You just perfectly described most of my playing partners, unfortunately.

And like some other folks, I'm almost kind of roped into playing w/ the guy. He's been a good friend since high school and is relatively new to the game. However, he and others like him need to a bit more of a realist when it comes to their golf games.

What's that quote? Insanity is doing the same thing over and over but expecting different results.

I dunno, most good pure athletes pickup golf and expect to learn it within a year. Or when they hit the ball good they expect to do it all the time and get mad
I went through a spazzy phase through my first year of golf and i've just accepted it that those days are gonna happen now.
One of my buddies flips out all the time and its his first year of golf.... he also claims to shoot 84 on par 72 76 rated courses, which is a complete joke

Which brings me to another quirk............. the "liar".

Guys that you golf with a few times a year and have a pretty good idea of how good they are, but who can't help but tell you how good they've been playing. (Without you around, of course)

"Yeah, you should have been around last week. I shot an 84. The week before that I shot an 85. I don't understand what's happening today." - As they're on pace to shoot a 98 all the while looking bad doing it.

Yeah, I believe you shot that 84 & 85 guy. I also dated Jessica Alba a year ago.

Looks like annoying behavior and partners is pretty well covered. My pet peeve is slow play for whatever reason it occurs. It is OK to take a little extra time with difficult shots, but if your round is taking more than 4 hours it is taking too long.

the guy who hacks up a hole, neglects to finish it, and tells everyone to "just mark me down for a 7". then later he announces that he just broke 90.

hey, i hack up my fair share of holes, but i write down the proper score afterwards.

haha, I know one of those....

and I think I might be the guy who legitimately can shoot a low 80 score by myself and then get with a foursome and shoot horribly. Mainly its because I play with ^^^that guy and he also gets entirely pissed, starts cursing, slingin clubs...it throws me off my game. My pet peeve is the guy who is driving the cart but wants to spend 10 minutes looking for his ball while you forget where yours landed, haha.

My philosophy on golf "We're not doing rocket science, here."

Just played with some random, looked like Payne Stewert. Fixed every divot, read putts for 5 minutes, took the sand out on the fairway to fill in holes in the rough, spend a good 5-10 minutes raking bunkers. Great that he's keeping the course nice, but wow was he annoying.

I'm the most annoying in our Threesome!! I keep winning decisively, so my friends keep inviting a 4th player that I eventually beat as well. I end up shooting better scores those days. But seriously I hate the guy that looks in every lake and hazard for free balls, regardless of people waiting on the tee box!

When I was in high school I remember I played with a guy who always overestimated his ability. We played our matches on a small par 3 course where the longest hole we played was a 250yard par 4. The kid claims he shot a one under the week prior to the match and ends up beating me in match play by about 3 holes. Decent player for a high school team, but not as good as he claims. A few weeks later we get paired up in the county championships at a regulation course. He's an annoyance as usual, boasting about his grips that are supposed to be the best and telling stories that none of the other members of the group care about. Our hero here shoots about 95. Since the cut was 100, we get paired up again in the districts and with three holes to go, with the possibility of facing another 95, he chucks a club against a tree and gets disqualified for his behavior. Most satisfying last three holes of my high school career.

Two types of partner annoy the hell out of me.

The one who decides to tell you on the 15th hole that "you're playing really well, just keep it going and you'll have a great score." Perhaps they think you need a pep talk, but if I'm playing well, I know I'm playing well. I don't need to be told. This has happened three times in the last month and each time it has led to a collapse. I'm not blaming them for my poor performance - that would be dumb - but once the words are spoken it feels like a kiss of death.

The second is the guy who makes comments about your 'interesting swing' when you are beating him. I do this thing with my driver on the take-away and one guy pointed it out (8 skins at stake) and I practically missed the ball on my next tee shot.

Gripe over.

I hate the unwanted caddy... let me play how I wanna play the damn hole.

Yeh it would be funny if someone said to someone like that if you want to be my caddy so bad here you can carry my clubs

I was paired with a guy on the last day of our club championship a few years ago that plumb bobbed off the tee on par threes. He was serious, and never once hit the green.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
