This is Day 1 with the new Instructor. After talking for awhile about what I want to accomplish and my game in general and then hitting some balls, he asked me to work on three things during this lesson:

Grip: Little more neutral (was VERY strong) and reduce forward press at address.
Stance: Widen... was standing with feet very close together for someone who is 6'3"
Posture: Less knee flex, more forward bend.

I think I was able to pick up all three fairly quickly and I was surprised at what a difference it has made. I've played 9 holes twice since the first lesson and I can tell a BIG difference in ball striking. In both videos below, the left side is AFTER I changed what he suggested and the right side is BEFORE I made the changes. Grip, Stance, and Posture are all improved I think...

(sorry they are a little choppy in parts... we were stopping to review and for him to explain things to me... hope to have better videos soon...)

I watched the videos a few times and have trouble seeing any real changes in the motion you make. Your instructor fixed your setup but didn't care about the club being behind your buttcheeks when the shaft is parallel? All you can do from there is loop the club. Why did he draw the shaft plane? It's nearly impossible (and almost always bad) to stay on the shaft plane as your right elbow folds. Virtually everyone - except when putting or hitting really small chips - comes into impact above the shaft plane and much closer to elbow plane. But that line's not drawn?

"The expert golfer has maximum time to make minimal compensations. The poorer player has minimal time to make maximum compensations." - And no, I'm not Mac. Please do not PM me about it. I just think he is a crazy MFer and we could all use a little more crazy sometimes.

Certainly a valid observation. Let me just say, I muted the audio and added the music just for the sake of wanting to play with my video editor, but if I play the raw video what you hear him say as I am taking the club away is "the club is too far behind you here" and "we'll work on that next time." He literally just wanted to keep it to Stance/Posture/Grip for Lesson One.

I'm sure we'll begin to tackle the other issues in Lesson Two and beyond!

Since the issue came up, I have been giving some thought to why I bring the club so far inside. My guess is that I have convinced myself that is what I need to do to have the inside/out swing path.

Any suggestions for getting out of that mindset and any drills to help get to the inside/out path without taking the club so far inside on takeaway?

I've been Playing Golf for: 12 years

My current handicap index or average score is: 7.6

My typical ball flight is: High/ Slight fade or draw

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Pull left


Finally got some new videos this weekend. Working on a few things, biggest issue as mentioned above is tendency to pull the ball left. It isn't so much a hook, but straight left. Working on getting closer to the ball at address, and picking up the tempo a bit. Happy for any feedback, thanks!

Geez, I'm probably the last person who should be making swing comments! But... My opinion on why you're taking the club so inside on your takeaway is because you are initiating your takeaway with your hands instead of your shoulders. Your hands are the first thing to move.

I think the super mega slow mo - NBCeee vision videos at the beginning are hard to decipher


I did a screen capture on your vid. What I'm pointing out is look how far your club has moved on takeaway and your shoulders have not started to move yet. You have picked up the club to almost 45* completely with your wrists. I have this same problem from time to time. I have to really concentrate on my left shoulder initiating the takeaway. This keeps me from picking the club up and bringing it too inside. Please keep in mind that I'm a 23 hdcp! This is just what I see, I am in no way qualified to give swing advice!
