Sorry, but was tiger ever in contention at age 16?

You have got to be joking. That is WHY it's ridiuculous to call him "the next Tiger Woods".

We have seen a 16 year old play some great golf over three days. He seems quite mature for his age as well as being a nice person. How that relates to him becoming the best player in the history of the game is beyond me. For all we know, he may have peaked. So...talk anbout anything esles regarding his game, but forget the "next Tiger Woods" nonsense.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Only one person really said he would be the next Tiger Woods. Of those other few who did make the cut, they did so barely and were never in contention. It all comes down to tomorrow.

ALL I'm saying is you don't get worse at golf from that age on. He's too young to get worse. Peaked? Yeah, if shooting sub 70 three days in a row is a fluke, then yeah maybe he peaked.

Best 9 holes: 35 (Trilogy at Redmond Ridge, 3163y, Par 35/70, 70.0/131)
Best 18: [b]77[b] (Palm Valley CC, 6545y, 71.4/126)
Notable career achievement: I have NEVER four-putt.

And I am not suggesting that his play is a fluke. He's a fantastic player. You should have seen Jason Day at that age - probably better. Aaron Baddely - probably MUCH better. You don't need to know much about sport to know that prodigious talent at a young age doesn't necessarily translate to commensurate success as an adult. I just can't see the point in making ridiculous predictions at this stage. All we can say is that he has done fantastically well so far in this tournament, is remarkably focused and composed and hopefuly we'll see a lot more of him.

i never said he ''would'' be the next tiger woods, i said ''we MIGHT be looking at the next tiger woods.'' huge difference.

Well you may as well go into a supermarket and gaze into a pram and say the same thing. Both assessments will be equally accurate.

16 year old kid T7 for the championship on saturday. gents, i think we might be looking at the next tiger woods.

Slow your roll, buddy. Tiger had already won 2 or 3 USGA championships by the time he was 16 years old. We never heard of this kid before last week.

The kid is very talented and beyond his years and who knows how he'll do, but the coverage of it acted like he was Woods and just a bit too much.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I would not make a comparison to Tiger on the kid, but for 16 years old he's not only an incredible golfer but incredibly mature as well. How awesome to have your entire HS cheering you on and to play with Pavin on Sunday.

I'd like for him to keep his commiitment to UT and play on the Texas golf team for atleast for three years.

Depends on his family’s financial situation…a white kid from a country club…probably not an issue but who knows. The hypocrisy is universities make millions on these kids but if he takes a hamburger from a booster the NCAA goes beserko. Amateur status is just a convenient gimmick to keep the money in house. Why can a law student intern for money, an accounting major work summers at a PA, an environmental major get paid to clean up the oil spill, a journalism student gofer at a TV station?

Pro sports are multibillion dollar entertainment business’ to claim that “sports” is not a legitimate field of study is ridiculous. Why can’t a kid make some cash working in his chosen field AND get a degree? All of us worked our way thru college,,,if you are playing a D1 sport it’s a 24/7 job…they don’t have time to work in the cafeteria. OK so Justin would have gotten $20K to wear a Nike hat on Sunday instead of a UT hat & John Wall would have gotten $5M to wear a sneaker,,,do the amounts change the fairness? Maybe this belongs in the "Grill Room"

Had he been a pro, he would have made $94,250 for his T16. Another respectable finish and he would be able to pay for college to fall back on. College will always be there...

true, but why pay for college when you can get a free ride?.......and he could always play in some tour events and then eventually turn pro.....it's apples and oranges (as I can see a agrument for both sides)

I was there cheering the kid on. I think he finally let the pressure get to him at the end of the back nine. I was walking with his group. He stayed within himself first, then after making the three birdies, he started acknowledging the growing and boisterous crowd. That's when he started making bad shots.
On a side note, I was rushing to get ahead on either number 11 or 12 to find a spot around the green, when I head "Ball!", and look just in time to see Corey Pavin's ball roll no more than two inches in front of my foot. It was very cool seeing him launch one up out of the fluffly rough over a tall tree about 10 yards away with a nine iron, from 155 yards out.

Your desire to change has to be greater than your desire to stay the same.

Let see. Texas tuition for a 12 credit(full time) student is $4500/semster. Lets be generous and say room and board cost 10k for the year. So to go to Texas that is 19k per year. We will throw in a few more classes in the summer. Lets call it an even 30k to go to Texas for a year. Assume he takes 4 years to graduate. That cost will be about $120,000. If(this is purely hypothetical) he goes pro at 18 and earns his tour card at q-school and finishes 125th on the money list(the last spot to retain a card) for those years same 4 years as going to college he will have made almost $3,000,000. And that is just for 125th on the money list! Plenty of incentive for me to give up a free ride to college! If I get hurt and can't compete after 4 years, I still have $3m and can easily pay $120k for college.

Not to mention, that is just event earnings. He would make a boatload more in endorsements.

Indeed. I would do the same thing. Yeah, endorsements are always more than they money they actually made on tour that year.

If Jason Day was better at age 16, don't you think he would have won a pga tournament then? His injuries set him back, but he definitely stepped up. We will just have to see. Lots of young guns now, it seems like. This decade of golf should be very interesting.

Jason Day is the youngest player to win a PGA TOUR-sponsored event. The point I was making is that the talent that some of these guys have at an early age is just unbelievable. But you can't measure it by tour wins. It's all very well to talk about how talented soneone is, but it this talent doesn't always turn into a string of victories. Golf is littered with the names of phenoms who never lived up to their potential. But I would say that Fowler will be OK and Spieth might be. No-one knows.

Personally, I rank greatness by who finishes the best all year long/career long. So does the official world golf ranking. Although I am not quite sure of their forumula but it certainly has to do with your average finishes and at what events they were at.

The person who is best is the one who wins the FEDex cup, period. In the end, all that matters is your score (as well as whether or not YOU are playing the game or the game is playing you)

    • A couple of things.  Some of the clubs in your bag should be dropped immediately.  A 2-iron for example with what obviously seems to be a lower swing speed or possibly not great swing yet is a definite no-no.  To be hitting that 120-140 yards, which I assume includes run, is a sign that you are not getting the ball airborne at the correct angle to maximise distance.  The reason your 3 and 5 hybrid are going the same distance is that your launch angle is better with the 5.  Loft is your friend. Ideally I would suggest going to a golf or sporting store where you can hit golf balls on a simulator without being disturbed to understand your club carry distances and hopefully swing speed.  With that information we can definitely guide you better.
    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.
    • Day 111 - Worked on my grip and higher hands in the backswing. Full swings with the PRGR.
    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
    • I would think that 3 in a row with the same players might get some behind the scenes examination from the SCGA if they were suspect.  Are there any clubs questioning the results?
