This is the place for your thoughts on the AT&T.;

Looks like David Duval might have his annual top 10 here this year -- he's six under through 14 and tied for the lead. Or might he fade away quietly after a good first round for the second straight week?

at this point...we can all agree his pants are the only under-par thing about John Daly's game...oh no wait...his irons, wedges, putts, drives...certainly not his scores tho lol

I heard on the broadcast today that Kenny G is a scratch golfer. Kind of hard to believe from what I saw. Nice swing an all but I saw several wayward shots and his short game from around the greens looked weak. But playing on tv might have something to do with it too.

Do you know how difficult PGA tour courses are? The

average tour player has a +5 handicap. The rough is much higher, the courses are much longer, and the greens are firm and very fast. These guys are the best on the planet, bar none. Even scratch golfers look like hackers compared to them. Then couple that with the fact you're on TV, in front of an audience, and under a huge amount of pressure. Tour players are flat out phenomenal.

Yeah, I know how tough PGA courses are. I've been around the block a time or two. Why the preaching?

Perhaps because not everyone really understands the difference between a score on their home track and how they would fare on a tournament course . That would not be you '76, clearly.

I'm reminded of a comment someone made in another thread about how a low handicap amateur might be competitive with JD in a tournament, given his current form. Let's face the facts, those guys are playing in a different golfing universe - they didn't devote much of their waking life to the great game of goff for nuth'n.

Kenny G. just sank a long one on 18 (replay on TGC) ..... nice. Gotta love the expression on his face. Priceless.

These courses are all under 7000 yards AND the players aren't playing the same tees as the pros, so you can imagine they're at about 6500 yards for them or so.

And I doubt Kenny G is terribly nervous about being on TV. Simple fact is a lot of these guys have vanity handicaps. I'd play Kenny G straight up. If I lose he can play a song for me. That'd be punishment enough.

LOL. I'm thinking you might blow a few short putts (on the high side, naturally ) just to avoid the agony of victory in that particular case.........

Good point about the yardages for the amateurs. At any rate that guy G. is a pleasure to watch. He's got 'bottle', as we say in the old country. Makes you wonder how firm one's own knees would be on the 18th tee, from any tee.

When I try to imagine myself on the 13th at Torrey standing in the tournament box, well ..... it isn't a pretty thought.

hahhaaa, that's good!

But how about JB Holmes! What a crazy finish. Eagle, birdie. I knew that putt on his last was going to fall. I could see it in the way he was studying the putt. I think Frank Nobilo knew it too. He pointed out in his commentary about the extra attention to detail JB was making on the putt. I've yet to play Pebble Beach, or any of the Monterey Peninsula courses. Look freakin' sweet!

hey man, lay off kenny g. i dig the sax.

Yeah, he's a consummate musician, even if his taste is a little lacking. He does hold the world record for circular breathing too, somewhere near 45 minutes. That's no easy feat.

since we are on this line of thought...I have always wondered how hndcps and indexs relate to different courses....for instance I'm and 8...i play 6500 yard courses usually rated 69 or 70 with slopes around 120...If I shoot an 78at home then I play a tour course with a 74 rating and a 135 slope w/ stimp greens @ 12...along with a pro with a +5 what the hell should we expect as a result and is 13 shots fair? I'm thinkin I would get my ass kicked but I'm interested in the how tranferable indexs or hndcps are btw our home tracks and a tour course?

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
