Something I've never noticed before. When I've focused specifically on my head position, it's always been from face on to see if it's staying centered, lifting up etc. And it's always seemed OK (for my skill level) from that viewpoint. Today I was looking at some swings down the line and realized my noodle was pulling back (ie. away from the ball) a good amount from address to impact even while staying pretty stable horizontally and vertically -- as illustrated below.

HeadDTL.jpg

Not exactly #1 on my long list of things to worry about, but I'd certainly be interested if anyone has a opinion on how it happens and what it means.

You only posted the image so I won't quote it, but NICE Stretch, really nice!

I'll PM you about the AimPoint stuff.

I think I remember your handicap being a bit higher last year or so Stretch.  Was it your ballstriking improvement that gets the credit?

BTW, I'm 6'3 and as tall as I want to be.  Size 14's:  the last shoe you can actually find at the store .  I definitely don't envy your "situation".  Once you get the extension back and through part of the swing, I'm sure you'll be hammering it 30 yards past me on a bad day.  Good luck.

Thanks BP. Yeah, at 6'7" there is something deep down in my brain that just doesn't believe I'll still be able to reach the golf ball if I push up off the ground properly and get those skinny legs straight. It's probably my most persistent bugbear and a big part of the reason why I'm a short knocker and a pull fader. Such a lovely combo!

As far as scores go, I've practiced a lot and played a lot in the last year so I've mostly just learned to scrape around better given the limitations of my ball striking. I'm pretty straight, so I don't blow up much, and can usually get onto 9 or 10 greens in regulation. The difference between a decent round and an indifferent one then is a couple of putts or U/Ds either way. Don't have any particularly great ambitions -- I'd like better dynamics in my swing, to hit it a bit further and to have to option to move the ball right to left occasionally if that's called for. Just got to keep on plugging away...

I wonder if Matt Kuchar's new swing would be a reasonable model to glean principles from for you...  He's not quite as tall, but he flattened it out recently from what I can tell and you guys stand similarly at address....  Just putting a bug in your brain..

  • 1 month later...

Have made some changes in the last month. Although I don't generally worry about my grip too much, I've been consciously trying to get the club under the pad of my left hand a bit more -- per the famous Hogan illustration. This just seems to give me more stability through the hit, without the effective weakening of my left hand grip promoting any more shots out to the right than usual, as far as I can tell. I'm going to stick with it.

Hogan-LeftHandGrip.jpg

Other than that, it's the usual few steps forward, few steps back. I've picked a couple of things out below.

06:27analyzr.jpg

This is what it all actually looks like at the moment. Hitting an 8 iron to a target green 140 yards away with 10% flight restricted range balls. This shot was pin high about six feet left of the flag.

Thanks to Analyzr's new database validation feature, I found some orphan footage on my hard drive today and noticed that, by pure chance, I'd recorded two range sessions exactly a year apart: May 25, 2010 and May 25, 2011. So I put together a little trip down memory lane.

Comments pertain primarily to the year-ago footage. Not that the current swing is anything much to write home about, but it is nice to see you've made some progress.

Incredible progress, nice job.

If I may be so bold, I would like to recommend something to focus your attention on next.

From the head on point of view, I noticed a couple of things.

At address your weight is mostly on your front foot instead of balanced. Throughout your swing it looks as though you never really get loaded up on your right side. This can promote an OTT swing (which means you have to work harder right now to keep it on plane) and can lead to you leaning back in your follow through.

My thought is that if you can get yourself really loaded up on your right side it will allow you to really release on your downswing, giving your a more balanced follow through, a better position at impact, and quite a bit more distance as well.

More importantly, it's simply not the way the trend is going, which is definitely more towards a more centered pivot.

Not too concerned with trends in teaching, but it wasn't consistent with what the person was already working with some success.

I apologize. I am at work and glanced through the thread before commenting. I personally don't care for the stack and tilt method and didn't realize until after I posted and read back through some of the other comments that was what the OP was working on. If that is the method you are adhering to it is definitely working very well and disregard my advice.
