Usually only when I'm in the gym, but a lot of stuff I listen to I don't necessarily consider metal, though others might. Kinda like borderline metal maybe? I dunno Stuff like:
A7X
Breaking Benjamin
Disturbed
SoaD
Three Days Grace
APC
Metallica
Nine Inch Nails
Seether
Dream Theater

Do yall consider any of this (besides the bands that have been mentioned in previous posts) metal? Oh yeah, and what about Coheed and Cambria? I think they're ok too, but, they're not really considered metal either, are they?

And for the record, none of them come close to Pearl Jam for me, but they're definitely not metal, so I'll just shut up now

Most of those bands would be classified as "Nu Metal" My favorite metal band is Children of Bodom. My favoriate band is Tool, which you could classify as Hard Alternative. Here is a little picture with some different genres of metal, might help you out: http://thislifeilead.files.wordpress.../08/image2.png

Yeah, Tool is pretty wild. I remember one track, cant remember which CD (I think it was Undertow, but not 100% sure), but it was called Disgustipated. Seriously crazy stuff. I really liked Schism when it came out, but the local rock radio station played it entirely too much.

BTW, awesome chart, I like that! That's part of the reason I never really put music into really specific genres though. Like how Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden are all grunge. Oh wait, no they're not, they're alternative. Wait, no they're not, they're punk.... See my point? It can kinda make your head spin thinking about it. To me, it's all rock, know what I mean?

Then to top it all off, I go to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame a few years back, and they have sections with N.W.A., Snoop, Pac, etc... Like I said, it can kinda make your head spin.

If anyone's confused about metal genres here's a little something I found that might help out (warning: don't click if you're particularly offended by bad language or the slaying of princesses).

Heavy Metal
The protagonist arrives on a harley, kills the dragon, drinks a few beers and has sex with the princess.

Power Metal
The protagonist arrives riding a white unicorn, escapes from the dragon, saves the princess and makes love to her in an enchanted forest.

Thrash Metal
The protagonist arrives, fights the dragon, saves the princess and ••••s her.

Folk Metal
The protagonist arrives with some friends playing accordions, violins, flutes and many more weird instruments causing the dragon to fall asleep. The princess joins them and they dance their way out of the castle.

Viking Metal
The protagonist arrives in a ship, kills the dragon with his mighty axe, skins the dragon and eats it, rapes the princess to death, steals her belongings and burns the castle before leaving.

Death Metal
The protagonist arrives, kills the dragon, ••••s the princess and kills her, then leaves.

Black Metal
The protagonist arrives at midnight, kills the dragon and impales it in front of the castle. Then he sodomizes the princess, drinks her blood in a ritual before killing her. Then he impales the princess next to the dragon.

Goregrind
The protagonist arrives, kills the dragon and spreads its guts in front of the castle, ••••s the princess and kills her. Then he slashes her belly and ••••s her guts before eating them.

Grindcore
The protagonist arrives, screams something completely indecipherable for about two minutes and then leaves...

Doom Metal
The protagonist arrives, sees the immense size of the dragon and talks about how he could never beat him, then he gets depressed and commits suicide. The dragon eats his body and the princess as dessert. That's the end of the sad story.

Gothic Metal
The princess in a velvet costume starts singing soprano. The protagonist completes the duet when he shows up, they sing while the dragon plays the flute. Suddenly the dragon swallows up the pipe and accidentally scorches the princess and the protagonist, and then he suffocates to death. All their souls are damned in hell for eternity.

Progressive Metal
The protagonist arrives with a guitar and plays a 26 minute solo. The dragon kills himself out of boredom. The protagonist arrives to the princess' bedroom, plays another solo with all the techniques he learned from spending the last year in his conservatory. The princess escapes looking for the Heavy Metal protagonist.

Industrial Metal
The protagonist arrives wearing greasy overcoat, makes an obscene gestures towards the dragon, and gets escorted out of fairy tale land by security guards.

Speed Metal
Suddenly there is a short solo, the dragon is confused; someone's screaming weird stuff; the princess realizes she's been deflowered; the dragon and the princess are still looking for the one who caused this.

Christian Metal
The protagonist rides in on his way home from Church and sings a mushy power ballad to the dragon about how much Jesus loves him and that the dragon should turn to Him. The Dragon is immediately converted, and when the princess wants to 'thank' the protagonist he replies, "Sorry, but I don't believe in having sex before marriage."

Glam Metal
The protagonist arrives; the dragon laughs at the protagonist's appearance and lets him enter. He steals the princess' make up and tries to paint the castle in a pink.

Nu Metal
The protagonist arrives in a run down Honda Civic and attempts to fight the dragon but he burns to death when his moronic baggy clothes catch fire.

I didn't expect a thread like this on TST.

I was into metal and hardcore in high school and college. I went to local shows and played bass in a metalcore band. I still listen to the music at times but it doesn't define me like it did then.

Older bands I like/liked are Exodus, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Slayer, old Sepultura, and some others. Some of this was really before my time and I had to search it out, but some of them are still making music today.

The genre I still consistently like the most is Swedish/Nordic death metal. Bands like Soilwork, In Flames, At the Gates/The Haunted, Dark Tranquility, Arch Enemy, etc.

I still enjoy bands like Killswitch Engage and Unearth though that genre was once a big part of metalcore which came after punk and then hardcore, and somewhere in there was my "heyday" I guess.

edit: now that I'm married with a daughter I usually reserve this sort of music for working out, yard work, or driving in the car by myself.

Believe it or not, back in school, I was in a metal band. This was, of course, years before my professional career, but I did enjoy it, even if it wasn't my kind of music.

Trivium is an amazing band, i have seen them live several times, there guitar work is amazing too, i went to The Mayhem Festival 09, so i got to see Slayer, Trivium, God Forbid, Job for a Cowboy, Black Dahlia Murder, Whitechapel, All That Remains, Killswitch Engage and Bullet for my Valentine all in one sitting. God that was probably the best time of my life...

That is cool, were you a cover band or did you make original stuff, guitar player i assume?

Nah, I'm talking a couple of kids in high school that can barely play here, I was the only one who had a proper musical education, and for them, I played the bass. I am a studio piano (keyboard) player, as well as the bass, and sometimes, the guitar, but for most applications, I'm a piano player and composer. Think Patrick Leonard, David Foster, Michael Omartian, etc.

Good luck. Shows are fun. Looking back on it I wish I'd taken it a little more seriously.

i like metal bands like sabbath, pantera, system, etc. and while i appreciate death metal as a guitarist cause i can hear how talented a lot of those guys are, their concerts and music videos all look like white power skinhead rallies. somewhere i would not like to be.

Hit all four par threes in one (a first) - parred each; still had a couple 3 putt bogies; and blew up on 3 of the par 5’s (go figure)). The blow ups were some serious tree rattlers - amplifying how I got stupid and greedy instead of smart and content to just get back in the short stuff.
