The U.S. is way, way behind on the technology. My father spent the last 7 or 8 years of his career designing smart phones. The stuff you're seeing now is what they were working on years ago. There's rivals made by other companies that far surpass it, but they never release them. I've used phones made 5 years ago that surpass this thing. The thing is, no other company wanted to release a phone with similar features with such a slow and antiquated network (edge was the only network the original iPhone used), so they didn't. It was a bad move. Motorola wrote its own death warrant by not releasing some of the phones it spent millions designing.

not fair.

My wife and I were loyal iPhone owners until last week, when we bailed on AT&T; for Sprint and the HTC Evo 4G. I held off on getting the Evo when it first came out because I knew that the iPhone announcement was coming. Based on what I saw at my Sprint store I thought Jobs was going to have to hit a home run with iPhone 4. Sadly enough, he didn't.

Don't get me wrong. I really liked my old iPhone 3GS in terms of features and ease of use. The problem is you have to put up with AT&T;'s service and coverage, which in my part of the country is very spotty in places. With Sprint I get 3G service in areas where I couldn't with AT&T; and although I know it'll be a while before Sprint or any carrier offers 4G service in Nebraska, the operating system on the Evo is at least the equal of Apple's OS and is even superior in a couple of areas. I've heard that the iPhone may be offered in a CDMA version on Verizon as early as this fall and it won't be a moment too soon for Apple, as it's share of the smartphone OS market dropped from second to third last month and will likely continue to do so considering the rate at which Android phones have been selling.

Won't be upgrading the software on my 3G... it's unlocked and I want to keep it that way. i will buy an unlocked iPhone 4 later this summer from the apple store and enjoy iOS4 on that device

And I also got an e-mail saying it has shipped (overnight delivery!). So I will be getting mine tomorrow! Can't wait... By the way, iOS 4 on iPhone 3G seems to sped up some of the applications and allows folders so I can group programs in a single folder. It does NOT, however, allow home screen background change (not on 3G only on 3GS and iPhone 4).

I have in my posession some prototypes made by NTT Docomo several years ago, but I need to get conformation on exaclty what I can and can't say about them, as I tested them, and had to promise non disclosure.

So the prototype is several "years" old and you still can't disclose info about it? Exaclty how long does it take to develop a phone that is supposedly so superior to American technologies?? Hard for me to believe

one of the main reasons the iPhone is so popular in countries like Korea and Japan, is becuase it's so popular in america... these cultures mindset is entrenched in becoming equal with the west, and having what the west has... therefore if it is popular in America, it must be good, and regardless of how "good" it actually is, many people in those countries will purchase one.

Yeah, okay. Because the rest of the world doesn't think the US is full of crap, right?

Just think of what would happen to AT&T; if iPhone left them. There is a decent chance they would just go down the tube totally.

HAHA!!!! Seriously?? And why were they the top cell company before the IPhone??? Go down the tubes totally....that's hilarious!! I suppose you think Verizon is a bigger company too, huh?

And on that glorious day I will neck six beers and dance on their grave in my soft spikes yelling hallelujah. Pricks.

You had to go to London to get it?

And you believed the advertisement?

As much as you can believe Verizon's. Verizon is the one getting sued for not being truthful in their commercials....not AT&T;

And as far as dropped calls and coverage, blah blah blah....that is ALL region dependant. I can take you all around my area where AT&T; service is far better than Verizon...just like I am sure you can do that in your area. I have traveled all around the South and very rarely have signal issues with AT&T.; So just because you live in South Dakota or something and Verizon has better signal quality, doesn't mean that it is better in South Carolina. The non-detailed layout of these commercials are what distort everyone's views about the different signal qualities and what not. Sure Verizon is the 2nd largest cell phone company behind AT&T...but; what they don't mention is that AT&T; has twice as many customers as Verizon, so they are a distant 2nd

  • 3 weeks later...

OK. So I have been using iPhone 4 for about a couple of weeks now and here is what I found personally.

The processor is definitely a lot faster.
When you are in a strong signal area, everything is okay.
When you are in a weak/medium signal area, the "death grip" effect is definitely noticeable.
AT&T; SUX!!!

Apple came out this week and said the formula that the Iphones use (and have used since day 1) to calculate the signal is wrong. They basically said that it wasn't an AT&T; issue.

As far as the death grip goes, the Apple bumper is supposed to help this issue. Or you can take a rubber wristband and stretch it around the outside of the phone (same as the bumper but cheaper). I actually ordered one on Monday because everyone I have asked have loved them in my area. None of them are having these issues.

If they have a strong signal to begin with they will not have any issue with the death grip. However, it is when you are in a relatively weak signal area that you have problems with the death grip.

As far as Apple's assertion of using the wrong formula to calculate the signal, is may or may not be true. All I know is that my other iPhone (3G) has no problem making calls from my home. but iPhone 4 (yes I have two phones, I am glad I only upgraded one of them) cannot make a call 70% of the time. The signal indicator says "searching..." while iPhone 3G has four bars and can make calls without any problems. I even have a case for iPhone 4 to avoid the death grip issue, but it doesn't solve the problem.

All I know is the death grip problem is real and iPhone 4 is very poorly designed to be used as a phone.

HAHA!!!! Seriously?? And why were they the top cell company before the IPhone??? Go down the tubes totally....that's hilarious!! I suppose you think Verizon is a bigger company too, huh?

Have you read Consumer Report's studies on cell phone coverage? AT&T; is last in customer service and last in cell service in 17 major cities. That's behind Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon. Many many people are only hanging on to AT&T; because of the iPhone.

And no, AT&T; is not the largest cell phone provider, Verizon overtook them last year when they bought Alltel . And the exact study that AT&T; (well, Cingular then) claimed as saying they had the fewest dropped calls denies ever really proving that to be true.

This rumor has been started every year since the Iphone came out. It is a marketing ploy that is used to deter the sells of Driod phones from AT&Ts; side and a ploy to stop the Verizon users from going to AT&T; for the Iphone. No one even knows when AT&Ts; contract with Apple is up and there have also been rumors that the contract wsa extended when the Ipad came out.

If they have a strong signal to begin with they will not have any issue with the death grip. However, it is when you are in a relatively weak signal area that you have problems with the death grip.

That right there should prove it's the phone and not the service. If your 3g works fine at your house and the Iphone 4 does not, then it's the phone.

Have you read Consumer Report's studies on cell phone coverage? AT&T; is last in customer service and last in cell service in 17 major cities. That's behind Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon. Many many people are only hanging on to AT&T; because of the iPhone.

Then why was Verizon being sued for saying they were the largest provider? Come to my area and I can show you how much better AT&T; is than Verizon. That is why I say it is region based.

I can agree with the customer service. I work for AT&T; (not the cell side, but the customer equipment side, so I have nothing to do with cell phones) but every since we (legacy Bellsouth) got bought by AT&T;, the customer service even for us techs is ridiculous....I won't disagree with that at all!! But to say the signal is crap is just not true. All I can vouch for is the southeast, but all of my friends have changed to AT&T; from Verizon because of these issues. If Verizon was that good around here, I would go to them as well so I can have signal in the basement where I work (the company has a contract with Verizon and has antennas in the building). But they just don't compare and having the Iphone is a plus. And just to be clear, I am not saying any of you are wrong in any way....I am just saying that it is different for different areas. As far as I know, Sprint may be the best in Nevada.....
