Michelle Wie Breaks Through

Michelle Wie has won her very first LPGA Event, the Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Guadalajara, Mexico. She held on to take a two-stroke victory over Paula Creamer.

Congratulations to the 20 year old Wie. It was her 81st professional tournament and her 65th event on the LPGA Tour.

I'm glad to hear it, big congrats to Michelle. The LPGA needs people like her, Creamer, Pressel, Gulbis, and Co. to step it up and be win some tournaments, and become the faces of their respective Tour. Here's hoping this win is the first in a long line of victories.

She's been kind of hard to warm up to mainly because of her parents, but she seems to be on the right track now. I am happy for her and the LPGA tour needs somebody like her to step into the 'star' role. That remains to be seen but this win will take a lot of pressure off her.

that's exactly the point. in a squirrely lie with 220 and a one shot lead, there is no way, she should be taking out a hybrid. She is breaking bogey into play for no reason. She should hit a wedge to her preferred distance and then knock one on the middle of the green.

Credit to her that she hit a great bunker shot, but if she would have ended up with a nasty lie, everyone would be all over her.

Sure there is. First of all, the lie wasn't squirrelly. They described it as "sitting right up on a tuft of grass." Pretty much the perfect lie to hit a fairway wood.

Furthermore, what was she supposed to do - hit two pitching wedges? Why? you can shank one of those or dump one in a bunker. Better to get near the green, chunk it on anywhere, take your two putts, and get out of there. I'm a good player. I'd have done just that. She's several orders of magnitude (or more) better than me.

No, because all she'd have had to do was chunk it out anywhere on the green.

Fairway wood - particularly from that lie - was the safer play.
