Then why is it that its always recommended to be to up at parallel??

You've also seen it recommended everywhere that the ball starts on the line of the swing path. Doesn't mean it's right.

http://thesandtrap.com/forum/threads...e-to-the-Plane You roll the club more than most people I've ever seen - you need to feel like the club face is almost pointing straight down at the ground as if you counter-rotated it. "Toe up" is a cousin of "flip the club way behind your hands."

LOL, thanks Erik, I actually like the feeling of the clubhead being a little closed when I get to parallel on the backswing. I just wanted to make sure this was right. Thanks for the link btw. I NEED to stop rolling that face so open!!

Hope I can work on it tomorrow and post up a vid or 2!

Erik, quick question, does this same concept (feel like Im counter rotating) apply to short chip shots as well?? Or is there a different technique with that??

It depends. Some people only over-rotate on full swings. Most people probably don't, but I don't want to say definitively without video. I'd try to keep the club square to the arc as long as possible with every swing - from a putt to a driver.

Thank you for all the information in this thread.

I realized a few days ago after reading through this thread that I also was moving my hands out on the takeaway.

So I spent the last 3 or 4 days in my office during downtime working on keeping my hands on plane(it almost felt like I was moving them inside). Yesterday I decided to test this at the range and started off hitting balls at about a 1/4 speed to be sure i was taking my hands away properly and it felt as though i had a brand new swing.

The last 10 or so balls I tried the new swing at full speed and 9 out of the 10 balls were straight and on a rope. With my 6 iron i was hitting about 170 when last season my 6 iron was traveling about 158. The biggest thing was I was much more consistent with my swing.

So again thanks for all the advice. Now back to practice swinging at 1/2 speed in my office to embed this process into my head.

Hey guys, long time since I've been on here.

I cant get my body to start the downswing and the hands to lag behind to hold the angle.  I've tried and tried, any suggestions would be great!  I can't take a vid of my swing unless I can find someone to hit the range with me.  I'm pretty sure I'm still casting too.

Any tips/techniques that can have me lagging the clubhead to get solid contact and good clubhead speed?

I have some really old videos of my swing, it pretty much looks the same nowadays.  the only thing that's really changed is better tempo and I don't bring the club inside immediately anymore.  Thankfully the takeaway part of my swing is on point :)

Old vid but it's all I've got right now!

I'll try to get some video of my swing today.  I'll see if I can get my iphone to setup on my golf bag somehow to take video....

Hopefully Erik is still hanging around these parts!  I'm out in CO now and would like to continue to play better.  The ball goes a mile out here!  When I really get on the ball the drives go between 280-310 and the yardages are easily a club and a half to two clubs longer on the irons.  I can only imagine how fun it would be if I swing correctly!  I took a year off the game when moving here, but got back into it again this year.  Haven't played much and haven't had a handicap since moving here.  Next season I plan on re doing my handicap.  Most rounds I play now are twilight and I usually only get 7-10 holes in....

Still here! Good to see you back! I hope all is well. I'd love to play in CO to see how far the ball goes! :) Looking forward to the updated video.

P.S. Mike's now a partial owner as well, and any advice from him should be regarded highly as well.

Awesome Erik, good to hear from you man!  If you ever make it out to the Denver/Boulder area let me know.  You'll be amazed at how far you hit out here LOL!  I got grouped with a couple really good golfers and gps'd their drives.  320 was their shortest and 360 was their longest.  It's unreal.  I guess it's the thin air and lack of humidity.

So I took some video using Ubersense golf and watched the video for a good 2 hours.  I think I know what's going on as you had mentioned this before.  My ass moves towards the ball on the downswing.  So no matter how my takeaway looks, even if it's perfect, I'm screwed when I start moving towards the ball....

Did some rehearsal swings yesterday in the apartment where I'm pushing off the inside of my right foot and turning my hips instead of moving toward the ball... It looked and felt really good.  I'll try and hit some balls tomorrow with a super slow swing and record it so I can post it here.   Why is my natural tendency to move my ass toward the ball?  I'm not standing too far away am I?

Looking forward to being a "player" next season!

OK I got a vid of my swing.  The backswing problem has been taken care of thankfully.... hitting the ball fairly well but I seem to let go of the angle right when i get to my right thigh.... I dunno, what do you guys think.  I don't know how to upload a slow-mo vid.  This was remotely uploaded from the iphone, so it looks like crap.  I'll have to get it into my computer later to upload an HD version.  Anyways, what needs work here?

Nothin guys?  Looking to go to the range on lunch break today, any pointers would be great!  :)  I tried the bucket on the inside of the right leg, but these buckets here are tiny and I can't get them to rest on the leg so it moves correctly.....  any other tips on not being steep?  It looks like I'm releasing the club head just ms before impact.  I need to hold it just a touch longer but not sure how.   I think I'm on plane most of the downswing now until the very last second.  I think it's because I'm STILL moving towards the ball on the downswing and have to compensate for it... I dunno.  What do you guys think?

Sorry, I was out all day and busier than normal this weekend.

Turn your hips and torso more. Do this by stretching the right side more. Extend the knee, hip socket, etc.

Erik,

No worries, thanks for writing back on this.  I 'feel' like I'm turning good in the shoulders, never really thought about the hips and torso turning even more on the backswing.  I'll work on that next.  Do you think that will correct my ass moving towards the ball?

Thanks for the insight and thanks for getting my takeaway in check, it's helped a TON with the ball striking.  Pars are becoming more common now LOL!  Too bad the season is almost done out here.  One thing I miss about Tampa, year round golf!

    • Hi everybody!  I am new to the golf game. I have taken some lessons and got fitted for clubs a couple of months ago. I usually score between 110-120 for 18 holes.  I bought a Stealth driver last year and have been hitting consistently with it 210-230 yds on the simulator. But when I take it out on the course, every drive is a severe slice!  I played 18 holes yesterday at the club where I belong. I removed the driver from my bag and used the 5 iron to drive with. I hit straight 16 out of 18 drives, 180 - 200 yds. I used the 5i - putter for the rest of my game.  I ended the day with a 92. Question: Does it make sense for me to continue playing with irons only until I get further along in my game before I reintroduce the Driver and woods again? Or should I continue to struggle with the Driver and woods and shoot in the 100’s again? To me it’s a no brainer, but for those more advanced I am interested to get feedback.
    • Thank you, currently I only had the 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9 irons in the bag. I was never finding myself in a situation to use the 4 and 5 so I dropped those a while ago. The 60W is what I've been practicing with the most in the back yard, but that's only with short chipping. I don't think I've ever practiced hitting my wedges at 80% - 100% apart from yesterday. Maybe I should be doing that more. Generally I would be using a 9 iron if I was out about 75 yards or so. I am not really sure I understand your mention of the 60W and 3H. Aren't these going to be giving me completely different results? Unfortunately I am not able to adjust the loft on the hybrids I have. I looked into the Shot Scope H4 you suggested and this seems really neat and handy, however I am struggling to understand how it works. Am I correct in assuming it doesn't track the ball distance until you hit the ball a second time? Say I drive from the tee and walk up to my ball, tag the next club and hit the ball. Is it at this point when I tag my next club while standing next to my ball that is knows the distance? Thank you, I am going to give the local shop a call and check their prices and see what they can offer.
    • Do you know what their handicaps are? The handicap system isn't perfect and given the higher variance from higher handicaps, I think low handicap players would be expected to win maybe 60% of their matches? I'm not exactly sure what that number is and it will vary with the handicap difference, but if they're generally very low handicaps, then they might be at 60% likely to win a game. Given it's 16 vs 16, that's a lot of games to win. If it's 60%, then that's around an 80% chance that they'll win a given match. At 80% chance of winning, 21 wins in a row is about 1 in 108 times. Pretty unlikely, but not unheard of. It's pretty sensitive to what that individual win percentage is too. If it's 65%, then 21 wins is about 1 in 9. If it's 55%, then 21 wins is 1 in about 5,700. Clearly it's not as simple as this because that win likelihood is going to change match to match as they play lower handicap teams or higher handicap teams, but I don't think it's a "yes they're cheating" thing at all.
    • I'll be honest, the only reason the 2 iron was in my bag is because I tend to hit the ball into the tree's fairly often. And I was using it to help me keep the ball very low to get out of the tree's while avoiding getting much loft to hit branches. I guess I can drop the 3H as well. Would it be wise to give a higher loft fairway wood a try as well, something like a 26 degree? I believe there is only one golf shop where I live that has a golf simulator and trainer. I see they offer free fitting with a purchase from the fitter. I'll have to check how much they charge without a purchase, I've read a few stories about fitters on this forum that just wanted to sell the person the most expensive clubs and that kind of deters me a bit. They do offer lessons as well. I'll give them a call and ask them a bit more about these services. Thank you!
