As a golf metaphor, Tiger shortsided himself and had a buried lie. With today's shot, I'd say that's as good as he could have done from there.

Well let's give him a big pat on the back because he was man enough to stand up and read a piece of paper in front of his mommy on live TV. Makes me almost forget about him banging about a dozen chicks behind his wife's back with two young children at home............. Courage???

Really, what would you have him do? It sounded to me like he was the one that wrote it, so what difference does it make?

And yeah, courage is what it takes. It takes courage to admit he screwed up. Courage comes in many different forms. Definition: quality of being brave: the ability to face danger, difficulty, uncertainty, or pain without being overcome by fear or being deflected from a chosen course of action Usage: She showed great courage throughout this difficult time. It took courage and humility. The intent of today wasn't to make you forget about what he did, it's to ask for forgiveness and privacy. I'm not sure why you seem to be so offended by that.

Is Tiger the only professional athlete that has given a Mea culpa speech that was not charged with a crime (kobe Bryant) or took a performance enhancing drug? Tiger never cheated the game of golf.....not like Mark McGwire cheated baseball. Who cares what Tiger does after his round of golf. What he did or does in the future is between him & his family.

NEWSFLASH: Athletes are NOT role models. They are just regular people that have a special talent in one sport. They have the same problems we all have after the game is over.

Someone should tell Ernie Els that only die-hard fans are watching golf without Tiger. His news conference didn't deny anyone from watching the tournament on Friday.

Next time Tom Watson has marital problems or another problem with alcohol he should have a weekly news conference so we all know what is going on in his personal life.

I know that and you know that. You know who doesn't know? The children. The youth that go out and emulate what this guy does on the course. And for some, will want to emulate what he does off the course. Good and careful parenting can prevent that. But as you can see by some of the adults that have been raised up in this society, we don't always have that, do we? Teaching to admire the skills and not the person can be a hard thing to do.

You really kinda nailed it. The problem in this scenario is that the athlete basically gets blamed inadirectly because of that lack of parenting a lot of times. What sucks even worse about it is that's something that's probably not gonna change anytime soon. I had this conversation with a co-worker the other night. Her mother is a 3rd grade teacher at a school that... how do I put it nicely?? well, it's in a part of town where you probably lock your doors and roll up your windows if you have to roll through it. Anyway, she told me about one of her mother's students (in 3rd grade, remember) was flashing a condom around class, basically trying to show it off and look cool. So they called the kids parents in to talk to them about it. To make a long story short, the kid's dad was pissed because they called them to the school for that. Why? Because he had given his son the condom! He said he needed to make sure his son was protected! While I think the guys intentions were good, how about you teach your 3rd grade child to keep it in his pants instead of giving him a condom??

I got a little sidetracked there, but my point is that athletes shouldn't get pinned as unwilling role models because parents dont want to teach their kids right from wrong. While this incident has certainly changed things, we still gotta realize that Tiger does have tons of redeeming qualities. He's one of the hardest working people on tour, and it has paid off. I've often heard/read many people say that Phil may have more raw talent than Tiger does, but what separates them is a combination of Tiger's mental game and his work ethic.

Harsh, and you're right in a sense IMO. But there's more to it than that almost certainly. TW has lost much in the way of the respect of vast numbers of people, he must be acutely conscious of this. He must want and need to have at least some of that back, and he knows this won't be quick or easy.

TW could easily have blown this whole thing off in a sense, you know .... none of your business ...it's my private life and my family's .... don't expect a word of apology or explanation from me now or ever ..... etc etc. I thought perhaps he might do that today and he most certainly did not. Maybe he hasn't hit driver yet (my earlier metaphor), maybe he has just teed up the ball and taken a couple of practice swings. It's a start.

I have now watched the video of him 3 times. Alone, with wife and once with parents. I was talking to my mom last night after watching it for the third time.

I have to say it concerns me. I think he has been whisked into a type of solitary confinement for the last 45 days. My mom said he appeared almost like Patty Hearst when she was kidnapped and brain washed. I am not so sure he is in touch with reality right now. The more I listen to his statement the more I think he actually took it too far. One thing is for sure he has painted himself into a big fat corner and left ZERO room for failure. He basically will be living the life of a Monk to live up to his comments.

We speculate. Personally I think that Tiger knows to a large extent what he is in fact doing or rather trying to do at this point in the process, as opposed to the interesting suggestion above. Whether we know what he is really doing is another matter. Perhaps we will learn eventually, perhaps not.

BonoVox , yep, this is pretty much how I saw it.
But then, there are two sides to everything: you see him out jogging and hitting golf balls the two days prior to this public statement and it's like you're seeing two different people.

The story sure has been beaten to death but I still interested. I don't understand why this thing has grown so big in comparison to similar news stories about other celebs and political figures. Should we make a list? Tiger Woods has not been indicted of a felony. Moreover, I could not care less about what Faldo thinks or says about Tiger.

I can't stop thinking about, IMO, how ill he looked.

Same here.

Anybody notice they lost the feed for the front camera about half way through it? The rest of the statement covered from the over his shoulder view with mom front row in background. That was pretty strange. You can see his mom and others looking back a few times I presume they were distracted by the techs trying to get the camera back in action. (pretty bad deal being some of his statements would have been more powerful with his expression/stare directly into the camera making eye contact with the viewers)

People discrediting sexual addiction sound very vacuous. They do not back up their statements with any scientific studies, nor do they have any credentials to make a substantive opinion on the matter.

I saw a couple of minutes. He started with "Good morning blah blah blah", then moved on to "I want to say to each of you yada yada yada", and he lost me at "Elin didn't beat my cheatin' ass . . . something something". Dude, don't apologize to me - aplogize to your wife, her mom, your mom, and do it in private.

I hope Tiger gets better - until he does, what he says is standard 12 step PR bulls***.

I don't really doubt there is such thing as sexual addiction. But from what little I know that is the truth in this situation IMHO it does not qualify. This was a situation called power, money, famous, opportunity (on the road alone a lot) and plenty of women throwing themselves at him. (add probable dysfunctional upbringing at that) BTW I still have not heard Tiger or any of his people blame this on sexual addiction.

Sexual addiction involves a lot more than having multiple affairs. (though that is a piece of the puzzle) Seems this is overall compulsive behavior.

The fact is, psychologists disagree on whether sex addiction is a true disease, so I think either point of view is valid. However I think it's telling that, unlike alcoholism, substance abuse, and pathological gambling to name a few, "sex addiction" is

not included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the standard for mental health workers: http://allpsych.com/disorders/impuls...rol/index.html

    • Have you looked at Model Local Rule F-9 Relief from Tree Roots in or Close to Fairway?  You could extend this to cover exposed rocks.  The rule is recommended to be used only for areas relatively near the fairway, a player who hits a shot 20 yards in the woods doesn't really deserve relief.   Players can always take Unplayable Ball relief, they're not required to play it from a rock or a root.  Of course, they hate to take the penalty stroke too.
    • I agree with @klineka, you're clearly doing something right.  Its always going to be a bit of a guessing game if you don't have any scoring history.  On the other hand, understanding that it takes only 54 holes to establish an actual handicap, and they have about 6 weeks in which to play and post enough scores, I don't think its at all unreasonable to require them to have an official handicap before they become eligible for prizes.  I don't know how you structure the fees for the series of competitions, but if its possible they'll play with the group without being eligible for prizes, you could consider a way to let them do that without contributing to the prize pool.
    • I run tournaments and want to put in a local rule that allows relief from tree roots and rocks that are not loose impediments. We have some really terrible lies in some of our courses in my area and nobody is getting paid enough to break clubs. Let me know if you think the verbage for this rule makes sense. Local Rule Roots and Rocks You may move your ball from a tree root or buried rock one club length for free relief no closer to the hole. However you may not use this rule to get relief from a tree, bush, boulder, or other foliage hindering your swing. Your only option here is to play it as it lies or take an unplayable for a one stroke penalty.
    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
