Wow, i guess i never really thought about this. good thread and one i need to continue to come back to to giv emyself a reality check. When hitting the driver well( which i am not currently) carry distances were solidly around 260-275(occasional shots rolling out to 300+). I have since not been able to keep most driver shots on the course so that has been a little bit difficult, and been more around 235-250. I then get rattled and try to force my way back up to the 260-275 range and then things go majorly array.

Have to remember that 250 is a long way out and to continue to stay within my means.

Threads like these depress me , especially now with my GPS Watch, I know how far I *really* hit a driver. I guess I should just concentrate on what I have and make the best of it.

250 yards is not only respectable, it is a phenomenal carry distance. Very few people I know can consistently carry that distance.

It's huge I must admit. Total carry and roll is attainable but to carry it. Taking into account my range is uphill with the balls and winter here I can carry the 200 yard marker according to Google earth it's over 80 yards to the back hedge it seems so far away hard to believe the likes of Mcilroy and Co are clearing that hedge.

It's also comforting to know that game golf doesn't lie and there are loads of golfers my age and handicap not hitting it any further than I do

Recently played with this very nice young guy who was hitting irons at least 250 consistently. One hole is a 337 yard carry over water, but although he thought he "might" be able to reach the green,  he opted to lay up. He was 2 under the whole round but bogeyed 18. Not a pro, just a good athlete, played indoor volleyball in college. One of the nicest young men I have ever met. He works in a bank near Oceanside. Classic, swing, very smooth. One thing I noticed was he took care in his posture and making sure he had a steady base.

This is what I've taken from a lot of recent threads on this topic and it supports what I see on the few occasions when I play with others.

I also think this site is made up of a lot of players much better than me or those I've played with.

Most of the guys I've played alongside are hacks, but the one exception last year had a handicap similar to you @Brakkus. I was impressed by how well he played. Both he and his wife told me he was "on" that day and playing better than usual, but it was a pleasure to see golf played that well (by my standards anyway).

True to the stats, he not only kept the ball in play and putted very well, but he outdrove me by a good distance even though he was almost ten years older.

So if you take 250 as a carry distance for your Driver, your other clubs carry distances would look something like this.

Driver: 250

3-wood: 225

5-wood/2-hybrid: 210

7-wood/3-hybrid: 200

4-hybrid/4-iron: 193

5-iron: 180

6-iron: 170

7-iron: 160

8-iron: 148

9-iron: 135

PW: 123

GW: 108

SW: 93

LW: 78

This is assuming solid contact and average clubhead speed of slightly over 100 mph with the driver.

That sounds about right.  At last check, my SS was 107/108 and my carry distances are all almost exactly the above number +10. :)

For me 250 yds would be a miracle.

I know this can vary hugely but under normal conditions, how much carry/roll might a 250-260 TOTAL drive have?

The thread is about 250 carry distance.

Maybe 10 yards of roll on a 250 yard drive, bringing it up to 260.

You would probably figure a little more roll than 10 yards, unless you have some sort of unearthly high descent angle, I think the consensus is about 20 yards of roll in average ground conditions. Which takes you around 270.

Golf message boards, though, are another matter.

But nowadays, video/radar/Game Golf/etc... , or its not true. If someone's not providing those for backup, then dubious.

    • Hitting some good shots on my golf trip. It's good I can tell when I hit better shots the way I want to swing the ball versus when I use an older swing. Shockingly, the short game has been at worst, not harmful to my game. I am using similar feels to the full swing, in that I try to get my hands down. I've been nipping the ball clean off the turf.
    • I was laid off two months ago. Good severance, a 90 day layoff announcement regulation the company wanted to avoid so technically I'm still on the payroll for a few weeks, and a bunch of banked PTO, so I'm in a great spot and working on a startup idea I've been batting around with my brother for a while. That means I've got time to get to the gym! I'm at like 60-75 minutes 5x a week of strength training, and either a run or a bunch of time playing soccer or tennis with my daughter on the weekends. Stronger than I've been in forever. Up ~5 pounds of (noticeable!) muscle!
    • Do you have examples of exceptional scores versus their established handicap indexes?
    • Day 539, April 23, 2024 Mirror work once again. When I get back to swings, I'll just do it A. LOT.
    • A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club?
