Oooh buddy, you picked a bad day to tease the astronomer. What with the black swan of Cygnus rising against the new moon and all.......

that's astrology.

astronomy is looking at planets and stars.

that's astrology.

Sure it is. Well, I better get back to my observational cosmetology research. The cosmic microwave background isn't going to put on its own mascara, after all! (And black holes may have no hair, but they're still FABULOUS!)

I was paired up with a couple guys not too long ago that drove me up a damn wall.

I'm nto exactly the most talkative guy on the course, especially if I'm playing with strangers so I usually keep to myself with a little chit chat here and there.
But these guys, obviously drunk from 1st tee, had a cigar in their mouths the whole time, huffin and puffin all over the place. I don't usually mind this but the amount of yelling and obscenity I witnessed...

I remember distinctly, one hole, the guy had a 3ft putt. He went on to putting it long, leaving him at like 8 ft, then back and forth, he must've putt a good 8 times or so. he was so pissed off, he slammed his putter against the green leaving a giant divot/hole. Guy was cursing and blabbering about how his putter is a piece of shit and on and on. All the while, his playing partner is laughing out loud, drunk, and generally annoying the hell out of me.

I left after the first 9 and spent the rest of the time hitting balls at the range.

There's a guy I (used to) play with a lot, as he is a friend of a friend, and my friend would often include him in golf. This guy throws tantrums from the first tee and they're like they are from an out of control 3 year old. He yells, swears, throws his clubs, stomps all over everyone's lines, shoots out of turn, talks during everyone's swings....and even takes PRACTICE PUTTS after he misses when other people are waiting to putt. He's a jackass. Well the last time we played, about a month or so ago, he went from yelling and swearing at himself to yelling and swearing at ME. I had the nerve to tell him "Hey man, I've seen you hit some awesome golf shots, you've done it before, you'll do it again - just take it easy and I am sure you'll get your groove going" and he just exploded and started cussing me out, top volume. I was driving with him in the cart down the fairway when he pulled that nonsense so I just whipped the wheel to the left and pushed him out with my right hand. He went flying and tumbled around a bit. I took his bag off and threw it on the ground. My buddy went and picked him up. The rest of the round was surreal in that he didn't mention me tossing him out at all and we just finished up with a minimum of chatter. That's it for me, though, no more playing with that guy ever. I am a very mellow guy as far as things go, not any kind of badass at all, but I just finally had enough and snapped.

I played in a league one year with a guy that never shut up. He talked all the time, even when you were far enough away to not know what he was saying, he still talked. My bet always was that he talked in his sleep. Drove me nuts and drove everyone else nuts as well.

what am I supposed to say when they yell "good shot," and then my ball fades away and misses the fairway? "No, actually it wasn't a good shot?" "Maybe for you it would be but I like to play from the fairway?"

You don't have to say anything. Or you could just say thanks and move on to the next shot.

Totally agree-I'm cool with any kind of outgoing, friendly behavior as long as they're not constantly giving advice,

That's my one big peeve. It's a golf ball!! Stop scouring the woods for it. I also hate when a guy brings a ball retriever and feels the need to pull it out at every water hazard, whether his ball is in there or not.

For real... I'd love to have been in the group behind this scene. Watching some fool stunt-roll on the ground after being tossed from the cart. I can only imagine his thoughts afterwards. How he didn't get up and beat the pulp out of the guy who pushed him is beyond me. Even if he DID deserve to be tossed from the cart. That had to be embarrassing as hell.

Yea I'm glad this was brought up. It annoys me to no end to hear someone yell compliments after Every. Single. Shot. I only give out compliments if it was truly a good shot, or if someone's having a hard time I might try and cheer them up a little bit when the time is right (like if they have a stretch of bad shots and then hit a semi-decent one I'll give them a good compliment).

This was friggin awesome. I'd pay to see that!

Just got back from my annual golf outing and we had a guy like that. This guy didn't shut up for 90 holes or in the clubhouse or back at the hotel. The worst part was that he was taking all kinds of "Controlled substances" the whole time, so he wasn't even making any sense. By the second day we were all running to the golf carts to make sure we didn't get paired up with that guy!

There's a guy in my league who drives everyone crazy, real piece of work this guy. He's basically a commentator out there. Johnny freakin Miller. He says the dumbest things. I think he feels he needs to tell everyone where their ball is because they can't see it themselves or something. "okay it's flying, it's up in the air, do you see it?? Oh it's heading towards the water...... SPLASH!! Oh, boy right in the water, did you see it? It landed right in the water over there."

One time I was playing against him, I hit a wedge into this one green...as I'm walking up to pick up the divot he yelled at me and told me I forgot my clubs. Like I was just going to keep walking towards the green and play the rest of my round with only the wedge that was in my hand.

Unwarranted compliments can be annoying but not nearly my biggest playing partner pet peeve.

1.) Cheating/Playing by your own rules. I may be alone on this but why bother? Mulligans, playing OB as if it is hazard, grounding club in a hazard, etc. If you want to play that way "just for fun" fine but don't bother telling me what your "score" was. And for the love of all things holy, do not claim that you beat anyone.

2.) What everyone else has pointed out.

People who are not ready when its ther turn.
People not repairing ball marks.
People who do not rake bunkers.
Cart path only days... dumb asses who walk all the way to their ball, and then go back and choose a club.
Players who love standing next to the hole or in your line when your putting, or not marking their ball 12" from the cup.
People talking loudly when your on the tee.
People who do not watch their shot finish out and spend 5 minutes looking for the ball afterwards.
People who bring brand new golfers to play during prime times.
People driving golf carts like they are in the Baja 1000.

It gets worse every year. The public has gone to shit with etiquette.
