be rude. Your input is appreciated. My money is spent on lessons. I have one almost weekly and practice anywhere from 1-5 times a week. My iron play is the best part of my game. My 100 yards in, including putting is also pretty good. It is my woods that kill me the most. My driver could also be better but I'm working on both of those.

Hi danieldsuh.
I play off single figures (UK) ordered myself a set of MP58s, now thinking bout changing them! Fine when you strike them good but when your just off you get very little back. I am thinking more like Mx300s, we dont need to make the game any harder for ourselves! Good luck in your search.

Really good advice, but there is simply no convincing most people on this board once they decide they want blades or player's cavity backs. I'm sure the AP2s will work, but there is no reason an 18 handicap shouldn't play the AP1s. You can learn to hit the sweet spot with cavity backs, but not be punished so severely for your mishits.

Either way, I'd go with the AP2s if they're that much cheaper.

The reason is that I hit the AP2's better then the AP1. I also hit the TM Tour Preferred better then the Burners. For whatever reason I just strike the ball better when I'm not hitting a GI iron with a big sole.

Hey-then more power to you, my mistake for lumping you in with the crowd that thinks 20 cappers should play blades cause it will really improve their ballstriking, or those that say their ballstriking is superb but other issues are adding 10-15 strokes to their index (cause I don't buy that argument). If you hit both sets and are genuinely better with one then that is the one to choose. The AP2s are great clubs, I've got a set of 775s that slot somewhere in between the AP1s and AP2s in terms of forgiveness and size, though I'd check out the 710 series AP1s in a few weeks if you can, allegedly they are significantly improved.

Well my ballstriking isn't superb but its not bad at all. Of course there are times when I'm off but not anything major enough to make me want to shy away from a player's iron. Even if I only hit 5 out of 10 swings really well, it makes those 5 well struck shots that much more enjoyable for me. Having that feeling of hitting it really well and working to improve on the bad shots is what I enjoy about golf. Plus my misses aren't so bad that I'm severely penalized for them. Having said that, I do agree that I shouldn't punish myself TO much so I'm leaning more toward the AP2 for that little bit of extra forgiveness. Hitting these I still feel that great sensation when hitting a really good shot but enough feedback to let me know when I could've made a better swing. Thanks for the input everyone. I still haven't made up my mind yet but I am leaning more toward the AP2.

Speaking the truth. I thought just like alot of people on this forum last year. Went out an bought the MP 60 irons (great deal), thought I could be a real player. In one year my index went up 3 points. I was coming up 20 yards short on not so bad of strikes (not fat or thin, a bit towards the toe) and not able to make pars. I didn't break 80 all year this year (did it 3 times the year before). Anyway, I just got the Titleist 775s and it is so much better for me. I am a full club longer, hit them higher, mishits are on the front of the green. My index went down .5 after just two rounds.

I know I sound like a broken record about this but the truth is unforgiving irons will hurt most players.

I'll add a brief personal anecdote. I don't get a chance to play all that often, and while I have a high handicap, I have developed enough skills to now strike my irons well and make solid contact most of the time. It is mostly my accuracy that needs to improve. Anyway, I recently had a chance to pick up some used MP-57 irons cheaply, and figured I'd give it a shot. They came with the Exsar IS2 Tour Spec Graphite in stiff flex.

I took the MP-57 irons to the range with me the other day, together with my Big Bertha 2006 irons. To be blunt, I was shocked at how little distance I was getting with the MP-57s. I am sure it had most to do with the fact that I am just not ready to move to an iron like the MP-57, but it also could have been the shaft (to be honest, the Tour Spec graphite stiff was very stiff, maybe too stiff for me). To get any viable distance, I really had to strike it perfectly. Anything else just did not carry. The bottom line for me was that it was a good experiment, but it proved that I should be using a more forgiving iron than the MP-57.

The interesting thing was that going back and forth over the course of about 120 balls, my Big Berthas were looking more and more clunky and chunky as the session wore on. Man, those MP-57s were beautiful to look at. The "shovel" moniker for many of the GI and SGI irons really does have some truth to it. But for me, I probably should just keep playing my Big Berthas for awhile, as despite their chunkiness, they really are nice irons to hit. And if I do get the urge to switch, I will forego the tougher irons and likely go with the MX-200's from Mizuno, which I also demo'd and found very enjoyable to hit and to be a great blend (visually and playable). For me, there is simply no reason to make this game tougher than it needs to be.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
