What's the point in playing a Pro V?

I play more conservatively with the premium balls than I do with cheaper ones -- I can't tell you what affect this has on my scores, since I still shoot in the inconsistent range, but I can tell you they do have that much of an effect on my game.

I LOVE the pro v1. I used to think that there was no way a ball was going to make any noticeable difference in my game untill I won a box of pro v1's in a raffle. The ball alone took atleast 3 strokes off my round easy. My drives are straighter, I can work the ball like I want to, chipping is so much easier to control distance and it feels great off the putter face other balls feel real hard and klinky. I will never go back to a cheap ball it's just alot more fun when the ball is right next to the flag and nearly sitting in it's own ball mark on the green.

have any of you tried the Top Flite D2 Feel? It has the distance of the XL, but the feel of a more quality ball. I'm able to spin these very nicely around the greens. At 15 bucks for 15 of them, it's a sweet value also. I'm not saying I play them, but I've played them before when I found a few the other week. I personally play the Taylormade TP Red.

In the Bag (right now)...

I played a pitch shot from 40 yards with a PW and it bounced once and stopped for a chance to putt for par with a ProV1x. now, thats what I am looking for in a ball.
Its all about the over all performance of the ball and the most important aspect of the ball for me is around the green and the short game.

That post is full of lol. They ball didn't take 3 strokes off your game, you did. As evident by your straighter drives. Your drives aren't going to go straighter because of a pro v ball. Give yourself a little credit.

Why would you expect to hop and stop a PW from 40 yards? Maybe with a SW or LW I'd want it to check, but with that distance and that club, I'd expect the ball to release - at least that's what I'd be playing for.

I should start hitting those 40 yard shots with a PW. The hop and stop is driving me crazy on my sw. My distance control sucks with this type of shot and always end up short.

For starters, my new fitted Titleist mesh hat says PO V1 on the side. JK. Seriously, I am golfing pretty well these days and the PRO V1X and TP Black seem to be doing the job for me. Distance is good, iron feel is great, around the green they do what I want and the putting feel is also excellent. I'm just trying to decide which ball I like more. They're not making the TP Black anymore and I may need to stock up.

Exactly! If it hop and stops from 40 with the PW then IMO it will spin WAY to much with a full SW or even 1/2 & 3/4 LW..

I played the Pro-V for a few rounds last year and it spun to much for me. When I say that I mean off the driver and irons. A draw turned into a hook. I like a softer feeling ball, but I don't need the softer cover of the Pro-V. HX Hot Bite or HX Bite does the trick for me.

i cant disagree more. you seriously think that a cheap $20 a dozen ball is going to even compare to a $52 a dozen ball. every tournament, match, and qualifier I have ever played in a played either a Pro V1 or a Pro V1x and they never let me down. its about consistency and having a ball that can stop when you need it to or run out. its not all about which ball goes the farthest if your not on the green in a reasonable number of strokes, each ball is going to fly different and getting used to the exact same ball flight with each different shot is important to build confidence when trying to hit over or under something or needing to carry a bunker and make the ball come back to a front pin. the Pro V's are meant to perform and if you know how to make them preform then you will see a clear difference in the balls. I'm not saying everyone should go out any buy a bunch of new Pro V1's, I'm simply disagreeing with your statement that the Pro V1 and the Pro V1x aren't all there hyped up to be and it would probably do you some good to try out more high end balls than just the Titleists because each company manufactures their high end balls differently.
i would never play a top flight in a tournament or any round involving money. you have barely any control of them once they hit the green and half of them don't roll true, considering the bucket of Pro V's and i have against the bucket or random low end balls, in my basements putting area. players shouldn't have to read the greens from 175 yards out knowing that they are going to land it 5 yards short and its going to roll up. if your in the fairway you should land it on the hole and it should stay there but with the top flight xl's and many other low end balls the performance just isn't there and according to golf digest at a certain point once you develop consistency in ball striking and shot shaping abilities the ball you use actually does matter.

edit: after 9 holes the ball shouldnt look bad unless your hitting trees and cart paths because i played one for 84 strait holes

.

Sorry dude, most of us don't hit too many greens from 175 yards let alone stopping the ball on top of the hole. Stopping dead can also be a function of trajectory. I was playing a Nike One Tour D the other day and hit a nice 5i from 175 and it hit the center of the green and rolled off the back.

I get what you're saying - you're a 1.3. A lot of guys clutching their Pro V1 boxes like life preservers are 15s.

thats not the ball because iv used them before and they stop you probably didnt come down on it very hard because you were hitting a long iron. even from say 140 yards the top flight xl's have a tendency of running out. if you ask me the point of choosing a ball is the make sure you have the most control over it possible at all times weather your 200 out of 35 out you want to have good spin control and a repeated ball flight

The point that I was trying to make is that I am a slightly above average player and can't get a premium ball to stop in its tracks with anything over a 7iron. Unless it is from a tee on an elevated box.

+1.

Low handicappers will benefit from a premium ball, anybody else would probably benefit from a ball with less spin.

    • Agree. The next omission needs to be that ridiculous team concept. Nobody cares about a team when they really don’t represent anything except being a group of diminished morality and/or washed up pro golfers. Or wait, we’ve also got total nobodies who’ve accomplished nothing who now get a participation trophy! Doesn’t that sound invigorating!
    • LIV moving to 72 holes is a subtle admission that 54 holes was nothing but a joke all along.
    • I was going to start a thread, but this seems like the place.  Yesterday I played my matchplay match at my local club.  My opponent is a notorious sandbagger by reputation.  The pro once pulled his tournament rounds from the past several years and said that it is impossible his tournament rounds are legit based on his handicap. here is what happened last night.  I am getting 4 shots from him.  His current handicap index is 15.3 i shot 45 on the front.   Was down 4 after nine, he had three birdies and shot even par. I was closed out on thirteen, we halved with a bogey.  That bogey put him one over par for his round.   He then took a triple on 14 and then left. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he lied about his score.   I wrote down on my scorecard what the score was.  He put higher values that didn’t affect the outcome of the match to pad his score and apparently make it not look as obvious.   He shot 36 on the front, but claimed 40.  The higher values for his score were in the online scoring app our club uses.  He did it this way: I won #7. He had a 2 foot putt for par that if he made would still lose the hole.   He picked up and said it didn’t matter since I won.  He took a 5 instead of a 4 after picking up a gimme. on #8 his approach shot on this par 4 was 8 inches.  I verbally conceded the putt but I had hit into a hazard.  I finished the hole with a 6.  Instead of birdie he put in for par. on #9, another par 4, his approach was to 18 inches.  I missed my par putt and then knowing how close I verbally conceded the putt.  I missed my bogey putt, he never conceded mine.  Instead of birdie he put down a bogey. He padded his score by 4 shots on the front.  And then did again on 10.  I rinsed one and made 6 on a par 4.  I putted out and he was fishing balls out of the lake so I drove off to the next tee.  He had 15 feet laying two but claimed a 5.     love to know the odds of a 15 handicap being even thru 12 holes on a round of golf.
